@@DKMediaMusic yeah I still think Clockwork Angels is good but I just love their 9 album run from the debut to Signals and nothing else can break in to that top 9 for me. I prefer when Geddy Lee sings up higher like the old stuff. He started singing lower later. And I prefer the wilder proggy compositions with time signature changes and long epics rather than the later more straightforward alternative pop/hard rock song structures.
While I obviously disagree with some things, like the placement of Clockwork, Hold Your Fire, Rush, and Caress, overall this is a very solid list and I agree with a lot of points you made. Yes, La Villa is 100000% the best instrumental from them and probably the best ever by anyone, just based simply off musicianship. Also I hadn't thought about it until you mentioned it, but yes, Freewill is probably the weakest song on Permanent Waves in my opinion, as well. I'm not a purist 70's only rush fan; I really enjoy their synth period. Hearing you praise Power Windows and Mystic Rhythms in particular made me happy. My top 10 FAVORITE albums from them would be 1. Farewell to Kings 2. Signals 3. Hemispheres 4. Moving Pictures 5. Power Windows 6. Permanent Waves 7. Fly By Night 8. 2112 9. Caress Of Steel 10. Hold Your Fire But of course it always varies, especially in the 6-10 range. Overall very solid list.
I tend to agree with you about “Freewill”. Although an outstanding song instrumentally, it’s the “Shook Me All Night Long” off of ACDC’s “Back In Black”.
Can't imagine anyone having "Clockwork Angels" as #1! As good as it is, not sure that it would even crack my top ten. Saw Rush on the "Power Windows" tour, that along with "Caress of Steel" are the most underrated.

@@kaijukebox of course man! Love seeing other Rush fans anywhere. I can’t praise Signals enough. In my opinion there isn’t a bad song on there. I feel like picking my favorite on there would be really difficult, but I think I’d have to say Subdivisions and Losing It resonate with me the most. But seriously every song on there is an 8/10 or above for me. Cheers!

I mean it’s your opinion, but I love Rivendell off of their Fly by Night album. Peart’s lyrics are hauntingly beautiful, Lifeson’s guitar is very tranquil and Lee’s vocals are very mystically serene. It’s honestly the best Lord of the Rings song made from a band, including the three made by Led Zeppelin. But again this is just my opinion. As for Freewill, I absolutely love it but I can understand why it is overrated. It does seem too formulaic for it to stand out to superiors like Spirit of the Radio, but I still love it.
Reason (I would speculate) that they didn't play any Power Windows on R40 is because the first half of the previous tour Clockwork Angels was pretty much Power Windows.

