What I don't understand is that if she went through cruel bullying herself in her younger years, why did she do the same thing to others who were young, hopeful and positive, especially if she was given the fortune and opportunity to help others? I guess morality and ethics are key here.
It could be either she's being petty, that she had to go trough with it which means others have to suffer like she did, or the fact that bc she knows how the industry is like she's trying to "prepare" them for "the real world of modeling!" Which could be both, but I doubt that she took them very seriously at all, and just wanted an entertaining show, even if it were on the expense of others.
In many cases the abused becomes the abuser and further perpetuates the cycle.. (doesn’t make it OK at all, but psychologically there is an explanation) .. in THIS case however I just don’t understand it. I was relentlessly emotionally/physically bullied for everything from my looks to my interests and even for no reason at all, from elementary school to high school. and I DO have a lot of long-term issues stemming from that trauma.. but never in a million years could I imagine myself treating others how I was treated TENFOLD .. on LIVE television! Tyra is an actual demon.

I recognized her immediately and talked to her, she was very sweet and humble and I was like I felt so bad for you in that scene.. she said it was really awful.. I think she went pretty far too like down to the bottom 6 .. kudos to you Michelle you still beautiful!!
I used to watch the show when I was 19. Now that I'm 40 and realize that Tyra is only hurting herself in the long run. And if she were smart she would "apologize" but I don't think she'd be forgiven. I used to love Tyra but now I don't and for her to get away with murder for so long is beyond me. But her days are numbered because those girls didn't deserve to be treated that way. When you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem and Tyra is that person who is guilty by association and part of the problem.
Like Janice got room to talk. I'm pretty sure her name ALWAYS shows up on the lists of "Plastic Surgery GONE WRONG". The before pic is beautiful, the after pic looks like the Doctor did a hack job. Karma definitely got her revenge.
I like how they bullied one girl for her gap in her teeth yet they literally put a gap in some other girls' teeth. where is the logic? they just made things up as they went
What was done to Lisa D’Amato, Jael Strauss, Angelea Preston, Jeana Turner, and so many more was so unacceptable and cruel, thank you for speaking on this ❤️
Her comment about the gap teeth didn't age well... wasn't there a Maybelline or cover girl in the last few years with a gap in her teeth? She's so pretty!!
I was I think 10 and I remember Danielle being told her gap was ugly, then looking in the mirror at my big gap and thinking I was ugly...until Danielle said "Why not?" to Tyra's face. I know she went through with partially closing it, but Danielle's attitude about her teeth made me feel better about mine.
Also didn't Jay Manuel also write a "fictional" book about a model completion trying to profit of the trauma these models faced on the show because of him, Tyra, and the whole team? I'm ashamed I ever watched this show smh
Tyra would always get rid of the girls that were really beautiful, you can tell Tyra was jealous of them .I don't see how she ever became a model......
I used to love this show as a young girl and was so naive. Didn't even see the evil or see how messed up it all was. Watching this now, I'm just so floored.
Gaps are becoming more and more popular. I have one and have been made fun of my whole life, so imagine how disgusted I was as an adult watching Tyra and Jay say that...adult bullies.
@icyy2k What are you talking about? Times change. Gaps don't, so people will always have them. And if the future consists of people shunning others that have gaps, I would have to say the younger generations failed. Oh, wait.

Wasn't Tyrant's-I mean- Tyra's tantrum caused by the fact that Tiffany was smiling and laughing with some of the other contestants after she was eliminated? She wasn't crying and walking out with her head bowed in shame, so Tyra humiliated her. 🤬
I remember so many of these episodes and I used to feel so bad for the girls. They were put through hell and I remember feeling like alot of their experiences were traumatic.
Considering the things Tyra claimed was said to her when she sad first trying to get into modeling (too dark, lips too big, butt poking out too much because of her shape, etc) you would think she would've had more compassion when dealing with the girls
What's crazy is what I noticed that most models have something that stands out which is their signature look. And if you're skinny and really tall plus what you think is a flaw is turned into a signature look that fashion designers love. The space in between the teeth or a mole is something like that.
