By the way an update. Today the Set Matte effect has an additional option to indicate if you wanna include the Masks/Effects applied to the control layer. So if you apply effects to the control layer, you can use it in Set Matte and the effects will show up in the Matte. HOWEVER, the concept of Compound Effect still holds. So if you move the matte around, it will have no affect (if you use an image as a matte that is)
