Thanks for explaining this project so thoroughly. I'm an patient in a nursing home who is starting to make homemade musical instruments out of recyclables with my occupational therapist as part of my therapies and will be keeping some of my instruments I mske and giving others to other patients so they can have some musical fun. These drums are probably going to be the second project I take on, thank you in advance for what will hopefully be a lot of fun.
Your method seems to be very easy. I'm a pre-school teacher, teacher in a project-based school. Shall try out this method with my 2 to 3 year olds for their coming exhibition on this May.
You would be surprised how hard you can hit this without it breaking. It's certainly not as durable as real drum skins, but mainly because over time it stretches rather than breaks. I use drumsticks made out of 12mm dowel (1/2 inch) and I can hit it just as hard as I hit my drums with Remo skins without it breaking. I don't demonstrate that in the video only because it would have caused the audio track to clip and distort really unpleasantly.
would it last longer if you run a piece of tape all they way around the drum over the ends of the tape you criss crossed , or does it just break on the top ?
Well, If the drum is open at the bottom it will be more resonant and louder, with a longer sustain. It will still work if you don't cut the bottom out, but it definitely sounds better if it's open. Alternatively, if you've got a hole-saw you can cut a large-ish hole in the side of the drum - say 1 to 2 inches in diameter. That will help, because what you are trying to do is stop the air that is trapped inside a closed drum from acting like a spring that damps the skin's vibrations.
Depends on the drum shell and the size of the drum - but yes, they can be very loud. Not as loud as a real drum, but much louder than your average toy kid's drum.
i dont know a lot about drums, but what makes the drum the key? like the snare is a higher one. the bass is lower. is it the diameter or the length of the sides of the bucket?
This is very helpful because I am making an instrument for Music Class and I have no idea what to make because I can't go to the store yet and I am really impatient. Thanks! :]
I started a band with 5 people today. The names of the people I started the band was Max(me),Madilyn,Audrey,Breighton,Brooklyn. Madilyn and Audrey left the birthday party. So we weren't able to fake record music
@JerryTheSpartan a drum will have a lower pitch if it is larger in diameter, and/or the drum skin is more massive (heavier per unit area), and/or the skin is under lower tension. A small drum with a light, tight skin has a higher pitch than a large drum with a heavy, loose skin. A longer drum shell with a large volume affects the perceived tone (more bassy), but not the actual pitch. A snare makes the drum brighter in tone, but the pitch is unchanged. Hope this helps :)
Not really an issue - it's so quick and cheap to put a new skin on. Many "real" drums can't be tuned - most frame drums like like Irish bodhrans have no tuning mechanism (some modern bodhrans do, but traditionally if you wanted to tune one you stood it in front of a fire or heater - that temporarily raised the pitch of the drum). Won't work with this design - it would lower the pitch, since plastic gets softer and stretchier with heat. Worst case - plastic burns! Black smoke, toxins ...
Ever heard of "clubs" or a normal pair of drum sticks with the tips sawed off and then you flip them over? I also continually do a rim shot in the exact spot when I play, so after 45 minutes has lapsed, there will be an indent almost exactly at the center of the black dot. If you're still following, I'll let you do the rest of the math (e.g.; "beating the shit out of my drum set" would probably be irrelevant at this juncture).
Saran Wrap is way too think and easy to rip, like a plastic baggie, when you press in it, the material will stretch and leave a dent, so packaging tape is hard, yet flexible. Perfect for this project.
5:57 "The skin will last a week or two before it needs to be replaced" Does this mean the drum will only last a week or two? Surely it would last longer than that?

Hey.. Graps thanks for help this tutorial is very helpfulm.✔
Hai it is nice to make and it is easy to make thank you so much
How did you make the drum
Let's see, the video above shows a step-by-step tutorial on how he made the drums so I'm afraid you have to look somewhere else to find your answer.
Does it work with duct tape?

can i paint it?
Yes you can 🥰🥰
the sound is good!!
Do we have to use transparent tape?
no

Possibly - try it and see. If it works, great! If not, find something cylindrical :)
What is that is wood
i'll make it for me !
The "skin" was the last trick i didn't know how to get. Now i know. thx
U a painter?
Great idea man you could use more tape and make it more resistent and olso the can or the bail can be bigger and deeper to change the sound :-)
Yeah! It'll make a cool drum set if you put them in some kid of homemade stand!!!!,
why you don't use polothine
Please teach me how to make a drum kit
Amazing!I will try to do some of those instruments.
Are they loud?
The real question is... Why do you need that much mayo? Lol
