    Can’t tell you how excited I was when I discovered you did mix breakdowns!!
    And to now find out you mixed this song?!
    Even more amazing because this is literally my country’s genre!!
    I’ve picked up so much from the video already and I’m just half way through!
    I’d definitely appreciate more Afrobeats-centered mixes!🫡

    Thanks alot for the insights of a worldwide smash!
    I see you do alot of (what you even self describe as) basic editing. I havent seen a single UAD plugin on here or anything too fancy or advanced and it still sounds so polished.
    Do you ever use UAD-plugins?
    The way you give yourself headroom is what I do as a routine aswell. But do you ever gain stage before starting on a mix or do you have another philosofi on that?
    Thanks alot again for the time you spend on showing us this! Its absolutely awesome!

    • @djswivel
      @djswivel  2 года назад +5

      Never used UAD. I'm sure they're great but a good plugin doesn't make the song. I have my own tools and others which have fit into my workflow for years, and don't see any need to switch it up.

    • @djswivel
      @djswivel  3 года назад +1

      Some, but it’s spread out throughout the stereo field. Having the center in anchors the delay a bit but it won’t feel like it’s covering up the lead as much.

  • @smileyface3107
    @smileyface3107 3 года назад +1

    Hey Swivel,
    Do you use bands for processing? Like only applying reverb to mid frequencies. I know your sauce plugin does that with saturation.
    I feel like it allows for more control I just never know when to use bands.
    Great video!!

    • @djswivel
      @djswivel  3 года назад +5

      Thank you! Actually, using the sauce you can technically apply any effect to a single band, reverb included. The reality is, music is a world of infinite possibilities, and so I always say just experiment. Try putting the reverb just on the mis, and see what it does. You may find it helps glue your vocal to the track better. Train your ears, learn the tools, and then have fun. That's the best way to discover new tricks and techniques!

  • @tyyleerr
    @tyyleerr Год назад +3

    What level should the beat be sitting at?

    • @djswivel
      @djswivel  Год назад +2

      Hey Tyler Tyler! Here's the fun thing about mixing, levels are relative to each other, no matter what it says on the meters...what's most important is the balance of the beat to the vocal, and that may or may not change throughout different parts of the track. It's cliche to say, but use your ears and trust your gut, the more you do this the more it will sound natural to you! As long as nothing is distorting, then you can use limiting to get it up to the loudness you want. Hope that helps man!

    Hey DJ Swivel! How much DB of GR do engineers approximately apply while recording through the LA2A / CL1B for pop/ rap artists? Is it somewhere between 3 and 5 db or is it common to use way more compression, up to 10/ 15db? Thanks & Greetingz! ⭐️

    • @djswivel
      @djswivel  Месяц назад

      @@poppasmoke4933 3-5is a good place to start. It really depends on the vocalist, how dynamic they are, their recording technique, and the sound you’re going for on the song. But as a general rule, for basic control on the way in 3-5db is solid advice.

    • @djswivel
      @djswivel  Год назад +1

      Sometimes I do when they're necessary. But I don't have a clear rule that I need busses. For example, often times I receive files with many different styles of bass. A live bass, a sub bass, an 808, a Reese. They each require a different approach. Some need to be more dynamic than others. Some need sub frequencies, some don't. Some need to be filtered, some don't. Point being, it's easier to treat each element separately. Also printing stems with any sort of dynamics on your bus becomes challenging at times. That said, I do often use busses, I just use them more strategically and only when necessary.
