It was a development mess that resulted in a very flawed game, but the core that's been built is still extremely fun. It's interesting how a lot of new "mechanics" were originally bugs, things like inertia, distortion, guard flying, etc.

Warcraft's night elves were basically the same deal (unsurprising, given how much Warcraft ninjaed from Warhammer). At least up until WoW slowly morphed them into the Lorien hippie kind instead. HoMM elves also tend to be similar, particularly in 5, where they're basically angry forest Indians who also do elf shit on the side.

I recently discovered it after having wishlisted it for years and just kinda blowing it off... and it’s literally all I’ve played since then haha. Gameplay I saw of it didn’t do it justice, I’m constantly hype to try out a new nation and play style
@Scrub McSco the two I’ve been watching with great nation overviews and stuff are GeneralConfusionPlays and Attica. The first channel has better sound quality but they’ve both been immensely helpful for learning how to play in my case. You get the basic gist of the game pretty quickly and it’s very playable without a massive learning curve, and then the depth slowly starts unwinding with the magic and item/forging systems for example.
@Scrub McSco LucidTactics, Perun and General Confusion. Lucid's probably the best player of the three and has the most established community but I find him a bit dry and bland. Perun is excellent at the diplomacy aspect of the game and has a higher than average hit rate for winning games. And Confusion is, in my opinion, the most entertaining of the three however he is also the weakest which tends to make things even more entertaining. Unfortunately Confusion has been a bit burnt out on Dom5 vids recently. That said both he and Perun have playlists of completed games and I'd suggest starting with them if you want to check the game out. Also fair warning Dom5 games are LONG. The average game has between 9 and 16 players and they usually progress at the pace of a turn a day. So don't expect an episode per day for a currently active game. It's more like and episode per week with 4ish turns per episode.
That zoom at Drycha...yeah she too awakens my woods. Edit: Ghortich's in-game model was based on his kitbashed one from the Moulder White Dwarf list. Which itself was kitbashed from a Rat Ogre and several parts from other models. The right claw is in fact from the previous Ghazkull Mag Uruk Thraka model of 40K fame. So yeah, he's kinda 40K.
Rats rats we are the rats, celebrating yet another birthday bash, GELD it's your birthday today, gold and metal is on its way, and GELD you've been such a good boy this year, slaughter your foes while we all cheer
"It's possible it's a bug." So, here's the thing. Projectiles are missiles. Like, period. Magic missile spell like Fireball? That's a missile. Bombardment spell like Comet? That's a missile. Cannonballs from artillery? Missiles. Arrows? Also missiles. Due to that, missile resistance applies to things people wouldn't think it would apply to; such as ikkit's nuke, and most spells. When CA does something to change missiles, it affects everything that can be classified as a projectile due to how the game's coded. To that end... artillery and spells being affected was very much just part of the lumping. Hopefully it'll draw CA's attention to the issue, and they'll finally fix it. Edit: In regards to the lower quality unit icons, the artist who actually makes the icons quit CA, so it's a different person making them now.
True but also untrue. Everything you said is correct, except for the last part. CA actually built functionality into this update (mainly for use for modders) that allows this new effect to be tweaked on a per-projectile basis. Meaning you can have every artillery projectile not pierce trees, or have only Wood Elf projectiles pierce trees, or have only specific units projectiles pierce trees, etc. You can even tweak the timing, so maybe you want only Wood Elf arrows to just ignore trees completely, all the time. Also as far as the artist quitting, that's the first I've heard of this. That sounds like a rumor, because I haven't heard anything from CA or seen anything conrete saying they quit.
@@N3r0ThlHeavyMetal Mortal Empires wise, they look sooo much better. Having amber not be tied into researching tech, recruiting units and upgrading the Oak of ages is such a huge QoL change for them, it was really weird having to have a massive expansionist empire to support Athel Loren, espeically when any settlements outside of Athel Loren sucked. Having more "Fancy Tree" settlements around the world map means you're not stuck sitting in your forest or having to move armies turn after turn to reach the front beacause you can't recruit from anywhere else.
That last bit (the RTS vs FPS thing) reminds me of a source mod I adored in middle school. It was called Zombie Master. There were some really cool themed and original maps, and the zombie master had resources to spend on environmental traps or on zombie spawns. An example would be using extra points to summon a few "hulks" which were basically large and resilient poison zombies from HL2, or have a pipe burst, killing any player who happens to be next to it. Closest we ever got was Resident Evil: Resistance, but that had nowhere near the amount of community-created content support you need to sustain that kind of thing.
To anybody checking in on this now they reworked the Daith upgrades. Its actually a nice interface now. Not as deep as Thrott's mechanics. Its more like a watered down version of Ikit Claw but the upgrades are equipment for lords instead of for units.
Kinda disappointed that mandalore didn't know / didn't talk about how the voice of throt was a fan of the game who CA hired because of fans recommending him. Great review like always though mandalore!
Really happy you mentioned the unit cards. It's been bothering me since the Grim&Grom DLC, but it didn't get the same traction in the community after this DLC hit. I'm hoping CA will push a update.

