- On July 7, 2014, Cindy Nguyen who was born on this Bidong Island came to visit the land of her birthplace for the very first time with her fiance, Eric Kim. Certainly a thousand bittersweet memories cherished forever .... From 1975 until 1991, the island was mostly home to Vietnamese refugee Boat People, who escaped Vietnam to flee Communists. In the late 70s, Pulau Bidong was also home to Cambodians, who tried to flee the Khmer Rouge regime, Chinese-Vietnamese, who tried to escape Vietnamese Government

GOD BLESS MALAYSIA
I was there in 1981, we have 3 people, my aunt and a friend. We escaped Vietnam by boat, about 10 days at sea, finally, got into the Malaysia mainland, the next day they brought us to the island, Pulau Bidong. We stayed there about a year, a lot of boat people at that time, everyday, people coming in, sometimes 2-3 boats a day. We stay in Zone F, near the helicopter pad. Most of the food we eat, was noodles, can soup, can of meat like goat. I didn't remembered much, I was only 10yrs.
wah, 1980 the year i was born. as a malaysian i'm proud to see this video. it show that people care about others even we came from different country.
Thank you

1980,boat#MH071, KT918, hope to reconnect you all.
Love from Tan, Australia.
Tan Tu I was arrived in April 1980 my boat was MH070A #kt 808#606
Me too, arrived 8th May 1979, boat KG0083, order of boat arrival was 396, when we left Feb 1980, there were nearly 800 boats, population got nearly 50,000 at one stage.
how they live in small island?. 50k people can't imagine.
Depending where you come from, a normal house to you may not be for other.
What you have doesn't represents what other can have.
If you think 50,000 people were a lot, you may be surprised how many people didn't made it there.
+Douglas Wong what do you mean by didn't made it?. I'm not there but i can imagine how the situation. you are there and you have a story to share with your child and grandchild in future.
A journey without a known destination, only hope with 99.999% of risk, risk of losing everything you have around you back at home, your love one, your children, brothers, sister, you name it.
The one didn't make it, got caught while trying to leave the Vietnam either by the police/army or corrupt individual/s, die on the journey in the ocean, hunger, mental, rape by Thai pirate.
My heart go to the Syrian refugees, a hope for the immediate future

I was on this island from 11/80 until 3/81. Boat number HG511 and KT964. I am hoping to reconnect with all. Thank you.
We were in Pulau Besar before the people were transferred over to Bidong Island. We saw people being transferred in small boats when the island was just started. Some of the men in Pulau Besar travelled over there everyday to get it ready. Its sad to see Pulau Besar is completely empty and barren now.
Đến và đi, đi mà không đến..những kỷ niệm buồn vui lẫn lộn. Pulau Bidong, chứng tích lịch sử đau thương của dân tộc Việt thế kỷ 20.

Hi Cindy,
Is there an independent boat tour to this island? I only see a few people on the island including some Westerners there. How did you organize the trip. I want to visit real soon. I was on this island in June, 1981 and left it in October, 1981. Please share how did you get to Bidong? Thank you.
