  • The present work focuses on the design and development of an industrial-scale Metal Hydride-Hydrogen System (MHHS) that can simultaneously function as a hydrogen storage, purification and compression system. The system operating in multiple stages is packed with 40 kg of alloys in each stage that can store H2 up to 600 g (over 6500 l STP). The primary stage of the system carrying 40 kg of La-Ce-Ni based AB5 alloy absorbed hydrogen from the impure gas sample (up to 20% impurity) at low pressure (10-20 bar) and low temperature (15-25 °C) and delivered pure hydrogen (98.5-99.9%) to the subsequent stage at desorption temperature of 80-90 °C. Meanwhile, the intermediate-stage reactor was maintained at 20 °C or lower. For higher impurity content (up to 90%), hydrogen can be separately purified using a multistage purification system. The intermediate stage of the system carries another variant of La-Ce-Ni-based alloy as a coupling stage between the primary and final stage, which predominantly acts as a storage device at an intermediate pressure (50-70 bar). The final stage of the system employed Ti-Zr-Cr-based AB2 alloy that delivered compressed hydrogen at 300 bar by utilizing low-grade thermal energy available at 60-90 °C. The innovative system is the first of its kind in the country.
