  • At long last the saga of the Davinci Color comes to a close, and it's not a happy ending. But before we put the Davinci Color out to pasture, let's talk about how and why this printer was revolutionary and how it could still change the face of 3D printing forever.

      There are some great ideas here.
      I agree that with some minor changes (White inner layers to help with the "transperentness" (is that a word?), and a little better design to implement color) this could be a great idea.

      @@Outofthedust I suspect they went with a semi-transparent base color because a "pure" white would not be able to absorb the ink fast enough to make a quick transition without purging. Hence the prints end up sort of colored...ish. A for effort, D+/C- for execution.

    I work at a place that does printing and we use a lot of inks that don't dry until you heat it to around 300f. There are also uv curing inks, so that printer could theoretically be "fixed". You might mention it to them.

    Here is the motivation for the manufacturers - ink jet cartridges. While no one wants premium proprietary filament rolls, where the prints fail and you waste plastic. Being well trained by the paper printer manufactures, we would grudgingly pay a fortune for the ink.

    I eventually put all of my inkjet printers in the bin and got a color laser printer instead. While photos don't come out as nicely and you can't print on glossy photo paper, the toner never dries out because toner is actually small plastic particles. I wonder if they could do something with that. Anyway, I so wanted this printer to work. Full color 3D printing for prosumers would be awesome.

    I personally think davinci is garbage. My brother in law bought one. It quit working and it needed a heater cartridge after one week. They wanted us to buy a complete print head. They wouldn't allow us to take it apart. Luckily it was purchased on Amazon so it was easy enough to return.
    Personally I believe that davinci could be a greater company if they were open source and allowed community input. It's part of the reason that prusa is successful. Sure josef prusa designed the i3. But the community involvement is what helped hin get where he is today.

    We are considering picking one of these up for one of the classes I teach at my high school. I believe we are looking at the Da Vinci Color Mini though. From what I've read, the Color Mini doesn't use separate cartridges for each color, but instead uses a combo cartridge (makes sense since the whole thing is smaller). While I think it would look "cool" to the kids (we are trying to recruit underclassmen to sign up for our academy/programs of study...I teach engineering tech and design tech), I don't know if it could handle the workload of a classroom, let's say 30 students? What do you think? Really LOVE all your videos and reviews. Should we invest in one of these? We have a MaketBot Replicator +, MakerBot Mini, and a Lulzbot Taz 6. I commented on another video of yours regarding our desire to purchase some mini sized 3d printers we can go mobile with for workshops (am now looking into the Adventurer 3 per your suggestion). Our other desire is to somehow achieve multi-color prints. I'm debating between trying the Da Vinci Color Mini OR looking into a Mosaic Palette 2 Pro (apparently it can work with the MakerBot Replicator +) though that can only use up to 4 colors. Would really appreciate your thoughts on this, thank you so much!

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  4 года назад +2

      IN the end I wish I was getting through 30 prints before the thing was breaking down. I don't know if the mini is better or if it has the same problems, but I suspect the latter.
      As for a palate pro, I don't think it will work with a Rep+ becuase Rep+'s don't use GCode. In fact they're pretty much designed for Prusa's, but they won't admit that, from the sort of GCode they produce to the connections that they have. I'm gonna be playing with one with my JGAurora A5S soon, and I'll have the results of that as soon as I can, but I'm gonna have to gerry rig a connector.

    When my 9th cartridge failed at over 90% full and the 'special print' designed to unclog it stopped working... My davinci colour was relegated to the scrap heap. I can't even sell it on in good faith as there are printers out there that produce better - less ghosting - prints out of the box and don't require the special filament. I was so sad. If only it would have kept printing at the same consistency as when I got it I would have been beside myself giddy with it. I am excited with the E3D tool changer. Maybe an inkjet head that only stored a few ml of ink that was refillable... I'd pay the manufacturer to be locked into that because I wouldn't waste so much with a full sized cartridge at £60 a go... XYZ wouldn't even entertain me returning them, but I understand why. But then the first model of most things is pretty lousy, so lets hope it starts a revolution like regular 3D printing did. I wish I had thought of the full-colour draft shield though :)

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  4 года назад +1

      Now that I have the 0% after one print error happened, I suspect that my cartridges that were saying they were at 90% were actually empty, the chip was just faulty in the other direction.

    I think the idex idea would be the way to correct this. Inkjet printers have a rubber like bay they sit in when not being used. I also think the heat from the hotend is probably where its failures lie. Would be interesting to see mods done to this printer to turn it into idex if at all possible.

    The idea that this triggered for me is that we need an open source equivalent of Uber for 3d printing. It seems a waste to have such a machine sitting idle just because you don't have a compelling use for it. Meanwhile, somebody who wanted this capability from a service is deciding to pass it up because the rate that the service charges for it is too expensive. Now, I'm not proposing that a professor spend his time baby sitting a 3d printer for the benefit of someone getting a cool miniature. Instead, I see a 4-way arrangement. Someone has a 3d printer that they are not actively using. Some Junior in high school to Junior in college has basic technical competence in 3d printer operation and maintenance. A client wants to make a 3d print with particular characteristics (filament type, coloring, etc). And system matches this all together. The printer owner provides the capital for the machine. The operator gets a fair wage for baby sitting the printer and prints. The customer pays for the service. The developers get compensated at a reasonable rate for putting the system together.

      @@3dpprofessor Dang. Unlike with driving, there really seems like there is a real economic benefit for this. My assessment of Uber is that it is net negative, compared to folks owning cars. It doubles the manpower associated with car transport, while turning the drivers effectively into sharecroppers. They think that they are earning money, but are basically generating cash flow from using up the equity that they have in their cars. Which they borrowed in the first place.

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  3 года назад

      @@richdobbs6595 The problem with 3dhubs is people with crappy printers and customers with high expectations weren't meeting in the middle. @@3dpprofessor I guess there is a basic issue regarding consumer level FDM printing. I really struggle to find things that make sense to print, given the design effort, failed prints, strength limitations, cost of filament, lack of prospect for scaling up, etc. Most of the time it seems like if I want something, its just better to go into my workshop and build it using woodworking, epoxy putty, hacksaws and drills. And even more of the time I'm discouraged that I can either do without, or just buy it cheaper.

      @@richdobbs6595 There is, like, the promise of 3d printing vs reality.

    From what I can see there is definitly an issue with overalll color saturation. Sure the Mosiac Palette can only print four colors and there's definitlly waste but they'll be as saturated as the filament you're using. Eh...It's a tradeoff.

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  4 года назад

      Interestingly I discovered that if you color the back of a thin color print with opaque white (I used nail polish) the colors suddenly pop and are well saturated. So maybe the solution is as easy as dual nozzles, one to do the outside most shell in color soaking ink, the other to do the inner shells in opaque white. It's more complex, but it should work.

      You've posted a ton on this video, and they all have the same reply. These are amazing machines, but they're still only limited color. To switch colors you need to purge the nozzle, so it cant' do discreet changes, it can't print a photo on the side of a print, or do white and black newsprint. And the process or making models for these are completely different. For these you need to make seperate STLs for each color, for the Davinci Color you only need to make an OBJ with color data on it. Apples and oranges. Both have their application.
