I remember when many returned to an area close to Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles where I lived ( predominantly a Mexican neighborhood with a large Jewish population close by).
In the 1950s we all heard the stories from my father’s Japanese friends who had to leave but later returned. I took my children to see Manzanar( internment camp) and I was fortunate to have a women who was taken there as a child come and speak to my class of middle schoolers. The children were astounded that this occurred. Today there is Little Tokyo close to downtown Los Angeles but it took great effort to try and rebuild their lives. I thought we would never see something like this happen again! 💔

Here is how I think immigration policy should work, specifically for the usual cases around the southern border:
    1) Work visas should be very easy to acquire during the times leading up to the agricultural harvest periods when there is sufficient work to employ them. A potential worker shows up at the border, and within 24 hours they should be recorded in a temporary resident system and should have a temporary visa and even a bus ride to where they can start working.
    2) Visa workers should be paid partially on a regular pay schedule and a significant part of their pay should be held in an account to send them continued payments after they leave the USA. If they fail to exit the country within a reasonable time when their visa expires, they should forfeit the pay held in their account. This disincentivizes overstaying seasonal work visas.
    3) It should be very difficult to overstay a visa or be an undocumented resident. Obtaining employment should be impossible. Obtaining access to social services should be impossible. It should be clear that the better choice is to uphold their side of the agreement when they come in on a temporary work visa.
    4) We should have an agreement with Mexico that any immigrant arriving from their border is allowed to return back from the USA through their border. During the time period between temporary work in the USA, we should work with Mexico to make it easy for them to find temporary residence in Mexico.
    5) Although a work visa should not guarantee a path to citizenship, the person’s record while working in the USA should be taken into consideration. It should also be possible to have time spent working while on a visa count towards social security benefits (rolling the withheld pay from point #2 into the social security fund) if they later obtain citizenship.

You don't want these jobs you say? Well, don't look at me, I'm retired and don't eat in restaurants, eat meat and do my own yard work and can afford to pay the higher food prices which will result from this labor shortage on farms.

Professor Wolff is surely the most cogent of minds on YT and in lecture halls in these uncertain times, sharing his deep and thoughtful intellectual prowess for us, the unwashed masses. HS civics was one taught and not so long ago. I suggest a new curriculum incorporating such salient, relevant material in every high school yesterday. We might even subvert shootings like the Abudant Life one that went down today. The waste and suffering appals and I grieve for victims, families and perhaps most: a Congress that believes guns solve All. Country First!

Another unfortunate part are how willing so many people in this country seem to be to allow Mr Trump to act on rounding up who he considers are illegal immigrants and attempting to use the prison system to detain them until they are deported. 174 Japanese American men from Manzanar internment camp served in the U.S. armed forces during World War II. Among them, PFC Sadao Munemori became the only Japanese American from Manzanar to receive the Medal of Honor. On April 5, 1945, near Seravezza, Italy, Munemori took command after his squad leader was killed. When an enemy grenade landed in his foxhole where he sheltered with two fellow soldiers, he sacrificed his life by throwing himself onto it to save his comrades. His mother Nawa, who was interned at Manzanar, attended a memorial service behind barbed wire fences honoring her son and another fallen Nisei soldier.

Someone pointed out to me a man who was an assistant to our congress representative and suggested I talk to him. I did, and he promised to help, and told me I was lucky to have a Democrat for a president because the dept. of immigration is under the executive branch, and the Republicans have traditionally been against immigration because when immigrants become citizens they tend to vote Democrat.

"the Republicans have traditionally been against immigration because when immigrants become citizens they tend to vote Democrat"
Dinah, you are missing one critical word : "Illegal" and this is the point that continues to be hammered on, but always ignored, because it doesn't "fit" your argument.
Tina, the gal I've been with for 26 years is Hispanic and her grand parents came to America in the 50's to pick apricots in Ojai, California under the "Bracero program".
Both sides of Tina's parents family became millionaires, starting businesses in the Santa Barbara area over 4 decades.
They are most assuredly for immigration, but ILLEGAL immigration is something they find abhorrent...
Surprisingly, they are divided in how they vote; one side votes Democrat, the other Republican.
The important thing they ALL subscribe to is "The Rule of Law"
Something Joe Biden swore to uphold in his oath of office... until he pardoned Hunter.
It's a political mess Dinah, but getting your facts straight is key to solving the problem.

I happen to be visiting one of the countries that many of the immigrants are coming from looking for a better way of life, entering through he Souther border. One problem I see is great confusion on how they may be greeted upon arrival. One thought is that they will be welcome with open arms and given large stipends upon arrival. Another thought is that now is not the time to come as they may not make it across the border and if they do they might only be deported in short order. Quite a bit of confusion with respect to our current policies? What is our current policy?

Yes, America is broken. The majority of American voters got what they wanted on election day.
I do not know what they wanted, but I'm pretty sure America will remain broken. That's because the majority of voters were not very concerned about white supremacy, global warming, women's rights, LGBTQ rights, access to affordable healthcare, increased taxes on the middle class, pre-existing medical conditions, prescription drug prices, Social Security survival, Medicare survival, Medicaid survival, voting rights survival, union survival, accountability of government officials to the rule of law, free and fair elections, livable wages, affordable housing, access to affordable child care, small business startup costs, helping the homeless, fascism, Russian interference in elections, Russian invasions of other countries, the potential end of NATO, privatization of public education, a one-party fascist government run by white supremacists, grifters, criminals, and corrupt officials, (businessmen much like those who run United Healthcare.) Whatever it was voters wanted, it must have been mighty compelling for them to vote the way they did.