On the topic of the traumatizing make overs, besides microaggressions and not having stylists who knew what they were doing, they also gave some girls such radical styles in the name of "transforming their look" but didn't give the girls any help with the care and upkeep some of the styles required.
I think posing in or around graves for a picture is cringe. Especially in a graveyard, like have respect for the dead and have respect for the gift of life.

I feel kind of ashamed about how much I loved this show back in the day. I only watched maybe 5 seasons, but I ate it up. I know there were a lot of times I felt uncomfortable with what I was watching, but I still couldn't look away. What they put those girls through was AWFUL.
I feel like Tyra had this mentality of “if I had to suffer through it so do you” or maybe she was trying to prove to others how “hard” it was to be a model as a way to validate her status in Hollywood
My mother was a beautician for 40 years and I've learned a _lot_ from her. Based on the valuable lessons I've learned let me just say this: That thing about your hair always growing back is a _lie!_ Yes, your hair will continue to grow, but if you have especially long hair and cut it off on the premise that it will grow back eventually you are fooling yourself. As you grow older, your hair grows more fragile and its breakoff point gets shorter and shorter. My mother tried to warn me of this when I was a senior in high school and decided on a whim to cut off my waist-length hair to an asymmetrical style. (One side to the middle of my ear, the other side to my chin. Hey, it was the 80s, don't judge me.) I told her it would eventually grow back, and she rolled her eyes and begged me to rethink it, but I wouldn't. I don't know if it was because it was her job and she was so beautiful or if it was just because I grew up in a decade where big, long hair was such a _must have,_ but I very much associated a woman's hair with her looks. While my hair was short, I felt _ugly_ and the number of people who openly said they hated it didn't help. I waited anxiously for my hair to grow back.... .....and it never did. At least, not to the original length. Nowhere near it. It used to come to my waist, just grazing my belt. Now-at its longest-it barely grazes my bra. I haven't had a major haircut in 30 years, but it never grew back. So, ladies, think long and hard before you chop off that hair you've been growing so carefully all your life. Yes, it'll grow, but it might never _all grow back._
@@borislavamladenova4268 Yup, I'm not saying don't ever do it, because some short styles are lovely, but please be certain that it's something you really want and that you'll be ok if it never reaches its original length. If I had it to do over, I'd have never cut it.
Same story with my cousin. Her hair only grows to her shoulders now. She has it to her waist as well after she cut it, it never grew to the same length ever again.
This is interesting, I buzzed (shaved my entire head) after having long hair for years, and now my hair is longer and healthier than ever, far past my bra line almost to my belly button!
Maybe we got a jlo situation where she felt so threatened by other Latinas becoming to big where they would outshine her and Tyra might have been like that to some degree
Jay Manuel is no different from all the people who got the clot shot, now regret it because of all of the health issues they're having but claim they "had to" because their job "made them". This isn't a dictatorship. No one forced him (or them) to do these things, they just didn't want to make any type of sacrifice by saying "no". People who stand by their morals & ethics don't back down even if it means they lose out on something they really want.

You’re gorgeous. 😮❤❤❤ The industry is disgusting. I’m sorry you went through that.
@@mermaiddiyartist8119 🤗 you're so kind thank you
I’m a curvy pear/coke bottle Latina I thought I was fat growing up because I am shaped like miss incredible instead of Paris Hilton. On my journey to become a muscle mommy, I recovered from ANA never doing that sh!t again 😂❤
@@AliaAirGuidance777 it’s a huge privilege but also the truth is I encountered ritualistic ab*se & tr*ffking when I was just a teenager and I am still in court (my entire adult life) because of one tr*ffker who ironically lived and worked with a lot of celebrities covered on this channel. I say that to state people think beauty and access is a privilege but when you’re beautiful, intelligent and have a talent like music then industry people try everything they can to own or suppress you. I was sought after and tracked down. They knew my talents before I did and they knew my beauty before I did so I was a target without knowing. Now I am older and have more autonomy I get to showcase my talents how I want but my privilege never guaranteed me that safety, autonomy or power until I reclaimed my dignity and learned life doesn’t have to be viol*nt
"Her friend just passed".
