Pretty Women by Alan Rickman and Johnny Depp from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. I do not own anything. All rights go to their respectful owners.
Judge Turpin: Mr Todd our new celibrity Clearly, fame isn't everything, is it, Mr. Todd Sweeney Todd: There's a hole in the world like a great black pit and it's filled with people who are filled with shit and the vermin of the world inhabit it. Judge Turpin: You'll kill me, boy? Well here I stand! Sweeney Todd: How about a shave? Come and visit you good friend, Sweeney! You sir! Too, sir. Welcome to the grave I will have vengeance. I will have salvation
I never thought Alan Rickman could sing: he has the voice of someone who reads 19th century books aloud in public. And he should. Depp was made for singing songs like this! Him and Rickman could've made billions if they did duets like this more often.
@@connorclark8100 as someone who grew up with the stage musical, I honestly love Johnny Depp as Sweeny Todd. While Len carou was a bit more relatable and human, Depp's version just has this on edge, completely done with everyones shit vibe that I love. Obviously this is about preference, but in my opinion his voi e and character acting fits very well with Mr Todd, but to each their own I guess
@@idk_whatimdoing_1384 I have no issue with the man's performance, I just think his singing tone is too tenor, for a role designed for men with much lower voices
Especially impressive when you realize that this film was the first time that had Johnny Deep and Alan Rickman (along with Helena Bonham Carter) had to sing for their roles.
There is only one thing that truly angers me more than anything else about Turpin, and that's the fact that he thinks his lust is love. Lust is far different from love and he sent a very innocent man to prison because of it...
Taylor Sampson That also shows him as a victim to himself then. We can't just blame him for not understanding something. I don't support what he has done, but it gives us a look at him as I have seen at Frollo from Hunchback of Norte Dame.
That's why one of the main underlying themes of the work is human nature and the confusion of love and lust, good and evil, and many other concepts that people have tried to make sense of and cultivate and the lack of attainment of such ideal standards due to out side forces and oppressive people who have failed themselves, a cycle of negativity, brought on by such a force, causes those who "Naïve"ly aspire to such standards to totally give up on people as a whole,. THUS Sweeny Todd
I remember watching the movie and the expectation leading up to the moment when Turpin nearly gets his weazand slit, at Todd's last word' Yes ' ... you are at the edge of the couch waiting and suddenly that idiot of a sailor comes bursting in screeching "You have got to help me Mr.Todd.' The frustrated Todd nearly kills the sailor at that moment because his long anticipated revenge has come to naught because of a lovesick loon. .Well, if I could feel equally murderous, well that's pretty expert direction!
Snape and Grindelwald sing a duet just before being interrupted by Grindelwald's younger self and then older Grindelwald has to be calmed by Bellatrix Lestrange as Snape runs back to Peter Pettigrew and... JESUS CHRIST, WHO WAS IN THIS THAT WASN'T ALSO IN THE WIZARDING WORLD!?!?
At 2:19, it's actually "Make haste and if we wed, you'll be commended sir". A lot of the lyrics online seem to be wrong about this. This is why the next line asks "and who may it be said is your intended sir". Otherwise that question makes no sense.
"Make haste and in this work you'll be commended, sir" "My lord..." "And who may it be said is your intended, sir" "My ward..." Lyrical genius right there 🤯
*Spoilers* Without the Judge and Mrs.Lovett’s lustrous desires for Lucy and Todd, the whole story would not have been that tragic in the end. I mean, Todd would not have been deprived of his family and if he had, Lovett would have told him that his wife was alive, and maybe everything would have changed. I find it interesting that they sing again this song about pretty women, right after Todd killed his wife, whose beauty was killed by trauma because of the Judge’s rape. In the end, Todd recognizes his wife BY THE FIRE (that passionate fire and love that both drove him insane), which is in contradiction with the SEA Lovett mentioned in her fantasies. Having recognized his wife after the murder and felt incredibly lost, he thus truly loved her to the point of not wanting to live after what he has done. The Judge, on the other hand, has completely lost interest when it came to Lucy after his crime.
I find it so typical of people who listen to RUclips music that few, if any, recognize the true genius behind the music... ladies and gentleman: Stephen Sondheim. Without him none of this would be possible. His contribution to American music is astounding in its breadth and depth.
Am i only one that thinks the judge is singing more towards superficial stuff and rushing, while todd is more about how they are inside and how you feel about having them around and singing calmly?
The harmonies are so fascinatingly beautiful, the voicings of all the chords are just utterly genius. How the orchestra interacts with the melody/duet is just perfect, and Sondheim is one of my favorite melodists.

Is it just me or does Johnny Depp sound exceptionally lovely in this song
Probably the best in the film
Because his voice is mixing with Alan Rickmen
He sounds so sweet
He always sounds exceptionally lovely! :D
Especially impressive when you realize that this film was the first time that had Johnny Deep and Alan Rickman (along with Helena Bonham Carter) had to sing for their roles.
i love how todd is just mocking turpin this entire song amd he has no idea
I think they were both honestly singing their feelings here, except Todd wasn't quite as happy happy merry as he seemed.
He is?
@@Mant111 I mean, he was happy happy merry, but not because of the pretty women
Yes he was mocking Turpin and it was a failed assassination attempt. Nevertheless gorgeous song and eventually Sweetney got his revenge.
The sweet melodic tone makes this scene so much more twisted.
Judge Turpin: "Mr. Todd...our newest celebrity."
Sweeney Todd: "What?"
Judge Turpin: "What?"

What I love about this song is that if you listen to it without context, you wouldn't know it was a villain song. It's unique in that way.
Nothing like singing a beautiful piece of music together and being blindsided by your duet partner with a straight edged razor!
Oh God, I love Depps voice 🙈😍

Jack Sparrow and severus snape.. never thought the day would come when they would sing together
