Composition and recording
This track was written mainly by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. Barry worked out the melody with keyboard player Blue Weaver, though he is not credited officially as a songwriter here. Co-producer Albhy Galuten later admits the contribution of Weaver on this track, "One song where Blue [Weaver] had a tremendous amount of input. There was a lot of things from his personality. That's one where his contribution was quite significant, not in a songwriting sense, though when you play piano, it's almost like writing the song. Blue had a lot of influence in the piano structure of that song".
Weaver tells his story behind this track:
"One morning, it was just myself and Barry in the studio. He said, 'Play the most beautiful chord you know', and I just played, what happened was, I'd throw chords at him and he'd say, 'No, not that chord', and I'd keep moving around and he'd say, 'Yeah, that's a nice one' and we'd go from there. Then I'd play another thing - sometimes, I'd be following the melody line that he already had and sometimes I'd most probably lead him somewhere else by doing what I did. I think Robin came in at some point. Albhy also came in at one point and I was playing an inversion of a chord, and he said, 'Oh no, I don't think it should be that inversion, it should be this', and so we changed it to that, but by the time Albhy had come in, the song was sort of there."
I am 59 and this is one of my favorite songs
One of the most beautiful love songs ever written In history. I'm 60 and still listening to this beautiful song today.
“My heart is in that song.” And what a heart it is. Man…
Blue deserved writing credits on some of their songs.
Songbird (B. R. M. Gibb & Blue Weaver)
@@bgs3006 I know of the songs he got credit on, but he deserved credit on others as well.
@@Wok-y-Taco Which songs?
He’s also credited for Our Love, Don’t throw it all away - Remember How Deep is Your Love was going on a soundtrack and no one thought it was going to even sell. It surprised everyone!! If you really listen, Barry is the one with the song in his head 👍🏻
@@sallyhallada Oh yes, I remember "Don't Throw It All Away" now, done by B. & Blue Weaver. "The Way It Was" is another one. Written by B. R. Gibb & Blue Weaver. And, yes, Barry was once again the driving force behind the songwriting.
What a wonderful thing to hear their beautiful creative process! Just wonderful! Thank you for sharing this divinely inspired creation. 021123
With pleasure...thanks for your comment
I have to agree! How wonderful to hear how this beautiful song took shape. What a treasure to have this piece of music history preserved.
My eternal idols. Blue Weaver was a Bee Gees too.
So was Alan Kendall, and for much longer than Blue Weaver was too.
@@LynseyFenton Bill Shepherd, Vince Melouney, Colin Petersen, Geoff Bridgeford, Alan Kendall, Blue Weaver and Dennis Bryon. The true Bee Gees band members. Unforgetable.
Made me tear up. So beautiful. God was there. ❤
This is treasure. Can’t believe it’s at 15k not 15m views, where’s everybody?! A gem.
This song was written when I was 8 years old and it 2023 and I am 55 years old . It’s still my favourite song. It’s simply beautiful and meaningful. Thank you for creating this song.
We’re the same age, and i second everything you’ve said.
the year of this kind of music and before them are we called the era of Classic Golden Music. I am born on 1977 I begin to love music at age of 5 or 6 and able to operate the music component pioneer whether my dad was at home or not, of course at a young age you wont understand but frequent listening it develops or being acquired it. The saddest part now, the component system is no longer operational because of termites that penetrated the pcb board 😢 its still here also the speakers the height is up to waist line ooohh geesh
i am listening at youtube choosing the vinyl or gramophone
this is the classic of classic singers , the sound is genuinely awesome and unique if its played there wow especially the base drum boom boom 😊❤
watching this , the story of the song , how was it created is so amazing to know. At first we may thought its simple but its not.
There are instances the lyrics are written first then melody be it in piano or guitar will be fitted then revision of lyrics while melody is being put up.
Or, here is the melody then will be filled by lyrics, i rhink like that one being shared How Deep is Your Love
😊❤
Hearing songs like this actually being written sends shivers down your spine. Amazing
My favorite song of all time, I really love this song. Back in 2005, when I first heard this song Grade 6/ 12 year old, there's a feeling that this is it.
I still remember that Sunday morning, 2021 when my father was still here and he is sitting on a chair listen to the radio and that song How Deep In Your Love. I noticed that he is trying to stop his tears, maybe the memories of the past especially the 70s and no idea were his old friends are and where are they before the day he died, those he work with in the construction and in the security. For my father, when he heard that song, there's a flashback of that decade in his mind. He love the 70s.
Thank you so much for the creation of this song.
This is absolutely a treat for all their fans. So grateful to hear their creative juices flowing. Some of my favorite parts are Robin frequently interjecting "like a summer breeze", and then harmonizing in falsetto. All three brothers were amazingly talented. Blue Weaver is awesome.
I'm thankful to have been part of this era of such talented singers and songwriters..
He is achnowledged on many of the biographies out there about this amazing band . Teh band members were very loyal & well taken care of by the GIBB brothers! They were family!!! Please don't try to muddy up the circumstances!!!
@@donnapalmisano8307Dennis Bryon wasn't.
A timeless classic but how Blue Weaver was never given credit on the writing amazes me
... Não foi Barry o autor?
It's just so wonderful to hear them progress though their creative magic which eventually ended up in my opinion being their greatest love song ever! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this with us!
With pleasure...Thanks for your comment
What a treat .. a wonderful piece of history of the best band that ever lived! Thank you so much…
Gladly
All the "da da da" and "something something..." make me feel a little better about my own song-writing process. You can just hear them molding a masterpiece out of the clay of musical ideas.
_Hey there, BG's... I remember reacting to this... but just shorter clips and cuts. Really love hearing Blue and Barry practice this in more detail! Thanks!_
Hey Chad, nice of you to check out my channel. Yes, the recordings are quite a gem. I'm happy, that you like it. The distribution of voices is also pretty clear: mostly Barry on the left and Robin on the right.
The BeeGees are the single greatest songwriters in history and today i feel in this modern age they are so easily forgotten and thrown aside but if everyone would just dig a little deeper and really listen to their music, especially in the early days, their whole world of music will open up. They have written songs you didn't even know they had a hand in writing. They sounded like the Beatles before the Beatles even existed. they have the best three(four with andy) part harmony that is unmatched in todays modern era.
Blue was a huge part of writing this immortal BeeGees hit. You can feel his emotion in this clip.
This is wonderful! I feel so privileged to hear the genesis of the greatest love song ever written. ❤️
We all do
@@bgs3006 I could kiss Blue Weaver for pressing the record button that day.
Wow, this is amazing. We get to hear this song being made!!! This was simply wonderful to be a “fly on the wall” and hear this.
The greatest ever. They deserved better, but too much envy…❤❤❤
Blue Weaver repeatedly playing that major chord at "cuz we're living in a world of fools" cracked me up. Every single time 🤣🤣
Blue Weaver actually found the minor chord at 6:01 then used it at 6:51 for the ''We belong to you and me'' bit and the end of the chorus.
My favorite song by these brothers. Beautiful.Thank you for sharing. 💜🎶🎵🎹🎸
My pleasure. Thanks for your comment.
@@bgs3006 Your welcome.🎶🎵🎹
I think this Is One of the best love Song in the story of the music. Gianluca from Italy.
Oh my God....when genius are working!!!❤❤❤❤
it just struck me while listening to this, how much they sounded like the simplicity of James Taylor, but unlike Taylor, they went the extra mile and took the song to the top, getting more and more out of it. That is the difference.
It has been stated by several that Barry was VERY generous with writing credits.
I first heard this at the cinema from the Saturday Night Fever film. It moved me to tears back then and still does. I hear that magnificent harmony intro and I’m gone. The melody is exquisite, the arrangement, perfect, lyrics, sublime. Such a heartfelt song and oh so musical! Like angels dancing on the eardrums. Beautiful!

