How to Strip Paint from an Antique Wood Door

- Stephen and I bought a home last year that was built in the 1870s. We are absolutely in love with this property. It is full of amazing old features like 5 antique entrance doors. Yes you read correctly, 5! This is not a large house but certainly has some rich history to explain the need for so many doors in such a small house.
The problem with these doors is they do not provide a good barrier against the elements, which we quickly noticed during our first winter here. So unfortunately we have had to replace all the exterior doors in order to make our home more efficient and more environmentally friendly.
However, there is no way we are parting with these amazing doors. We are repurposing the doors inside our home in a new renovation where we are converting an empty space into 2 closets and a laundry room. In this video you will learn how we safely stripped years of paint off of these doors to get them ready for their fresh coat of paint.
If you are interested in hearing more about our adventures in enhancing the beauty of this 1.5 century old home make sure to click that subscribe button below. We will be posting renovation videos as we complete projects in our home to modernize the building while respecting and protecting its history.

So satisfying! Great video, however it would be really helpful if you showed the products you used
It looks like Dumond paint remover. Dumond Smart Strip by Peel Away
The Dumond plastic wrap to help the paint stripper not dry out, can be substituted with normal plastic wrap such as Saran wrap. 🤓🤫 👍
Wow!! That is the most gorgeous front door! I am working on my 1800’s French doors that someone painted white and I will have to try peel away, they have sooo many nooks with each window. And the trick with the glass is amazing! I will have to try it on my front door glass also. Thank you for sharing! ❤
What stripper did you use for this product? Can you send me a list of products used. Thank you.
Liked this video, had no idea it was so easy to strip old paint from a wood surface! I think this video will do well when people are searching for how to restore a wooden door, or something to that effect. One suggestion I would make for future videos is to mention and show which product you used since many viewers would probably like to know that!
Personally I would have stained the door rather than paint it.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for your comment and suggestion! If you are interested in knowing what brand I used send me a message on facebook: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100084246339528 :)
@@StaticSpaces Absolutely, everyone has their own tastes. For us painting will fit our overall decor better than staining.
Thank you, this was exactly what I needed to see and hear. Now, off to find the products available in my area!
Very beautiful door!
Omg. Thank you for your video❤
You’re welcome! 😊 We’re glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful door! I have thought about trying peel away myself.
Thank you! You totally should give it a try, and if you do, let us know how it goes. 😃
How long did you let the stripper set for?
What paint remover did you use? What plastic covering did you use?
I see in the comments that you used peel away. What product did you use for the neutralizer afterwards and what is this paper called?? Thanks
How do I get the blotchiness removed and I still have white paint in bedded in the wood that I cannot get out with remover and I would like to have a natural finish when I am done
What brand paint stripper did you use? I was impressed how well it work from other videos
Im trying to strip an old door right now. Ive been using Klean Strip because I heard it was good but it doesnt seem to do as good for me as other videos I've seen. Spent 4 hours on one side, 3 hours on the other and im still not completely down to the bare wood, but I can see the grain one 1 side. The other side seems to have a yellow skin over the wood that the Klean Strip doesnt seem to break down, so Im thinking about just trying to sand it down to the wood. What would you suggest?
It sounds like you might have a lot of paint layers. The amount of paint and type of paint can impact the stripping process. Maybe there are some varnish layers on there creating the yellowing. Although, we did find the white paint turned yellowish after applying the paint stripper. If you are confident you are using the product as recommended you could try another product. We used Peel Away. We personally found sanding takes a ton of time and effort and has not been worthwhile for us in the past. You can also try using a heat gun to peel away the paint. This has worked very well for cleaning up our trim. Good luck! We would love an update when you have a chance.
What Paint remover did you use?
I see the title of the music for the video but I can't find the name of the stripper used to perform the work. Would you please reveal the name of the stripper and the source? Thank you

How did you end up finishing this door? We are about to move into a farmhouse built in 1909 and they’ve painted over all the solid wood doors and I want to restore them! Do you have a video showing how you dealt with the discoloration on the wood door? Thank you! 😊
Congratulations on the new, old house! Old houses are so wonderfully rich in detail and have so much more life to them.
We are still in the process of finishing the door. Renovations are on a pause right now as we recently welcomed our first child into our home. However, we are going to paint the door and is why we went this route. We are not certain about how to, or if it is possible to remove the leftover discolouration. We have heard of wood bleach which may work but I worry with the patchiness of discolouration the wood bleach would be tricky to even out the tones. Doing another round of paint remover may also fix the issue. However, a safer bet, if you want to stain rather than paint, is to use a heat gun to remove the paint. We plan to make a video in the future for this technique, but there are other how-to videos out there right now from other channels.
Good luck with the process and enjoy your new home! We would love an update in the future to hear how you make out. 😃
@@CraftersGrove thank you so much for response! Congratulations on the new addition to your family! I look forward to seeing how your door turns out!
Thank you Abbie! 😊
If you want to stain the door instead of painting it, what is the process to remove the staining from this wet process?
Hi Peter Rabbit, great question. It may be possible to remove the darker stains by applying more coats of the paint remover. However, we have not tried that yet so cannot say for sure. We have been using a heat gun to strip the paint off of some wood trim which has left a near perfect surface that would do well with being stained. We plan to release a video showing this paint removal technique in 2023. Good luck with your project!
This is so helpful. What cream paint stripper did you use?
I’m glad the video has helped! We used Peel Away.
@@CraftersGrove what was your neutralizer? I use water and vinegar mix to clean off the residue.
Wat paint remover you use I don’t have facebook
We used Peel Away.
Guess I should have watched this first I used a respirator and a heat gun with scraper.
This is essentially lye and lime
This video is worthless. You didn’t tell us the product or how long you let it sit.
Terrible.