@@calico_shard1153 yeah I love the raw, edginess of Vapor Trails. Songs like Stars Look Down, Ceiling Unlimited, Freeze, Nocturne, are just flat out rockers that makes my teeth rattle when I listen to them. There was an entire decade from 1979 until 1989 where I didn't listen to almost any music except Rush. I agree completely, apart from I'd swap your pick of Hemispheres for A Farewell To Kings and I have only listened to Clockwork Angels one time and didn't like it. I kinda lost the plot with Rush after Neil came back from the brink and they'd changed so much I couldn't get into it anymore.
Agree with most of you rankings except for Rush and Clockwork Angels. Both way lower in my book. Gotta stick up for Kid Gloves and In the End as well. R40 was a lot of fun to see and you kind of knew it was their last hurrah. But I will always remember my first Rush concert during the Power Windows tour in the mid 80s.. Saved up for killer seats in the lower loge which I believe were $60. Good times.
Well you already heard how much I like Power Windows, still very upset I didn't get any songs live. I only saw them twice once R40 the other was the Clockwork show which is still my favorite live experience ever. I dont remember if I mentioned that or not but yeah it was pretty awesome
They covered tons of Power Windows songs (The Big Money, Grand Designs, Middletown Dreams, Territories, Manhattan Project) on the Clockwork Angels tour so they decided to skip it on R40. My favorite set list of all the shows I got to see from 04-15. BU2B was my fav at the time too, glad i got to see it on the Time Machine tour 3 times. Btw Have you heard the Power Windows demo tape?
Yes they did and of course I was very new to them when I saw that tour so I wasnt even familiar with the songs when they played them. This has happened at several concerts where a band would play a lot of what would later become one of my favorite albums but I didnt know it at the time. And no havent heard it
1. 2112 (1976) 2. Moving Pictures (1981) 3. Permanent Waves (1980) 4. Hemispheres (1978) 5. Grace Under Pressure (1984) 6. Fly By Night (1975) 7. Signals (1982) 8. Power Windows (1985) 9. Snakes and Arrows (2007) 17. Hold Your Fire (1987) 18. Presto (1989) 19. Vapor Trails (2002)
View number 1000 nice, also Hold your fire is way too low. But Tai Shan is indeed the worst Rush song I feel lol. Prime Mover, Mission, Open Secrets and Turn the Page are my favs on it
Ay thanks for hitting that milestone. But anyway anything I put on the bottom people would be like "thats way too low" cause these albums are just that good.
the reason they didnt play any power windows song in their r40 tour, its because they play plenty of it in their Clockwork angels tour, arguably their best tour and that was one of the reasons in my opinion
So was Clockwork Angels your only Rush concert and has some bias to your opinion? You seem young. I did Moving Pictures and Signals tour but neither one is still my number one album. I like some Clockwork, but I’d only put it half way up my list. Frankly Peart’s better than most drummers at this age but you could feel some of the age in this album and Getty’s voice is in decline. That said the writing was very good. It was a great swan song. IMO Permanent Waves is the 💎. Flawless.
When he was saying that some of the fake fans would be disappointed by the best musical song and he said you'll be surprised by the best one I immediately thought of yyz or la villa strangiato
Im not gonna rank them all, but here’s my top 7. 1. Clockwork Angels 2. Moving Pictures 3. Hemispheres 4. Signals 5. Permanent Waves 6. 2112 7. Snakes and Arrows
@@DKMediaMusic For me, its the most “perfect” record they made. Every track is good, the flow is great, it has some of Neil’s best lyrics, and it showcases their versatility, ranging from Prog, to hard rock, to Pop, and beautiful ballads.
They placed the song 'Roll the Bones' straight after 'Free Will' on Different Stages. 'RtB' can be seen as a kind of 'maybe not...' to the ideas of the earlier song. Was Neil Pearl the only rock lyricist who ever had such an argument with himself? Spoiler alert: very probably yes.
Nice video ! Here's my list: 1. Presto - LOVE every track (War Paint my fave); R. Hine did great bringing out their best 2. Hold Your Fire - this one really drew me in and made me a FAN (esp Turn the Page) 3. Permanent Waves - A+ on every track, same as Presto; packs great punch (short/superb) 4. Power Windows - discovered this one later, but just as strong/complements HYF 5. Roll the Bones - my 1st love (live tour)/sentimental; title track ok but love all the rest 6. Grace Under Pressure - my 2nd; solid encapsulation of "angst"; helped get me thru school 7. 2112 - Rush's most "important" album, launching 3 classics in a row 8. Fly By Night - drew me in; love By-Tor/S Dog; nice transition to signature "70s" sound 9. A Farewell to Kings - also helped "draw me in" early on 10. Rush - the "fun" one; they started off strong; would still own even if it were their only 11. Hemispheres - nice "bookend" to 70s; if #10 is light this one is a full, satisfying meal 12. Moving Pictures - not the be-all-end all for me; LOVE 1/2 of it - the rest "ok" 13. Vapor Trails - my "go to" on most days; a return to "Rush" sound I love after T4E 14. Signals - nice tr'sn to 80s albums I like better; less "punch" than MP but more good songs 15. Snakes & Arrows - my tastes skew twd "later" Rush; like MOST of the tracks on this one 16. Counterparts - experimental; like about 1/2; great when I am in the mood for it 17. Caress of Steel - Panacea nearly ruins FofL, an o.w. great song; B Day is infectious 18. Clockwork Angels - like the textures/arrgmts but only a handful appeal to me 19. Test for Echo - awkward compositions, some dumb lyrics; felt like a re-do of CP/80s stuff Don't think that I dislike Clockwork Angels just because it's near the bottom. There's just so much great material on all their albums that I had to go with what was most sentimental to me. Even though your list is different, you seem to love the band as much as I do. One thing I love about Rush (aside from their taking risks and creating a different "sound/feel" for each album) is how the song quality is consistently _strong_ on every album (i.e. no "filler"). The only Rush album that ever disappointed me was Test for Echo, but I still listen to that one frequently. I agree with you, THANK GOD that wasn't their last album ! I have to disagree slightly on what you considered "weaker" songs, being Kid Gloves, Red Lenses, and Digital Man. I agree that Something for Nothing & La Villa Strangiato are classics. Thanks again for including song clips and humor in your video : )
And the award for best comment I ever got goes to...you got quite the mix of classic and modern eras of the band all over the place which is really cool. Pretty surprising to see Presto at 1 and when I say "weaker" songs its like just kinda ok songs. Not that theyre bad I dont think any of their songs are bad but just overshadowed by other great songs on the album.
@@DKMediaMusic Thanks ! Yeah, I love all the eras : ) Presto just has such a _unique_ sound and it was one of the last albums I bought when I was building my Rush collection in the '91-'94 period, so I was already a fan, and every track is flawless to my ears. I can listen to the whole thing or just any random track that is going through my head. But I play whatever album suits my mood at the time - whether it's 2112 or the debut or Vapor Trails or HYF or whatever, it's all good to me.
Impossible to rank them for me ….. each day I hear them differently and the songs affect me based on what I’m feeling but my least favorite is… ummm … I can’t pick any lol 😂
I have never understood why people rank albums or rave about this or that album. Songs, that's what it's all about. I didn't agree with "I'm a fan of this album" or "I'm a fan of this band". THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS INDIVIDUAL SONGS. PERIOD.
Um...no. Not even in the slightest. It sounds like you're one of those that listens to the greatest hits albums and thats it so you're in the wrong place my friend.
@@DKMediaMusic Well so do you! You said you only ever listen to Driven and Test for Echo on that album! Isn't that the same? Gimme a break, man... Btw, those are also the 2 songs I love from that album, so we have good taste, ha ha 😎