This song was SO superior to the SNF film; BUT it did give the Bee Gees further worldwide exposure. As Robin Gibb said, "SNF was not Gone With The Wind." ;)
Greatest......brought tears to my eyes
Blue Definitely should have been included in the Credits of this song. I absolutely love watching this song being Born. What a treat to be able to witness this. I was once in Mexico for an over extended stay and was homesick then I heard this song playing and I was so touched because in a way it brought the USA 🇺🇸 right back to me and I actually cried. Great songs last forever 🎉❤. Blessings from Paso Robles, California, Carlos ✝️🙏❤️😊🇺🇸
Absolutely agree that Blue deserved FAR MORE CREDIT than he ever received and not just in this composition.
YES
I can't stop crying. This is too much Heaven for us ❤❤❤️
It is quite interesting to see how the song writing creativity all comes together.
Such fun to listen to their creative genius! Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure
This is amazing! I find myself almost urging them to get it right! That's it, you've almost got it! 😂 Geniuses at work 🙏👌
By the sounds of it once Robin had convinced Barry of the summer breeze line it fell together as that line sets the rest of the bridge up ( 'breeze' would require one or a run of couplets) so you can imagine them going through the possibilities 'ease' or 'please' etc. trying to bridge the gap until they hit gold with the leave/me/need, also I love how the line 'then you softly leave' perfectly mirrors how tenderly Blue was playing that moment, brilliantly intuative writing, such a great document, wish there was more
A quote from Mo said he and Barry wrote several songs in the US when Robin was sick in the UK. He said they were awful. When Robin arrived and included his input they were perfect. Galuten also said Robin was more detached from the musicians who concentrated on their instruments and when Robin came in with his good musical ear he knew whether a song was right or wrong and was always correct. Same with Blue, he deserved much more credit as a contributing composer. He was an amazing talent. Barry usually took most of the credit.
Apesar de tantas hipóteses, é intrigante ver quão é complexo escrever uma música, quantos detalhes. So os predestnados conseguem . Incrível ❤
Amazing! They were so talented! And still are!
👍🏻 legends
Amazing hearing a masterpiece being created from nothing, and very moving how great they worked together 👌👌👌
E ainda existem tantos comentários que não se entendiam????🤔
I absolutely loved this part of the documentary. It really shows you the intimate process of making a song and how significant the memory can be. I love this song so much more now. It used to be this annoying love song I always heard my family play in our Honda Pilot, but now it holds so much meaning, so much nostalgia, and optimism...
It’s a MASTERPIECE…one that shines very bright amongst MANY MANY BG’s masterpieces. WHAT A GEM of a recording of the creation. ❤️👏💙🙏👍💪💥🚀
Thank you for this inside look at the song writing of one of the most beautiful song ever created. The Bee Gees were masterful and they created masterpieces. God blessed them with so much talent. May their legacy live on.
I'm so glad this video exists. Of all the songs from SNF, this one has stuck with me since I bought the album as a preteen in '77, and i _never_ get tired of it. The Gibbs tapped into something so... well, _deep_ with this song. Depending on my mood, the sheer beauty of it can still bring me to tears.
Some people like to talk about songwriting as if it's some magical process, but hearing this shows how much craftsmanship goes into it, at least for the Gibb brothers. I knew they were careful songwriters, but it's great to hear them actually working their way towards what would become one of the most beautiful melodies of all time.
Love BeeGe3s. Listen EVERY DAY. Never tire of their absolutely beautiful voices. 17:07

