I was always 'casually' decent at the game (the kind of person that could do well against other casual players, but would get whomped by anyone who knew what they were doing) - though at the time, I had never met anyone who knew what they were doing. Then I had some games with a fellow member of the anime club, and I got to experience first hand just how insane the combo system in the game is. I had so little room to do anything, and was getting combo'd off screen. It was *nuts* to my casual brain.
What? No mention of God's Personal Anti-air, a.k.a. Cyclop's c.MK? BTW, the match where Justin ties up the score at 4-4 is a showcase of why the inclusion of SF characters in the Marvel engine was a bad idea if you were a fan of Marvel Superheroes (the game, that is; y'know, the one that came out before XSF). See, the SF characters were not designed for this crazy Marvel engine, even with vastly looser combos and higher mobility. So as a way to help compensate the SF characters, Capcom gave them all really strong, easily-comboable supers, and then drastically increased super gauge building universally. The problem with *that* is that the Marvel characters, most of whom had strong supers themselves, were *not* designed to have such frequent access to them. If you go back and look at X:COTA and MSH, even with all the crazy combos, super usage is very restrained compared to later games. So all that ended up happening is that a handful of the SF characters got stupidly good (see also: CHun-li) while the X-characters became monsters, and the game devolved into super spam and then infinites. NOw I'm a fan of the Marvel games on the whole (er, maybe not counting Infinite; I even have a soft spot for MSHvsSF since that was the first one I really played, even though it's not good), but I would have liked to have seen a proper sequel to MSH, with that same style engine (minus infinites) and more restrained gauge building. But oh well.