  • @ВячеславКозаченко-д5б

Hello Mr. Wolf. Do you understand the important topics - why Ukraine is losing in the confrontation with Russia... Who is President Zelensky and who came to political power with this man? Zelensky is an actor and a man from show business. Who supports President Zelensky - mayor of the city of Kyiv, leader of the "UDAR" party Vitaliy Klitschko, world champion in professional boxing, and the "Servant of the People" parties of Zelensky and UDAR Klitschko are 90-100% composed of the same people as themselves, except for the leadership parties, representatives of commercial banks for whom political parties are a commercial project, the heads of which are the leadership of the National Bank of Ukraine. In essence, the political parties of Ukraine belong to the oligarchic structure of Ukraine, which lives off loans from international organizations in the USA and Europe, they hang this money as a debt on the state and steal it, rolling it back to Europe, the USA and so on to do business there. Who is Russian President Vladimir Putin? Colonel of the Federal State Security Service, who, having come to power, reformed the political power of Russia, removed the oligarchs from political power and proposed long-term development to Russian society, which is called Russia 2035. According to the plan of the Russian government, the Russian Federation must restore its potential before this time. Putin gathered the best scientists from various branches of industry, economics and brought them to power, in the government of the Russian Federation there are no people lower than a candidate of doctor of sciences, just like in the republic China. In Ukraine, young people came to power, stupid and daring at heart... they are all chasing the opportunity to become rich people. When negotiations took place in Minsk, if these people had the proper education, they would not have allowed the war in Ukraine. The whole war is happening in Ukraine for the sake of assistance in the form of funding from the United States, loans, and so on...on which the political pinnacle of power in Ukraine, all ministries and government departments, profit from it, especially the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

The way immigrants are being dealt with is most certainly not an equivalent- it's ten times worse. Note that the right wing defeated their own supposed plan to try and deal with immigration in Congress because they wouldn't get political credit. Or was it because they don't want to change things? Deportation won't change things is the professor's message here. And the racism goes right along with it.

Right that's why I only ever hear about the Haitians migrants, who are here legally, or the venezuelan migrants. Like I'm sorry at this point you can only convince the dumbest person you're worried about people here illegally from Canada or Europe.

I disagree with you based on the way you compared and articulated. First of all, I am not against legal immigrants because my parents were legal immigrants themselves. Are you advocating that the government should leave these people without proper identification alone in the U.S.? It seems that way. (1) no country in the world is ever tolerated illegal immigration and illegal entry (2) undocumented people that currently identified and in US’s custody are not just violating immigration law but also violated other state and federal laws (3) US has been deporting high degree criminals with issued green cards but without citizenship. (4) Estimate over 10 million undocumented immigrants or workers in the US , clearly US does not have the resources to house 10 million people because not everyone is accounted for. Obviously, only undocumented criminals or unlucky one is being detained from suspicion of crime related (5) is it mass deportations of few thousand people and/or criminals ? Is this propaganda? (6) only the companies, restaurants, farmers etc, are benefits from cheap labors while the rest of taxpayers have to pay for the cost of health, security, and social benefits to these people. (7) in a way, these undocumented people are victims from Americans that might have have committed crimes against them, but they afraid to report to law enforcement due to fear of deportation, (8) US constitution requires a warrant to search a suspicious home. US doesn’t have the resources to go house to house searching for someone might be hiding an undocumented person especially then we have to care, house, and feed them. Only the unlucky one might have come across law enforcements that are in custody. Law enforcements also don’t go around check anyone document especially they are not allowed without a suspicion of a crime.

Hi, I understand and respect your views. Immigrants in the early USA is different today than it is in the past. People were struggling to eat (Irish). There was no welfare state. Free enterprise was real and available to all. Today free enterprise is limited...try start a real business... even 85% of new restaurants fail. Now try build a new car manufacturing company. Gobalism causes political grief. Humans will soon be redundant thanks to AI.This causes tremendous friction between all people trying to keep jobs and get ahead. People have become selfish, greedy and entitled. This causes immigration to become a political problem and must be controlled. You we soon see the results of different ethnicities vying for limited resources. Life is about to get real. One of the reasons Rome died was from within due to immigration. Please note the similarities of greed and ethics, religion and ethnicity. The government lost control and the military became useless.

Immigration has very little to do with tax structure, job availability and how government spends money. If you think for a moment that massive deportation will alleviate the marketing of fear by right wing billionaires or pour money into the country, ask the Ukraine, Israel, Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq where all those bombs come from. The law is dead in this country. So is the ability to reason, especially about a headcount of illegals. Nobody knows the real number. The people that estimate the numbers professionally will tell you the propagandists dramatically overestimate the count. Not that it isn't a problem, but there is no effort to deal with it effectively by those in charge and those just elected did nothing the last time in office. There's no indication they'll do any different this time. Even 20 million, a ridiculously high propagandized number, is only 6% of the population. It's more like 3% at worst. A problem? Yes. Deportation a cure? Nope.

the dishonesty started in the title of the video: no-one is deporting immigrants. Only ILLEGAL immigrants. And the lies continued throughout the video where this distinction was not made.

    • @dmike3507
      @dmike3507 21 день назад

Wrong. People legally seeking asylum have been deported in large numbers under Obama, Trump, & Biden. Also Trump has expressed desire to deport legal immigrants (like Haitians in Springfield, OH) who already have citizenship.
Also there's a simple way to solve "ILLEGAL" immigration: just make it LEGAL! Undocumented immigration was not illegal for the vast majority of immigrants until the quota system of 1965. Learn your history. The Founding Fathers were undocumented immigrants who refused to assimilate, so were all the original colonists, and so were most of your ancestors. If Europeans were allowed to do it, anyone should be allowed to. The immigrants did not change, the laws did.

The point is there is poor effort to deal with immigration and there's intense focus on race when there is. Fear works as a distraction and has created a paranoid reality. Especially in certain people that see lies everywhere. Know what I mean?