Jay: "ooh my gosh". 😐
Yeah. He was so shocked. Someone give him an Oscar, best actor alive.
Yeah there's no way that was a coincidence as a photoshoot.
@@Ackermoon13I don’t believe Tyra had any genuine intentions of “preparing them for the real world of modeling” … I personally believe she was riding a sadistic power trip that only worsened with every new season
IMO it’s all about the $$ … she was finally part of the ‘in crowd’ she wasn’t going to ruin her chance
So there was a girl named Michelle that was on cycle 4 and I felt so bad for her the whole time, she was the one that had the sores in her head and on her face when they were bleaching her hair to an extreme blonde!! She was literally bawling in pain! Well imagine My surprise when I saw her waitress at a golden corral near My home in Virginia.. I recognized her immediately and talked to her, she was very sweet and humble and I was like I felt so bad for you in that scene.. she said it was really awful.. I think she went pretty far too like down to the bottom 6 .. kudos to you Michelle you still beautiful!!
I audibly cackled while eating dinner when you roasted Janice Dickinson when you said “girl, Janice, you’re barely holding it together on stage” 😭😭😭❤️
Tyra Banks is the type of person who is still stuck in her "High School" mentality until adulthood
Tyra was born in 1973 she's a 51 year old who's never grown up 😂pathetic..
Sadly 14 year old me was obsessed. And with that being said felt UGLY … and fat..
this was my show too!! every wednesday night 😩
Same to obsessed and self hate. The trauma to my self image that show gave me continues to this day
Like Janice got room to talk. I'm pretty sure her name ALWAYS shows up on the lists of "Plastic Surgery GONE WRONG". The before pic is beautiful, the after pic looks like the Doctor did a hack job. Karma definitely got her revenge.
It sure did loll😉😊
I like how they bullied one girl for her gap in her teeth yet they literally put a gap in some other girls' teeth. where is the logic? they just made things up as they went
Half these challenges look inspired by Fear Factor
Exactly!
There’s just no way this women Tyra deserves to get past the cancel culture unscathed, this women was ruthless
12:13 I wish they would have done the same with a picture of Janice before and after her surgeries. Nasty behavior.
The crazy thing is, the pictures don't look that different of the girl
And Tyra had the nerve to drag THE Naomi Campbell up on her triflin' ass show and criticize her for being a bully. She is truly a mess.
What was done to Lisa D’Amato, Jael Strauss, Angelea Preston, Jeana Turner, and so many more was so unacceptable and cruel, thank you for speaking on this ❤️
Tyra is so cringe
She is an abuser.
What about Kate Moss or Vanessa Paradis? they were famous for their gaps.
Lauren Hutton?
Though not a model, Madonna is also known for her gap.
Mick Jagger's daughter, Georgia Jagger a.k.a "Get The London Look!" Girl
I think their whiteness helped them.
@@Dean_Winchester__I don’t think so
Tyra is the reason Beyonce doesn't do interviews and talk shows any more
😂😂😂
Wait why??
Her comment about the gap teeth didn't age well... wasn't there a Maybelline or cover girl in the last few years with a gap in her teeth? She's so pretty!!
Yeah, there was another model on ANTM that had a gap and it was embraced, accepted. Like wtf.
Iirc, that's been kinda the look of Rimmel for a long ass time.
Yes from get the London look
@@KhadijahsMamma yes! Now that you say that I can picture it perfectly!!
Yes, it’s Georgia May Jagger, she’s stunning
I was I think 10 and I remember Danielle being told her gap was ugly, then looking in the mirror at my big gap and thinking I was ugly...until Danielle said "Why not?" to Tyra's face. I know she went through with partially closing it, but Danielle's attitude about her teeth made me feel better about mine.
So glad we're talking about this show! It was super TOXIC!
Yeah I noticed it too
Naomi apparently gave her the same treatment lol. I'm thinking being in the modeling industry turned her into a 🦎
I used to love this show as a young girl and was so naive. Didn't even see the evil or see how messed up it all was. Watching this now, I'm just so floored.