Disagree a lot- the best is Hemispheres, presto, Snakes and Arrows, Moving Pictures, A farewell to kings. Worst is Caress of steel, the last album, grace under pressure.
@@DKMediaMusic I was blessed to have lived their evolution. And to have seen them 4 times in concert. For me , their 7 best works were the span of caress of steel through signals. The grace under pressure tour was one I went to. But at that point I felt their best work was behind them. We all have our favorites. None the less I feel that no other band is as great except for Black Sabbath.

@@DKMediaMusic - To be fair, I love pretty much all of Rush's records, and don't think any of them are really bad. Clockwork is just the album I've spent the least amount of time with as opposed to the rest of the discography!
ok, it's an opinion. but this was the last video I watched (yes, genesis) and even thru those I was like, yeahhhhhhh *NO*! got here, my eyes rolled out my head and across the floor. just based on your reasoning for why you made the choices, I know wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too many people that would not be as kind. like I said, opinion but much like other body parts............. in short, pass on all of this
Having ANY Rush fan ranking their albums is pointless. Each one would be different. Anyone that listened almost exclusively to Metallica (overrated!) for four years is to be trusted?? Its not a very popular opinion lol.
My top 10 FAVORITE albums from them would be

4. Moving Pictures

Yeah man it could vary really easily. That top 5 was just hell to figure out.
power windows, crap. signals, crap. hold your fire, crap.

You stated you loved Trivium. You'll love Soilwork. Thanks
Reason (I would speculate) that they didn't play any Power Windows on R40 is because the first half of the previous tour Clockwork Angels was pretty much Power Windows.
The Necromancer had one of my favorite baselines in it at 5 minutes and 30 seconds into the song.

you're kidding me right? vapor trails ahead of farewell? ahead of XANADU and CLOSER TO THE HEART and CYGNUS X-1? and CINDERELLA MAN? are you telling me one little victory and freeze and vapor trail are better then the album that took their careers by storm
@@calico_shard1153 yeah I love the raw, edginess of Vapor Trails. Songs like Stars Look Down, Ceiling Unlimited, Freeze, Nocturne, are just flat out rockers that makes my teeth rattle when I listen to them. Don't get me wrong, Xanadu and Cygnus are two all time greats but as a collection of songs from top to bottom, I think VT is the better album.

