      If you are turning/re surfacing the rotors be prepared for them not having enough thickness to re surface. Cheap rotors these days and can usually be resurfaced ONCE. After that the minimum thickness to resurface might be gone. A legitimate shop would refuse and the minimum thickness should be stamped on the rotor either on the vent side or the rotor hat.

      The idea of compressing the caliper piston flush is like he explained is to make up the difference. Thickness between the old pads and new ones.

    • @gkelly941
      @gkelly941 5 лет назад +1

      I am used to working on older Mercedes, but the factory service manuals do not recommend resurfacing rotors when you replace brake pads. Insread, they recommend that you "bed in" the new pads by a series of gentle stops. If you have flutter when braking, I would suggest getting a dial indicator and checking the rotors for warping after removing the wheels. It may be that you are close enough to the wear limits that you will want to replace the rotors, anyway.

    Hey brother, great video however allow me to give you some tough love regarding safety. Rule 1: Never put your fingers underneath the wheel when the car is jacked. Or any dark places for that matter that you cannot see well even if the engine is not running. Almost lost a finger like that. Rule 2: Always use proper jack stands if you are going to perform vehicle maintenance at your home garage and i don't mean the cheap ones from harbor freight, walmart etc or some cheaply made stuff but invest in some proper certified jack stands. My guess is that if you can afford such a car you can definitely afford 4 proper jack stands and probably a decent hydraulic jack. That's a 2 ton car and you don't want that thing falling on you so even if you use jack stands you must leave the jack at the place you have lifted the car at the first place. Also once you are probably bleeding the breaks and change break pads i suggest you remove all 4 wheels and place them underneath the car in case you will be working under it or do an oil change. If you have trouble removing the wheel nuts use a metal pipe/tube fitting it over the breaker bar for extra leverage. Wear a small face mask when cleaning the dust break the rest is just fine and i enjoy watching car maintenance video so thanks for the video.

      If you need to compress the caliper piston use the pad that is being removed and a C clamp to slowly compress. No sense in risking damage to the new pads....gouge , Knick, crack or possibly separate from the backing pad.

    • @SpartanBeard
      @SpartanBeard 5 лет назад

      Correct! I Used The Old Brake Pad To Open The Caliper.

  • @theguch9038
    @theguch9038 4 года назад +2

    You put the front left inner pad on the right side when you changed pads because you didn't like the way the sensor fit. The pads are marked on the backs and ARE different. The sensor has two wires because the wire makes a loop in the pin section of the sensor. Once the rotor wears though the pin it cuts the wire and turns on the light on the dash. So no, you can't reuse them.

    But do your family a favor, and get some jack stands to hold the car up when you are working on it, rather than having the car supported only by the jack. Also, use brake pad paste on the back of the new pads to prevent brake squeal, rather than anti-seize b/c it won't melt and migrate in high braking tempjeratuess. And don't forget to put a drop of blue Loctite n the bolts when you put things back together. Good luck

      That is good to know. I changed mine today and also did the rotors. Mercedes recommends changing them on the basis that they are thinner than most, and therefore cannot be resurfaced on a lathe. The rotors came with a grey primer, which i removed with brake cleaner before installation. I see a lot of questions online about the affect of paint on the new pads if the paint is not removed.

    • @SpartanBeard
      @SpartanBeard 6 лет назад +1

      Correct! Mercedes Recommends Changing Rotors And Pads Together, But Since I Had Less Than A 1mm Of The Lip On The Edge I Decided To Give It A Shot. As Far As The Primer On Rotors Is Recommended To Let The Pads Do The Cleaning. That Way You Won’t Have Rust On The Exposed Surfaces That Pads Don’t Touch.

    • @gkelly941
      @gkelly941 5 лет назад +1

      Rotors for older Mercedes have wear limits stamped on them, which is the thickness below which they must be replaced. I use a caliper to measure the rotor thickness.
      I don't know about the newer cars, but I don't see why anyone would change a rotor that is not worn out, unless you just want to help your mechanic put his kids through college. I would guess that the housands of deisel Mercedes taxicabs throughtout Europe do not replace rotors until the wear limits are met.

    Instead of kicking the tire to get the wheel loose, try this.
    Loosen all the bolts on the tire you are working on, while the tire is on the ground, shimmy the car by pushing on the side fender nearest the wheel you are working on, basically the wheel gets wiggled loose when you rock or shimmy the car from side to side, this is what I saw a mechanic at the deanship did to my car years ago and I put 2 & 2 together and figured out what he was doing.

      Or loosen all lugnuts.......lug studs for European vehicles. BEFORE raising tire off ground.

    • @stephencannon3140
      @stephencannon3140 5 лет назад

      Is that a “Tire Tree” in one of the lug stud holes? The “tire tree” is basically a threaded stud that takes the place of the lug studs Thread it in but only the thread holes. The flat surface allows you to hang the tires weight on the rotor hub to help with installation of the first couple of lug studs. I haven’t used them yet but sounds like a must have for DIY’ers especially when raising tire for installation. As you reinstall the remaining lug studs you can remove the tree without worrying about the tire tire not being aligned in the hub.

    • @gkelly941
      @gkelly941 5 лет назад

      Steve Cannon, every Mercedes has a threaded alignment stud in the toolkit which is used when changing a tire to line up the wheel with the threaded stud holes on the hub. I haven't actually used one yet, but there have been a few times when i wished I had....

      Remember DOT4 brake fluid and DOT3 ARE NOT Backwards compatible......This means that DOT 4 fluid will work on DOT 3 systems but DOT 3 is not compatible with DOT4 systems. The DOT4 fluid has a higher boiling point which increases protection again boil over and possibly fire.

      fear not, the pad sensors will remind you when it's time for your brake job: 40 to 70kMi
      I leave in California and drive around countless hills all the time 40KMi and 20K more to go.
      Total 60K but read this...
      I lubed my slide pins at 8k with silicon when the brakes had gone harsh after driving through a 30Miles long mountain road... MB minimal lube just had evaporated. The calipers on my new Benz were sticking instead of sliding to release... 😂
      After silicon lube my brakes have been and stayed smooth and proportional for the last 40k.
      As expected the hard pads are eating the soft OEM disks... Replacements will be Akebono ceramic pads + (Zimmerman?) rotors...

    • @gkelly941
      @gkelly941 5 лет назад

      The front brakes do most of the work, so I think you can expect 30K - 40K for front brake pads, and around 60K or more for the rear pads. The black dust on your wheels is what is left of your pads after braking wears them away. I think you will see more brake dust on your front wheels.

    • @AAHKLEE
      @AAHKLEE 2 года назад

      @@glasser2819 Pathetic is the wrong word Sir. You know not of what you speak. The stunning braking of an MB is achieved through the coefficient of friction between the sacrificial rotor and the pad material. Both designed and matched to a very large spectrum of driving habits.

Have them loosen lug studs and retighten by hand and torque wrench. Yes I am that guy who does random walk by and random in progress spot inspections.
