Good commentary on low trust vs high trust society, I think you're onto something there.
Great insightful video Dusan! I find your videos really fascinating to see how things operate in Croatia.
Very interesting. I had a sole trader business in Scotland and it is indeed very easy to set up such a business. I was doing appliance repairs and at one point did think about doing something similar in Croatia. There was a local unemployed guy who helped me with odd jobs like digging the hole for the septic tank. I was thinking of starting a partnership with him, teaching him the repair work but leaving him to do the paperwork, dealing with customers etc. In the event he got a job so was not available. There are no other expats in my area so it was never an option to target expats as customers.
Very interesting to hear your perspective and experience of Croatia and it's people. It seems that in Croatia just like in most European countries such as the Netherlands, the government doesn't like small independent entrepreneurs and rather have people as wage slaves so they can get the max amount of tax revenue. I have heard many Germans talking more positively about Bosnia and Hercegovina which has much less regulations and much lower tax rates. So this might be a much more interesting option if ones want to move to the Balkan region. Because of the all the regulation on personal enterprises Croatia is properly not suitable for off-grid enthusiasts. The country might still be interesting for digital nomads more so then western Europe.
Yea, the hoops the government put in front of us that want to do anything is rather crazy...
Priority depends on rural vs urban...
In rural areas we put priority on having a good tractor, also making dried meat produce in the winter. :D
Everything you said about Croatians is 💯% spot on correct😅.. I have the same experience. Even the locals agree👍😅
100% Spot on. I have mid size bussines (12 employees) for 25 years now, and is based is Split, and we spend day or two in Zadar every week.
You have described situation in geat detail. No one would ask you why are you dropping bussines leaflets in mail boxes in Split, Zagreb or Rijeka.
Zadar is less relaxed than rest, like small Texan town. But at least it is safe, your children can go out to play any time.
For larger deals with less known customer, asking for down payment (materials and expanses) is a good idea in any bussines of our types.
I enjoyed watching the video even though I have nothing to do with plumbing or trade jobs.
It’s very interesting to observe how things work in different countries. I lived in Spain and Cyprus for a bit and what was annoying to me is that things are getting done at such a slow pace. I can see where an expat worker could definitely prosper while offering efficiency and quality.
Sometimes I think it’s such a shame that people don’t maximise their full potential and productivity and lots of things are still being done in archaic ways. If only I could mix some things from England and Croatia I could create a perfect country 😂
Opening customer service business (as in, providing plumbing services directly to customers) without knowing language majority of your customers speak is very brave. First rule for anyone that want's to relocate and live in another country is to learn local language. It sucks that you're credentials weren't recognized, but that's bureaucracy. If you were EU citizen, they would probably recognize it ( i'm not 100% when it comes to trades). JDOO is simple limited liability company. Other form is obrt and there i paušal obrt. Unlike with doo/jdoo, which is it's own legal entity and has it's own OIB, obrt has your personal OIB, and you are personally responsible. In practice, if someone sues you for damages, jdoo/doo answers with company property, so if company doesn't have enough money, tough luck. But in obrt, your personal property can be sold to pay for damages caused by your business. That's why most people prefer jdoo/doo. Plumbers and other skilled tradesman are currently in high demand in Croatia, so 1700 e/month isn't that much money to make.
This brings tears to my eyes, my son! Congratulations! You are now proper Croatian! And with this "certification", you'll be recognized in any ex-yu region. (this is a joke, just like in MWC, when Bud got robbed of his money from his sister and Al said something similar to "congratulation my son, you just become a man - some woman took your money") -- anywayz, I like your videos!