In The End is a good song to practice to get your fingers used to long stretch chords. Bb is a killer.
Lifeson was always a madman on the guitar

I could never make this list. Impossible except maybe putting Hold Your Fire at #19
the reason they didnt play any power windows song in their r40 tour, its because they play plenty of it in their Clockwork angels tour, arguably their best tour and that was one of the reasons in my opinion
Permanent Waves
Best Rush album of them all!
Flawless.
1. Signals
2. Grace under Pressure
When he was saying that some of the fake fans would be disappointed by the best musical song and he said you'll be surprised by the best one I immediately thought of yyz or la villa strangiato
Hold up why do Xanadu and Cygnus X-1 bring down A Farewell to Kings? Those tracks are sick
No no they bring it up to 7. If those 2 songs werent on there it would be much lower
Im not gonna rank them all, but here’s my top 7.

5. Permanent Waves
6. 2112
7. Snakes and Arrows
HELL YEAH! I honestly can't believe how many other people have Clockwork really high, let alone number one. Awesome man!
@@DKMediaMusic For me, its the most “perfect” record they made. Every track is good, the flow is great, it has some of Neil’s best lyrics, and it showcases their versatility, ranging from Prog, to hard rock, to Pop, and beautiful ballads.
@@TheAlibabatree Couldnt agree more, its like half the music, and half the experience is what really defines it as my favorite.
Feedback??? I listen to it all the time.
Clockwork Angels#1 over Moving Pictures?WOW.Just WOW.
Yeah Im extremely biased over here

Nice video ! Here's my list:
1. Presto - LOVE every track (War Paint my fave); R. Hine did great bringing out their best
2. Hold Your Fire - this one really drew me in and made me a FAN (esp Turn the Page)
3. Permanent Waves - A+ on every track, same as Presto; packs great punch (short/superb)
4. Power Windows - discovered this one later, but just as strong/complements HYF
5. Roll the Bones - my 1st love (live tour)/sentimental; title track ok but love all the rest
6. Grace Under Pressure - my 2nd; solid encapsulation of "angst"; helped get me thru school
7. 2112 - Rush's most "important" album, launching 3 classics in a row
8. Fly By Night - drew me in; love By-Tor/S Dog; nice transition to signature "70s" sound
9. A Farewell to Kings - also helped "draw me in" early on
10. Rush - the "fun" one; they started off strong; would still own even if it were their only
11. Hemispheres - nice "bookend" to 70s; if #10 is light this one is a full, satisfying meal
12. Moving Pictures - not the be-all-end all for me; LOVE 1/2 of it - the rest "ok"
13. Vapor Trails - my "go to" on most days; a return to "Rush" sound I love after T4E
14. Signals - nice tr'sn to 80s albums I like better; less "punch" than MP but more good songs
15. Snakes & Arrows - my tastes skew twd "later" Rush; like MOST of the tracks on this one
16. Counterparts - experimental; like about 1/2; great when I am in the mood for it
17. Caress of Steel - Panacea nearly ruins FofL, an o.w. great song; B Day is infectious
18. Clockwork Angels - like the textures/arrgmts but only a handful appeal to me
19. Test for Echo - awkward compositions, some dumb lyrics; felt like a re-do of CP/80s stuff
Don't think that I dislike Clockwork Angels just because it's near the bottom. There's just so much great material on all their albums that I had to go with what was most sentimental to me.
Even though your list is different, you seem to love the band as much as I do. One thing I love about Rush (aside from their taking risks and creating a different "sound/feel" for each album)
is how the song quality is consistently _strong_ on every album (i.e. no "filler").
But I play whatever album suits my mood at the time - whether it's 2112 or the debut or Vapor Trails or HYF or whatever, it's all good to me.

i think Limbo alone shoulda put TFE a few places higher that shit rocks
I have never understood why people rank albums or rave about this or that album. Songs, that's what it's all about. I didn't agree with "I'm a fan of this album" or "I'm a fan of this band". THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS INDIVIDUAL SONGS. PERIOD.
Um...no. Not even in the slightest. It sounds like you're one of those that listens to the greatest hits albums and thats it so you're in the wrong place my friend.