Gaps are becoming more and more popular. I have one and have been made fun of my whole life, so imagine how disgusted I was as an adult watching Tyra and Jay say that...adult bullies.
Amen, girl. ❤
Gaps were fine 30 years ago too.
Can we please make women’s body not a fashion trend?
Times change.
In 10 years it might be a thing of the past again.
@icyy2k What are you talking about? Times change. Gaps don't, so people will always have them. And if the future consists of people shunning others that have gaps, I would have to say the younger generations failed. Oh, wait.
Tyra needed to be cancelled years ago. She can stay gone
They all were such beautiful models that did not deserve the treatment they got. It's sickening we grew up with this on TV.
As a teenager girl, I owned EVERY Clean and Clear product, and I would wash and treat my face while watching this show. I cannot imagine what other girls were doing or thinking while it aired.
@@bellemyjade686it’s crazy how many people developed insecurities from this show!??
I'm convinced that Tyra created this whole mess so she could get away with being a sadist.
I am german. We have Heidi Klum's show Germany's next topmodel and I see many similarities 😢 it's so sad to see that now looking back how young I was, when I watched both shows and thought this was normal.. ☹️
Interesting. I’ve wondered if Germany’s was as bad as America’s. Sad to hear that it was. I always thought Heidi seemed a lot nicer and less full of herself than Tyra.
It really is scary watching it back through a different lens.
@@siameseninja24 unfortunately they are very similar :( in the show they also try to picture Heidi as "friend" of the girls and very close, but they barely see her. but that's just one example
Wasn't Tyrant's-I mean- Tyra's tantrum caused by the fact that Tiffany was smiling and laughing with some of the other contestants after she was eliminated? She wasn't crying and walking out with her head bowed in shame, so Tyra humiliated her. 🤬
I have horrible TV/movie memory but one thing I will never forget is that time Tyra made that poor girl get her head shaved. Tragic.
I’ll never forget when she had the models in a freezing cold pool and how all of them were getting sick smh that episode always pissed me off so bad!
I worked on the series African Safari as the Art director. The production and Tyra was the most horrible people I ever dealt with.
Oh do tell us more
How was she ?
I remember so many of these episodes and I used to feel so bad for the girls. They were put through hell and I remember feeling like alot of their experiences were traumatic.
Yes @Sloan can you do a show about her talk show too? Great work🔥
Anyone else feel like Tyra hates her skin tone sad but it seems that way how she's always belittles people with darker skin tones...
DEFINITELY
She screams self-hatred.
Yeah she definitely has self-hate issues and she seems to bully the girls who have darker skin tones Colorism!
Considering the things Tyra claimed was said to her when she sad first trying to get into modeling (too dark, lips too big, butt poking out too much because of her shape, etc) you would think she would've had more compassion when dealing with the girls
I think she has the logic “I suffered so YOU gonna suffer too”
They always pushed these women to be vulnerable and then would turn around and tear into them for that very same vulnerability. It was heinous.
Janice wanted to always talk about the girls, but she looks a mess her own self. I hated her on the show
What's crazy is what I noticed that most models have something that stands out which is their signature look. And if you're skinny and really tall plus what you think is a flaw is turned into a signature look that fashion designers love. The space in between the teeth or a mole is something like that.
"imperfections" make people extra beautiful!!!
I love Tyra Banks claims how horribly bullied she was by Naomi Campbell but Tyra made a living off of traumatizing and bullying other models.
20 years down the road, there will be the same analysis on rupaul's drag race. he's been exploiting the queens a lot lately, especially with the insane contracts
I have never, ever cared for Tyra Banks. Never.
Same
I will 10000000% turn away a job if i have to kiss someone i dont want to or do anything im not comfortable with
I think it's fair to say times have changed since the early 2000s-2010s. What was passable for television then would cause uproar today
So Tyra was crying wolf about being Bullied by Naomi Campbell in her early days and she in turn did the same to other young aspiring models
Disgusting !!!!!!
The show Unreal depicted how these reality shows cruelly manipulate the contestants. Once I saw that, I really couldn’t watch reality TV anymore. There’s nothing real about it. This is an excellent expose, Sloan, and clearly illustrates just how cruel these shows can be.
