I read the book. The history and authors intentions were in the prologue. When I suggest to people to read the book and show me where it encourages prejudice and how Tom is considered a derogatory figure and not a hero as I came to the conclusion of. I was thinking the same thing. I'm an ESL teacher and I'm always pushing my students to aim for higher level English. Josiah, while in a different position, amazingly overcame the linguistic barriers in front of him and from his quotes it's clear he harnessed the English language in a powerful way. This is the 1st time I've heard the true story of how "Tom" got distorted: Northern travelling dramas portrayed the book accurately (Tom, a noble intelligent hero). Southern (& likely some Northern/border) post-Civil War casts turned the characterizations upside down: Portrayed Tom, etc as with all the 'pickinninny' etc Jim Crow stereotypes. I read a story about a family of eight who escaped together and lived in the village Josiah founded, the youngest son eventually decided to help slaves escape when he grew up! The great thing is all of the sons and daughters became successful even though spending first 20 years or more for most of them in slavery!!
"Uncle Tom's Cabin" is in print worldwide and online. It's very likely availible at online booksellers, no need to advertise they're everywhere. School systems probably don't want the controversey that comes along from parents who (like most of the public) misunderstand the term & story of 'Uncle Tom' and don't want their children reading this book in classes. Strange considering 'Huck Finn' is still taught in schools and might be more problematic than UTC.

Uncle tom's cabin and a whole museum in Dresden, Ontario show this with all sorts of artifacts. It includes the awful whips, chains and leg irons too with several cabins. Well worth a visit. Many descendants still live there and have done quite well.

Over the last dozen years or so I’ve heard the slur “Uncle Tom” I only knew he was a slave, and certainly had no idea he was a real person, and not a fictional character. Recently while watching TikTok videos (their algorithm is actually exceptionally good, and it picks up in the type of content you prefer, I see mostly Christian, wholesome, conservative topics) a content creator shared that he’s regularly being called an Uncle Tom, so I decided to research h more about it here on RUclips. Thank you for putting together a cohesive overview of who Josiah was, I will buy the book to gain a further understanding. I find it incredibly sad that people use Josiah Hanson as an insult, it’s even sadder that they have no idea what he did, the people that use Josiah as an insult have no idea how much character it took for him to live up to his word. The only thing we take with us when we die is our integrity. The pressure he experienced while in Kentucky must have been, in a very small way, similar to what Jesus experienced in the garden. To then see the very people that trusted him sold off must have been unimaginable. We don’t know from this story if they were worse or better off, but we do know that, even if they had fled to Ohio, a free state, they were not safe, they would have been fugitives. The fact that he safely got his family to Canada in 40 days is amazing, and to have gone on assist well over 100 slaves achieve freedom is so humbling. God is so amazing, I’m relieved to learn that Josiah knew that Jesus loved him, and he himself spread the Good News!
Here in Australia I read "Uncle Tom's Cabin" as a teenager, but I was too young at the time, and didn't remember much of it. Right now I am rereading it and, although it is a bit "preachy", I am amazed at the author's ability to delineate characters. As literature alone it is certainly a great book.

The two books mentioned that were written by him caused Philippine independence movements to rise against Spanish rule (the same with how Uncle Tom's Cabin caused the American Civil War).

One of them was Dorothy Baker from Ohio. Harriet Beecher-Stowe was the Great Grandmother of her husband, a baker by trade.

Listen to the book on audio. I have twice. One version is really good. The reader uses different voices so you don't get confused.

The traveling Tom minstrel shows gave the book Tom a bad name. The book Tom is a Christ-like figure who repeatedly ascribes himself to save others. Not enough people read this book anymore.

This is the 1st time I've heard the true story of how "Tom" got distorted: Northern travelling dramas portrayed the book accurately (Tom, a noble intelligent hero). Southern (& likely some Northern/border) post-Civil War casts turned the characterizations upside down: Portrayed Tom, etc as with all the 'pickinninny' etc Jim Crow stereotypes. That's how Tom got distorted upside down by snickering rascists.

