Vonnegut actually agreeing to do this cameo is absolutely on-brand for his sense of humor. I love it! It's only two sentences, but he absolutely steals the scene (and you certainly remember it). Fun Fact: This was based on a real incident where Vonnegut helped his nephew write a paper on one of his books; the boy ended up getting a "D." :p So it goes!
Growing up on this movie is the reason I started reading Vonnegut when I got a little older. I was like, well he was cool enough to be in Back To School so I doubt his books are boring and stuffy so I'll give him a shot. I started with Slaughterhouse 5 and it was amazing so I read more. But if it weren't for this movie I wouldn't have known him from any other author and might not have even given his books a second glance.
He should have gotten Vonnegut to visit the class. There's a story that Isaac Asimov told that's a bit similar where he was visiting a friend at a university and found out there was lecture about his books going on that day. He decided to sneak into the lecture and naturally the teacher was getting all sorts of things wrong up to the point where Asimov had enough, announced himself and set things straight in front of the class.
I love when Ms. Kellerman, after learning that Thorton hired others to do his work for him, tells Thorton over the paper he had Vonnegut write "whoever wrote this paper..doesn't know the first thing about Vonnegut" I've wondered if that means that either Ms. Kellerman herself still doesn't know everything about Vonnegut, or that Vonnegut himself didn't write about his real works in Thorton's paper.
Really, Kurt Vonnegut making a cameo… so good. It makes me want to go back to school…. See the strings… cats cradle…. It’s fun y’all. It’s amazing how decent and effective interest based learning… can uplfit. The science of positive reinforcement and neurodiversity… lots of ripples so to speak.
Diane still gave Thornton an "F" telling him that she won't accept work that was obviously written by someone else.... who, in her opinion, doesn't know the first thing about Kurt Vonnegut. LOL! XD She didn't even know that Kurt Vonnegut himself wrote the paper!
I love how the movie goes from jokes about Kurt Vonnegut to jokes about seeing boobs in the shower. It's one of the best comedies of the 80s and a real feelgood film too.
Recently saw this movie with some family members. It was surprisingly good. I expected some trashy film with over-the-top sequences and absurd characters but what I got was a great film with over-the-top sequences and absurd characters.
Classic scene! And when his professor calls him out on saying “whoever wrote this doesn’t know the first thing about Kurt Vonnegut,” just shows how ignorant Academia is.
Yeah, if Kurt himself wrote the paper wrong according to Diane, then Diane has gained inaccurate info on Kurt. If she got the info she knows out of books, then it's the author of the books who got inaccurate info on Kurt. One other possibility is that Kurt deliberately wrote down incorrect info about himself on the report Thorton turned in, except, why would he do that? Maybe because he wanted to teach Thornton a lesson on that it's wrong to get someone else to do your schoolwork for you? That idea's a bit far fetched, but it's possible
Keith Gordon, the actor playing Melon's son that opens the door to Kurt Vonnegut, would later direct the movie "Mother Night," an adaptation of one of Vonnegut's novels.
Brendan McCabe Most folks work and have things to do. With that being said, at least he had a sense of humor about it. Too many stiffs where I reside. 😞 Peace ✌
My favorite scene in the movie is the diving scene...I love how he checks the air for wind and then does a bullshit made up dive called the “Triple Lindy.” Lmao 😆
this movie was a decent movie when it came out.... but most knew that if a rich kid was in college.. he had babes crawling all over him..Because even back then women were about what a man could give her and not the quality of the soul in the man.

@@BrownSugar-bu3nf Slaughterhouse 5 was my first book i read from Kurt Vonnegut and it was one of the required summer readings, loved it.
I love how, later in the movie, Thorton is told by the teacher that whoever wrote that paper doesn't know the first thing about Vonnegut.
"Whoever wrote this paper doesn't know the first thing about Kurt Vonnegut!"
Hilarious !
Hey, Vonnegut, I'm stopping payment on the check!

My brother met Kurt Vonnegut at UTC back in the late 80s. He was starstruck, but also disappointed that more people weren't there to hear him speak.
I love the part where he fires Vonnegut for not knowing Vonnegut, my favorite scene in the movie.
I'm sure Vonnegut got a huge kick out of it.
@@vaylonkenadell Vonnegut said in an interview that more people recognize him for his cameo in the movie than for his books.

if you slow it down, you can tell he's on the verge of breaking out in laughter 😆
They left out the best part when the teacher would not accept kurts paper on himself, thought it was fake. Hillarious
Years ago I read some short stories from Kurt. And Pen name Kilgore Trout. Still remember some. Very good.
So amazing that Vonnegut failed the assignment 😂

Well, she got it half right!
Then his English teacher goes whoever wrote you this paper doesn't know the first thing about Kurt Vonnegut and Vonnegut wrote his paper lmao
Even funnier that Keith Gordon went on to adapt Vonnegut's Mother Night into a film.
You get a brief from Kurt Vonnegut and he proof reads your essay. Then your teacher still remarks, "Looks like you didn't get it. "
I went to a garage sale the other day and saw a book by him. I should have bought it.
