I'm not even a black American, I'm an African from Kenya, but everything about this video is relatable! Like the personalities and body types of the hair dressers, the customers, the long line of women waiting to get their hair done. Ahh, I love this!
well the obsession with straight hair is a worldwide epidemic, so i am not surprised. My family is from uganda and i was disappointed when i went, to see the same craziness with weaves and relaxers. It is sad.
Felicity Martinez It's not really a fascination with white hair. It's a question of manageability and protective styling. The perspective of most African people has changed from that colonial mindset when it comes to beauty. I'm also from Kenya and I got my hair relaxed when I was in highschool, because being in a boarding school and really not being keen on styling my hair for 30 min every morning, it was more manageable. Now I'm in University and I can manage my time better and I'm currently rocking my natural short hair like many of my peers. Not once did I ever look at my European friends with envy. It's just hair! Each has its perks and struggles. If you ask most milenials you'll probably get the same answer.
+simply.s In LOS ANGELES they don't like to do real hair. WEAVES make the most money. Most of them want to CUT your hair and put a weave on that you have to have treated WEEKLY. Hair is like majorly important.
This was actually really fascinating; felt like a glimpse into this secret world concerning black culture. I never knew many black women took their hair so seriously! It's a real point of pride for them. Please do more of these!
They don't take "their" hair seriously..they take "weave" seriously, after not taking care of their "real" hair...and fucked it up! Hence the weave! And Chinese own 99% of black beauty supplies distribution!
Its funny how people call these women "ratchet" yet the many women in Hollywood (who go through the very SAME transformation) are something to be praised. Double standards are amazing.
BomptonMadeMeDoIt Lol, they don't " rip out their hair" they put them in braids underneath. These woman do this treatment mostly if their hair is damaged or simply if they fucking want too.
This video actually makes me feel the opposite. It makes me not proud to be black because black women invest too much money into their hair; hair that isn't even theirs.
I'm a european guy dating a black girl for a year now. Aesthetics wise, hair specifically, I am in love with the natural look. Curly and wild with a personal twist. If a black woman likes straight hair go for it, all I'm saying is that going natural is absolutely gorgeous too. To me personally far more than over-simplified straight hair.
+Dominus Vasilev I have natural hair, and can make it straight without heat natural hair is very versatile, I"m a hair consultant for all hair types....all hair is beautiful people just gotta love what they have LOL!!
This was fun to watch. Felt like I was in the hair store with my own aunties n them. It's just so fun, when you actually sit down and see how much we all have in common as black women. No, not everybody has this experience, and not everybody cares about their hair as much, but it's still an experience that many other black women have. It's fun to sit down and realize that though we come from different hoods, suburbs, wards, cities, and towns, there's still this one thing that we have in common.
I'm black and like a lot of the other black people commenting I don't wear my hair this way. Not the look that I typically go for but this was still great to see. I don't understand why people are so upset, why would you expect a 7 min video on beauty in a specific hair salon in south central to represent all black people? Black people aren't a monolithic group but that doesn't mean you can't highlight specific subcultures and cultures within the black community. Some black women wear weaves, get perms, and straighten their hair. Some black women wear braids, afros, and locs. Some black women switch between several styles. Solange for example is always mixing it up. You're telling me she loves herself one week when she's wearing her natural fro, is a self-hating ratchet the next week with a straight weave, and has mixed feelings towards herself the following month when she rocks a kinky wig? It's not that deep. It's hair, it's supposed to be fun. Chill out. You can praise women who wear their natural hair without bashing women who wear a weave or perm. Many times, depending on the time of year it's the same woman who has rocked both.
But these young girls are losing their hair and weaves have become like a drug to them and they must have it. Do you remember the video of the young girl holding her baby over her herd in the rain so her weave would not get wet? If you do a thing because you enjoy it then fine but if you must do a thing because everyone is doing and spend money you don't have to do it then you are in trouble. If it damages your real hair to the point you have to shave or to the point it will never grow back again then something is wrong with the mind set and someone is making money off you to your own hurt. Something is wrong when your kids are in rags and hungry but you have a $300 weave. It's the new ghetto drug and I don't know who told them they needed it so badly. Something wrong with self mutilation when it comes to your hair being slowly pulled out of your head and only washing your hair every 3 months with all that mold growing under that weave. But China and India are making millions off black women and maybe having a good laugh. I see tons of young girls God bless them with very little to no hair on the sides of their heads as if they were 90 year old women but they are not yet 18. Has to stop. I pay $30 to get my hair trimmed and styled and its my hair and my hairstylist is great and use to fly out over the US to do peoples hair until it became too much travel so he is one of the best and I always look great. I don't have kids to take care of but I'm still not spending $200 to $300 with some going as much as thousands for a hairstyle when you can just eat right and keep it clean and do wonders with your real hair for less.Who starts all this nonsense in the black areas anyway?
I used to look down on weaves, because I used to think they were dirty and fake. After seeing how happy weaves make these women, I sort of have a new perspective. I still think they're better ways to style hair with its natural texture, but if it makes these women feel flawless. Who are we to judge?
Same. I do think they would all be more beautiful with curls and kinks, but this is what they want and the community that forms around it strengthens them.

This is beautiful. Like seriously this is culture, beauty the value of beauty is so important in every woman you can have zero in your bank account but atleast your pretty and your hair is done. And with that you can improve your life, beauty is not just apperance its a feeling.
Ugh this NEEDS more views. This video could show some people a glimpse into why hair is more important to black people than it is to most other races. It is a big part of black identity which is why it's not ok to just carelessly appropriate their hair styles into euro centric culture (corn rows, gelled baby bangs).
MAN! This brought back memories of sitting in the shop all day with my sisters and just soaking in the atmosphere. I used to LOVE getting my hair done. Since going natural, I hit a salon once, maybe twice, a year for a trim but I kinda miss the sisterhood.

I haven't dated a non-black woman since 2000. Without a doubt the hardest part about an interracial relationship to me is convincing my woman to wear her hair natural. Everything after that is easy to me (because at the end of the day I have both male and white privilege going for me) but natural hair is a freaking battle, I swear.

@@beingkltd Youre gullible. Theirs a reason people call straight hair, "good hair"
Congrats to i-D for doing this. The salon experience is something every black female around the world can relate to.
Naa.... My woman never put another woman's hair in her head at all... Hair down to her back and it's hers. Yuck!
876ThePepperMan876 Going to a salon doesn't always include getting a weave. I've never had a weave done at a salon

No they are ratchet too. I see no different between these women and Kim K when it comes to the over the top beauty standard with the weave and makeup
These women are trying to feel their best and be their best. They invest in themselves and it’s something we can all appreciate. ♥️