@@itarH This is a pretty shit take. Mortal empires lets you play with all the races on one map, greatly expanding content. Its some of the best variety and fun you can find in the game. What, should all warhammer 1 content just be stuck in warhammer 1 and the only map we have is the Vortex? If none of the warhammer 1 races were represented everyone would be bitching that it was an abandoned game, and that warhammer 2 should've been an expansion to warhammer 1.
@@itarH Which was the plan from the beginning and an awesome plan. What a weird complaint. It's the ultimate Warhammer Fantasy game spread across three games. They didn't expect the first game to be so successful which is why the quality of WH1 DLC and original factions pales in comparison to the newer stuff. Updating the Old World is what they need to do. It keeps the game fresh for old and newer players and creates opportunities for more DLC, which has been pretty much all excellent with WH2.
Excellent review. Funny how the skaven have 3 dlc and every time they wound up being the showcase faction. CA really making dlc unit cards look like squig shit tho
On reddit, Grace confirmed that they would fix the unit card for T&T and W&P. Also, the forge of Daith will be improved. CA is really listening to the fans
"The chaos invasion can be turned off" THANK GOD Those are so tedious, it's the main reason I took a break from the game. Nothing like 4 stacks of end-game units spawning in, while most of my armies are on the other side of my country, and rofl stomping my garrisons in the 5 turns it takes to get my armies over there.
those Forest encounters/dilemmas sound really cool and fun to go through I'm surprised i haven't heard anyone else talking about it. I would love to see even more of these kinds of things as the game goes on and doing stuff like making world events a bit more interactive.
6:59 So the hippie elves learned the secrets of STEEL REHN then Going by the rules of the new (and frankly horrible) Warhammer meta-setting, this is probably canon
Another great review. I've been looking forward to this new DLC but still annoyed Skaven get yet another new lord when the Beastmen have been so woefully neglected, surely the best opponent for the Wood Elves would be a Beastie. I get that they probably want to do a full re-work on the beasts before a new lord though, so I guess giant mutated rat ogres will do for now. Can't say no to giant McStabby Stab Rats.
Very glad to see an actually honest review of the Sisters' mechanic. Some other RUclipsrs who shall not be named gave me hope that maybe their mechanic wasn't as bad as we initially thought it was, but between seeing all of the items fully upgraded in another video and Mandalore's candid opinion I think it's safe to say that the Wood Elves got well and truly shafted on the mechanics front. Why CA can't seem to make a balanced DLC and why they always consistently favor the Skaven when they're a part of it are questions I'd like the answer to but will likely never know. I officially only trust Mandalore when it comes to reviewing content for Total War Warhammer. None of the other content creators can be trusted because they're all too reliant on CA for their content.
I don't want to be ungrateful to CA, because generally that quality of the DLC is really high, but god do I wish they'd stop picing favourites with their factions, there has been so much content for Skaven, but Chaos and Beastmen have had almost nothing since their launch. Its just become a fact that if you want to play hordes you can go right to hell for all CA cares.
This is not quality content in my opinion they add a few character models, made dragon ogres available to wood elves and colored some trees, not attacking just wanna know if I am wrong
They are saving the Chaos overhaul for game 3. Current plan is to bring all races to the standard of game 2, which means the next (and last) DLC will most likely be Dwarfs and Beastmen.
It might seem small to others but I really do love how they are expanding the map like this. compared to when i first played mortal empires and to now it feels so much better and just being able to go past the mountains is just so cool
5:51 I love these encounters cause it means more battles without having to go to war with powerful neighbors. And this is how the Vortex events should be instead of armies spawning in the middle or your territory. I hope this encounters thing gets implemented more into random encounters or even the narrative campaign for TWW3 It would be awesome for Beastmen to get something it that with ambushing a traveling Empire caravan or other things like that.
I mean I’m honestly fine with the Skaven getting this DLC simply because not every race have equally sized rosters, and Skaven in Particular have a really large diverse roster. With this DLC I say Skaven are pretty much done as a race, maybe add Thanquol and Stormfiends at some point during Game 3 but they’re pretty much done, the roster is complete and we don’t have to worry about them anymore, Chaos and the Empire are new factions that really need the Skaven Treatment.
Great Video Mando, as someone who has been a huge fan of this game for a while now and have a special fondness for Warhammer fantasy I really love your series of videos on TWW2, It's been just the right amount of in depth explanation and concise information. It's nice seeing how much new people you've shown all the cool things this game can offer and the appreciation you show for the developers even when the game has its fair share of issues. I hope you get a good dose of those condensed Holiday vibe this December.
Man I'd love to see an RTS vs FPS game reviewed. I always thought Battlefield's commander mechanic was cool, but asymmetric ideas are even cooler. I wonder if it's possible to get that Korean game working somehow.
Your name and picture remind me of the knight from The Belgariad by David Eddings. A knight of Arendia named Mandorallen. Aside from that, I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your videos! Thanks for all the amazing content!
Of all the things you talked about in the video, unit cards was perhaps the one I agreed the most with. They 'really' are quite bothersome. And they have no personality. I know some other people have brought attention to it, but I'm glad you talked about it as well, Mandalore. Hopefully CA can either go back and change them or at the very least not repeat this again.
That Battleswarm: Field of honor question reminded me how much I miss playing Natural Selection 2. Always loved discovering those genre mash-up PvP games.
Where's Sseth? Where do you lock him up? xD Ghoritch's voice reminds me of Gorgutz from 40k. I don't know why I'm watching 26 minutes of Total Warhammer 2 when I'm not even playing that game. But Mandalore's review is entertaining as always FPS players vs. RTS players, that sounds like a really dope game
It’s so much fun man. I didn’t have any desire the first time I saw gameplay really but got bored and saw it on Xbox game pass and tried it and I’m glad I didn’t miss out on this