Please do a video about the Tyra show. I watched it whenever I was at home sick, along with ANTM as a kid. So I'm totally interested.
The way they treated Rachel is season 13 was terrible. Eliminated off camera for not being media trained on a second episode. She ended up being on multiple music videos!.
I'm glad that was one of the many reality shows I never wanted to watch
Tyra was acting like a snob. So rude when she was talking about that girl's Gap. I have a gap so the comment Tyra made, kind of hurt my feelings a little. But I think nowadays people don't find it as ugly.
My cousin loved that show. My cousin was also anorexic and almost died from it. She was put into a mental institution for it, and hospitalized 3 times. But man, this was her favorite show.😢
I’m so glad she survived. I hope she’s doing okay now. I have been struggling with an ED for 12 years now and this was my favorite show throughout my preteen and teenage years 💔
I watched this show when it on tv. I didn’t watch the later seasons. I don’t think of this show the same way anymore
Same.
It's Always been weird to me to paint Naomi to be the villain, they were definitely pinned against each other but Tyra is no angel
35:00 when my mother yells at me it is because she is abusing me.
25:29 Having had sew ins before in my life, I couldn’t IMAGINE getting it taken out IMMEDIATELY after it was done. Any braided style being taken out the same day is INSANE. And Jael didn’t even have highly textured hair so I know it was worse. RIP Jael ❤
I feel kind of ashamed about how much I loved this show back in the day. I only watched maybe 5 seasons, but I ate it up. I know there were a lot of times I felt uncomfortable with what I was watching, but I still couldn't look away. What they put those girls through was AWFUL.
Sont b ashamed. It was a great entertaining show and wr all knew back then that Tyra was evil. We watched it for the models ot for Tyra
I remember seeing this show and thinking I'd never put up with this crap especially because it didn't seem to turn anyone into a top model.
I feel like Tyra had this mentality of “if I had to suffer through it so do you” or maybe she was trying to prove to others how “hard” it was to be a model as a way to validate her status in Hollywood
My mother was a beautician for 40 years and I've learned a _lot_ from her. Based on the valuable lessons I've learned let me just say this:
That thing about your hair always growing back is a _lie!_
Yes, your hair will continue to grow, but if you have especially long hair and cut it off on the premise that it will grow back eventually you are fooling yourself.
I am so thankful for your comment. I was considering cutting my hair which is all the way to my butt, but I won't do it now.
This is interesting, I buzzed (shaved my entire head) after having long hair for years,
and now my hair is longer and healthier than ever, far past my bra line almost to my belly button!
Tyra & Co. we’re treating these young women like disposable Barbie dolls with the hair situation. It’s sick to see🤮🤢
I feel like they picked on peoples traumas and used it against them in a shoot. That’s wild and sad smh
Maybe we got a jlo situation where she felt so threatened by other Latinas becoming to big where they would outshine her and Tyra might have been like that to some degree
used to be my fav show to watch too! but now looking back it is shocking and I am sorry for the girls that were treated so unfairly...
You're a sweetheart Sloan, you address complex issues with sensitivity & kindness to everyone as equal human beings (which we all are). Bullying knows no bounds & takes all of us to stand up against it ❤
She was brutal and honestly thought she was above everyone
24:58 isn't that the girl, Jael, that died in 2018 from cancer? I always felt bad for her..
Yes it is 😢❤
The whole race swapping was one of the biggest red flags for me. I'm amazed that this show was still on.
I love Tiffany and Tara treated her horribly
Yo your commentary cracks me up every time. My absolute FAVORITE yt channel ❤
I always hated her for her abusive attitude
“You gotta work extra hard now that you don’t have any hair on your head” said by Ms j with a smirk was so infuriating! How sadistic can one be
28:18 such a b****. She was on a mission to destroy her confidence
Yes and where us miss j now and how mean can one person be..how do these guys get successful by being so cruel to them all the time and he was a terrible man on that show
I think that “models stereotype” photoshoot was very valuable and important. It’s like a time capsule for where we were as a society and it’s a testament to how far we’ve come. I think it also prevents us from repeating those same mistakes!