Yes one of the best songs ever written …, they were asked to write the best love song ever written ummm did the person who requested this not ever hear To Love Somebody? I guess not , so they delivered another best love song ever written! They make it seem easy ! the masters of brilliant songs period!😅
What a gem! Thank you for sharing.
It's a pleasure
I am coming new to this situation, but why is Blue not credited as a songwriter? He’s clearly driving all of the beautiful, colorful chord changes in this song. Has he ever spoken about this? There better be a good explanation otherwise it’s a serious crime.
I find it at least questionable, no matter how the explanation attempts turn out. However, I think it would be exaggerated to describe it as a serious crime, although I would have wished him from the bottom of my heart to be listed as the songwriter. For me would have been there B.R.M. Gibb & B. Weaver
Are you an idiot? You can't get credited for writing a song if you're only creating a chord sequence - and he's not even doing that. Barry is guiding him to what he was hearing in his head. Serious crime? Get a life. He earned millions of dollars in his association with the Bee Gees and was credited on other songs where he came up with the actual melody. If you want to know of some real ''serious crimes'' go and talk to Rod Stewart and Van Morrison. They shafted everyone and took the money and ran. All ''Work for hire'' fees and no royalties whatsoever. Utterly pathetic.
@@bgs3006 But he didn't write the song, Barry did. Let me explain to you that the way music copyright works is you have to come up with a melody or lyric to be credited as a songwriter. Blue contributed 100% to the arrangement, not the song. He played all the keyboard parts and did a great job. But the credit B, R & M Gibb is correct.
@@LynseyFenton Thanks for that explanation. Mm... I still find it a bit inadequate. The melody wasn't even finished yet, apparently only really worked out during this session. Also, as is easy to see, Robin and Maurice were also involved, not just Barry. I know it is said that Blue provided the input for this song and then Barry wrote the melody on his own. But where is the real difference?
@@LynseyFenton Your explanation is incorrect. There are three parts to songwriting not two. These are the lyrics, melody and composition. By the looks of it, Blue wrote the composition and should have been credited as songwriter. You are also wrong about the arranging too. The arrangement mainly takes place during the production process not the songwriting process. The arrangement are the instruments that go on top of the composition. In the case of this song, that will be all the of string parts etc
If you go looking you can watch an interview with Blue Weaver in 2021 where he talks about the other bands he worked for doing what he did with the BeeGees. He talks extensively about them and about going to Barry s 50th birthday. Hd got on really well with them and didn't have a bad thing to say about them. One of the other bands he worked with was the Strawbs. I'm sure he got paid well for his work by all the bands he did arrangements for.
This history from the Bee Gees is wanderphul!!! The best forever!!!
My favourite Bee Gees song ❤❤❤
И моя тоже!
Thank you for posting this. It's wonderful. Such talented boys.
It is such a treasure to see y'all in action!!! The words justn flow down from a magical place into y'alls hearts & souls!!! AMAZING!!!! Thank you so much Blue I've been very aware of your input for as many years!~!! 40 PHENOMENAL YEARS !!! Thanks my friend for this jewel!!!

