  • Back in 2002 I captured on video Marv Koenig's incredible HO scale model railroad. Marv modeled the Soo Line circa 1975 from New Richmond to Chippewa Falls Wisconsin. Most rolling stock and engines were modeled by Dave Zupan. A month after I shot this the railroad was dismantled. Marvs railroad featured a very high attention to detail as you will see in this video.

Incredible layout, incredible scenery. And, I like that the trains travel along at a good speed - and not continuously plod so slowly that one can count the number of times to wheels revolve, lol. That drives me crazy, since prototype train speeds are variable.

Now THAT! is something else as they say over here, I'm not as lucky in the square yards department, but looking it this gives me ideas that reduces the need for huge layouts. I'd still like a biggy though..

I've never understood why a railroad would paint its locomotives white...

Thankyou very much for sharing this vid. !. At the time this vid was shoot this layout must be truly amazing.
Because of what I could see on the vid, this one was a DC layout, just mine is too. I know this kind of layout was operated by blocks and it help me very much if you could answer one question about it:
I can figured out the white knob that we can see in the fascia at 13:43 is for the turnout, but beside this knob we can can see two black knobs with a 3 and a 4. I suppose these ones are for the operator's throttles but the color dots that they has around them, what are they for ?. What is the purpose ?.
I would really appreciate your comment about it, or if you don't know, some site where I can investigate about its functionallity.
Thanks in advance, and many greetings from Chile, John.

You are correct John. Marv's RR was basic DC block control. My 1977 Soo Line RR is the same. I have 4 cabs(Red, blue, green and yellow). Each block is wired to one side of a rotary switch. The blocks your train is to operate in (IE yellow) would be lined for that color(cab).

***** Thank you very much for your prompt reply Bob, I understand your explanation but I'd like a little more clarification, please.
IE at 13:43 where we can see the two black knobs, they are side by side. That is what confuse me, because if they take control of an specific Block of Tracks (which can also mean a litte module of tracks, ie an industrial yard, etc.) the logical thing would be both knobs be separated for a much longer distance.
Now, watching in more detail the vid I can see the train comes on a single track at first, but just in front of these two knobs the track is split in two by mean of a turnout and then splited again. This way, more forward we can see three tracks. So then, your explanation means each color dot could control a section of one of these three tracks independently ? or I'm wrong.
I'd really appreciate your comments and if it is more comfortable for you, could contact me at my email ( jhonny1392@gmail.com) with a litte track diagram and how it is wired to the knobs. This would be simply perfect for me !. (One drawing is better than thousand words !)
Pity, in spanish these specific topics about model railroading are never mentioned in any magazine or book. That is why I ask for your help.
Many thanks again, and I hope hearing from you very soon. Cheers, John.