Powerful story sad I just found out about this today. Well I see uncle Tom is actually a word of endearment and the white people flipped it down south where I'm from Arkansas. Eventually all things will come to light. If I could add to my response yes black people also down south used this term in the wrong way also.

I read a story about a family of eight who escaped together and lived in the village Josiah founded, the youngest son eventually decided to help slaves escape when he grew up! The great thing is all of the sons and daughters became successful even though spending first 20 years or more for most of them in slavery!!

"Uncle Tom's Cabin" is in print worldwide and online. It's very likely availible at online booksellers, no need to advertise they're everywhere. School systems probably don't want the controversey that comes along from parents who (like most of the public) misunderstand the term & story of 'Uncle Tom' and don't want their children reading this book in classes. Strange considering 'Huck Finn' is still taught in schools and might be more problematic than UTC.

Uncle tom's cabin and a whole museum in Dresden, Ontario show this with all sorts of artifacts. It includes the awful whips, chains and leg irons too with several cabins. Well worth a visit. Many descendants still live there and have done quite well.

Over the last dozen years or so I’ve heard the slur “Uncle Tom” I only knew he was a slave, and certainly had no idea he was a real person, and not a fictional character. Recently while watching TikTok videos (their algorithm is actually exceptionally good, and it picks up in the type of content you prefer, I see mostly Christian, wholesome, conservative topics) a content creator shared that he’s regularly being called an Uncle Tom, so I decided to research h more about it here on RUclips. Thank you for putting together a cohesive overview of who Josiah was, I will buy the book to gain a further understanding. I find it incredibly sad that people use Josiah Hanson as an insult, it’s even sadder that they have no idea what he did, the people that use Josiah as an insult have no idea how much character it took for him to live up to his word. The only thing we take with us when we die is our integrity. The pressure he experienced while in Kentucky must have been, in a very small way, similar to what Jesus experienced in the garden. To then see the very people that trusted him sold off must have been unimaginable. We don’t know from this story if they were worse or better off, but we do know that, even if they had fled to Ohio, a free state, they were not safe, they would have been fugitives. The fact that he safely got his family to Canada in 40 days is amazing, and to have gone on assist well over 100 slaves achieve freedom is so humbling. God is so amazing, I’m relieved to learn that Josiah knew that Jesus loved him, and he himself spread the Good News!

Here in Australia I read "Uncle Tom's Cabin" as a teenager, but I was too young at the time, and didn't remember much of it. Right now I am rereading it and, although it is a bit "preachy", I am amazed at the author's ability to delineate characters. As literature alone it is certainly a great book.
In old age senility she wrote the entire book again word for word but thought it was the first time she wrote it. Friends just went along with her to be nice.

@@5x7m Republicans did not own slaves. The Republican party was founded by abolitionists to oppose slavery. The South seceded from the Union only days after the first Republican president was sworn in, because they knew he would end slavery.
Uncle Tom's Cabin also play a part to Philippines' independence. The Uncle Tom's Cabin serves as an inspiration to Jose Rizal (our national hero) to write Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. The two books mentioned that were written by him caused Philippine independence movements to rise against Spanish rule (the same with how Uncle Tom's Cabin caused the American Civil War).

As a non-American individual who read "Uncle Tom's Cabin" out of curiosity on my pre-teens and loved the emotional narrative of dignity and common humanity, it's absolutely mind-boggling to hear "Uncle Tom" being used in a derrogatory way, for any reason at all.

I'm a 67 year old white American man, a member of the Baha'i Faith for 35 years.
We have 49 individuals in the history of this Faith honored by the title Hand of the Cause of God. One of them was Dorothy Baker from Ohio. Harriet Beecher-Stowe was the Great Grandmother of her husband, a baker by trade.