Elder Scrolls Bosmer (wood elves) are also not like your typical wood elves. In TES they are carnivores and even cannibalistic.
@@Killeraholic i dunno im not like a master of elder scrolls lore but its wood elves are still pretty basic, the cannibalism is certainty unique but the race as a whole is fairly standard

I think that would do wonders for that under appreciated gem

So, here's the thing.
Damn bro, that sucks he quit! I hope they find someone like him with a love for the game & someone good at drawing perspective pieces!
@@whitephillip6997 Likewise, the art style is a bit offputtingly different.
there actually is a seprate missle resist for arty, the slanns missile resist doesn't protect from cannonballs

@@itarH This is a pretty shit take. Mortal empires lets you play with all the races on one map, greatly expanding content. Its some of the best variety and fun you can find in the game.
What, should all warhammer 1 content just be stuck in warhammer 1 and the only map we have is the Vortex?

@@itarH Which was the plan from the beginning and an awesome plan. What a weird complaint. It's the ultimate Warhammer Fantasy game spread across three games. They didn't expect the first game to be so successful which is why the quality of WH1 DLC and original factions pales in comparison to the newer stuff. Updating the Old World is what they need to do. It keeps the game fresh for old and newer players and creates opportunities for more DLC, which has been pretty much all excellent with WH2.

I love these encounters cause it means more battles without having to go to war with powerful neighbors.
And this is how the Vortex events should be instead of armies spawning in the middle or your territory.
