Had some losses myself recently and it really does punch all the creativity out of you. My threapist said to me a while back, don't wait for the mood to grip you to do something, just try and start it for 5 minutes. Easier said than done but it can work.
Also, this does make me feel I should make more effort with my dad, who just so happens to quote Monty Python and Young Frankenstein quite often - man, that bit really choked me.
I know we're not absolute besties but those DMs are genuinely always open. Feeling a tad regretful I didn't "check in" recently as I noticed (but understood) that you'd withdrawn.
Thanks dude means a lot ❤️ hope you’re managing with your losses and keeping well, and your therapist makes a perfect point (who would have thought, wisdom from therapy?) - don’t feel any regret, life is busy and full and all over the place. But do come back down to London for pints one of these days..
The fond memories of my big brother (who passed back in 2004) and my dad (who passed in 2006) would often hit me without warning; sometimes to make me laugh or smile to myself, other times to make we weep (especially when I thought about my brother… I really, really missed him a lot in the harder moments). Peaks and troughs… a journey we go through when we remember the people we love. I and my brother used to dream of starting our own animation company, but when he passed I couldn’t put pen to paper for many years. A flock of cicadas had infested our city (I was living in Maryland, USA at the time) when my brother passed, and a few days after he was gone all the cicadas left too. I remember thinking to myself: “he left us… just like the cicadas.”
I strangely also thought about Harry Potter a LOT when my brother passed. Book 3 (Azkaban) had made it to theatres right when he passed, and a year later Book 6 (Half-Blood Prince) was published. So many experiences Harry was going through on film and on paper resonated with me. I don’t know why but seeing Harry lose his own loved ones and allowing his friends (especially Luna Lovegood) to cheer him up as he grieved really meant a lot to me. It gave me the courage to go full Samwise Gamgee and just get back to living - once all the tears for the day had been shed. I also remember rewatching Kiki’s Delivery Service a few years after my brother passed and seeing Kiki’s journey in a completely new light. The encouragement of good people all around us and the energy that comes from seeing life in a fresh new perspective are a kind of magic that I find so mysterious and marvelous. Funny how stories (even fictional ones) can be so cathartic and healing, and can understand us in ways we can hardly articulate within ourselves.