Blue said in a recent interview that he started writing a song after Robin’s death but didn’t complete it. He said the only person that could finish it was Barry. I really hope that happens.
Thank you so very much, for posting this absolutely priceless moment. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

Wonderful recording, we are really lucky for those people.
BEE GEES ILUMINADOS POR DEUS. Gratidão por fazer a minha vida menos triste. AMO BEE GEES. Hoje so resta 1 deles, mas representa seu grupo com sua maestria e multi talentos! 🥰🥰🥰
I wonder how much Weaver got paid for such a session. Not all songs resulting from such a session result in a major world hit, though, like this one. But yes, the "tonality" and "mood" of the song is really a result of the chord creativity by Blue Weaver, even if the main melody sprung out of Barry's head.
Goose bumps !!
Brilliant, simply brilliant.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Amo BeeGees ❤❤❤Sinto tanta falta deles, carrego as lembranças em meu coração.❤
Going inside the creation itself. Amazing really.
Priceless

This brings warm feelings
A quote from Mo....Barry and I wrote several songs in the US while Robin was ill in the UK, and they were awful. When Robin arrived and inserted his input they were perfect. Galuten also said Robin had a great ear and while the musicians were more fixated on the contributions of their individual instruments, he could see the whole composition and knew what was working and what wasn't and he was always right. Same with Blue and Alan. They didn't get enough credit for their massive contributions and still don't. Same with Mo's keyboard contributions, not to mention his bass work. Without the structural foundation provided by the musicians, songs don't exist. Barry was a good composer with a knack for catchy pop tunes but claims much more credit than he should have and that should have been shared with his cohorts. In addition, the Bee Gees were accused of plagiarism over this song when this is proof they composed it.
That is so true. I feel upset that many people consider Barry as the writer of many of their songs, while his brothers are not recognized. They often quote Barry's words that the person who sings lead is often the one who comes up with the idea. Maybe I haven't watched all of Barry's interviews, but my impression is that he said it after the twins passed away. In their early interviews, I clearly remember them saying that the song would go to the person whose voice was better suited to it.
That said, I would not argue that Barry was the main "conceptualizer" of many songs if he was telling the truth. However, Robin had an amazing knowledge and instinct for music that contributed greatly to their songwriting. Same with Mo's contribution to arrangement and instruments.
I also agree that the "band" members - Blue Weaver, Alan Kendall, and Dennis Bryon should be given more credit although I am never a big fan of their hit albums in the late 70's. Interestingly, Blue, Alan, and Dennis were "fired" in 1980 after the big success. Presumably, it was Barry's decision because he preferred working with session musicians during the Guilty album as "they could play exactly what Barry wanted" (a quote from Gibb songs). This also makes me wonder whether Barry got much more "power" after becoming the sole showman during the Fever period. Did everyone agree on it? Maybe. Yet it is such a pity that the twins and these musicians were not highlighted enough given their distribution. Sorry to end on a negative note. I hope you had a lovely weekend 😊.
Sorry I’m a bit confused about the statement that Alan was fired in 1980 when he was on tour with them in the 1989 Melbourne concert
Eles são único eterno e especial pra nós todos ⭐⭐🌟⭐💕💕💕❤️
This is great stuff.
At some stage it would be a great idea for someone (e.g. Barry) to write a biography.
I've just subscribed to the channel and see there is a rich source of excellent material.

Great👍 Thanks!
It is in the works.
Barry said last December while being interviewed after the Kennedy Center Honors that he is writing his biography and the Bee Gees movie is still in the works.

Why was, or would be raining , if the morning sun was shining and visible? Sounded like they needed the lyrics first, then add the music underneath it. But these guys did write the soundtrack to the 2nd part of the twentieth century, so it worked out beautifully anyhow.

The words aren't important. You know the words. The words just followed the "la"s.
Wish we had captions of the session dialogue. Hard to make out.
the piano player not getting a writing credit is a crime.
Why Blue Weaver never got a songwriting credit i'll never know.
I love the piano. Who was playing it? It's the motor of the song..They really persevered & fought hard to get the song & lyrics right.
