  • Written by Irish poet Dominic Behan, the brother of legendary playwright Brendan Behan, this bitter reflection on the ongoing partition of Ireland and the IRA's often violent attempts at reunification was brought to the U.S. in the late 1950s by The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. It has been recorded by dozens of folk singers on both sides of the Atlantic, including The Dubliners, Luke Kelly solo, the Wofhounds, Judy Collins, and many more.
The lyrics commemorate the deaths on New Year's Eve of 1956 of two very young soldiers of the IRA, Fergal O'Hanlon and Sean South, who were killed while trying to blow up a barracks of the Royal Ulster Constabulary in County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland.
The Kingston Trio here is using the same lyrics as the Clancys - lyrics that elide Behan's verses about James Connolly being executed by the British while strapped to a wooden chair because he was too wounded to stand, as well as a justification for killing policemen and an indictment of the first president of the Republic of Ireland Eamon de Valera's acceptance of the division of the island nation in 1922.
Every other version of this song uploaded to RUclips has ignited flaming and partisan commentary about the song and the ongoing troubles that inspired it. As much as it is an Irish Nationalist anthem, Behan's composition also remains implicitly a powerful lamentation over the sorrow and tragic cost of war and violence.

Boy am I glad to finally see this great song on here. I recall my brother, who was killed in a car crash later, had this album and I loved everything on it. He also had the Hungry I album. My family came from Ireland in the early 1700's and fought the British in 1776 and again in 1812. I have no fight with the British now but I understand the Irish anger. Thanks for the post.

Just finished Clancy's The Patriot Game, and the song is referred to. Gave me a better understanding of the Irish side of the Troubles.

One of the best trio's albums. Got this album when I was a kid - music was great, but really loved (wanted) that guitar with the big pick guard.

If you like special pickguards, try and find the cover of the Brothers four album MORE BIG FOLK HITS. John Paine 's got a little smaller one.on his Martin.

Love the style of this version. The reverbed, haunted vocals give it great theatre. Something of a nod to Johnny Cash, too...?

Is this where Bob Dylan got the melody for "With God On Our SIde"?

As I don't believe he credited KT on that song, I do believe it is straight theft (same subject matter too, just different lyrics). Bands like Zep and others never get a pass, for lesser infractions. But apparently being a legendary poet of a generation gives you musical and copyright sainthood

There are 2 versions to this song by the Kingston .One start with the spoken verse by John Stewart at the very beginning of the song and the other doesn't.Both versions are great.

Come all you young rebels and list while we sing for the love of one's country is a terrible thing.
It banishes fear with the speed of a flame and it makes us all part of the patriot game.
    My name is O'
Hannon and I've just gone sixteen.
My home is in Monaghan where I was weaned.
I've learned all my life cruel England's to blame and so I'm a part of the patriot game.
This Ireland of ours has for long been half-free.
Six counties are under John Bull's tyranny.
So, we gave up our boyhood to drill and to train and play our own part in the patriot game.
It's barely two years since they wandered away and it was with the local battalion of the bold IRA
For they'd read of our heroes and they wanted the same to play their own part in the patriot game.
And now as I lie here, my body all holes, I think of those traitors who bargained in souls.
I wish that my rifle had given the same to those Quislings who sold out the patriot game.

The Melody of "With God on your Side" by Bob Dylan sounds quite the same. Did good old bob steal a little bit?

Bringing back the last six counties to the nation of Ireland is not forgotten. It is just a matter of time until the Brits move back to the mainland and leave another nation alone.

@despuis I would not argue that some atrocities were commited during the troubles, but as for British occupation most of the people in Norther Ireland consider themselves to be U.K citizens. The Republicans but they form a minority. Neither would I seek to condone some of the actions carried out by the Army and the RUC. There is clear evidence however that the IRA took Gadaffis blood money, which was not then used by brave men. Planting indescriminate bombs is cowardly not brave.

@despuis rights and a better NI/UK for catholics. which could (hypothetically, i am not saying that violence against the british state wasnt justified in some cases) be achieved through peaceful means. US civil rights battle at the same time man!!!
the IRA became an organisation that could only exist in a self fulfillng prophecy of sectarian hatred. Northern ireland, for better or worse, could never be part of ireland because there is jus too many proddys there. its unworkable. have a..

@despuis referendum, see what the people of northern ireland vote for. im done with you now, typed enough. blind reactionary hatred of britain and love of the IRA doesnt make anything better and never will. stop harking back to the days and look to the future. for all you know throughout this whole time, i could very well be irish.
