D-10 dozer rescue! Mountain top heavy haul!

  • One of the few Caterpillar D-10 dozers in Oregon blew it's engine while working on a remote jobsite in the Cascade mountains. It had to be disassembled, then pulled and pushed down the mountain by a few other machines so that it could be loaded on Hartill Heavy Haul's 9 axle and hauled down to southern California

My Father started working for Caterpillar in the 50's, he became a remote field mechanic eventually and went all over Colorado in the mud snow, sides of cliffs etc. He even worked on them inside giant mines. Engineers Pass was a scary repair he related and he was helicoptered in. He also crawled out on the giant mining machines to replace hoses high above the ground (the ones over the open pit mines with the giant booms and buckets that were hundreds of feet off the ground). He was even inside Cheyenne Mtn and worked on the military generators there. There was nothing he couldn't fix in the field. He got stuck in many a place sometimes for days. His skills were beyond none (he could build a shopping mall with a Q-Tip and a pocket knife) and everyone loved him and went out of their way to accommodate any request he might make, sometimes for more help and schlepping even engines into remote places happened, he was personally requested because of his can-do work ethic. I have some fond and scary memories of going with him and as a young lady getting to drive and operate all the equipment was an added bonus. RIP Dad!

Thank you for this. My dad, who passed over twenty years ago, worked for the Army Corps of Engineers out of Seattle. Being fully qualified as a heavy mechanic, he also did a few heavy rescues out at Mud Mountain. Some in place fixes and some recovery hauls. Of course never a video, but oh the stories!

Big difference, I learned off road in a Mack DM800 hauling coal. You only got one chance to get it right on some of those roads. I’ve come down off a strip job with my door hanging open because it started to rain, my cousin told me, don’t worry about the truck, get away from it if she goes. Talk about taking the fun out it, that was the day I learned it wasn’t all fun n games. But anyway, props to you pilot car guys too, well done. 👍🇺🇸

I got that they used a Deere and an excavator to push it down the mountain.
I was hoping for a clear "how do they get that honking big tractor onto the trailer and for that matter how does the trailer come apart to get it on". I was disappointed. I still don't know.

Oregon doesn't like the 16 tire groups like most of the California trailers have and makes it much harder to permit the heavier weights on them. So up here you see the bigger Tri axle group trailers to pull the same weight as what's hauled on tandems in California.

They shipped them on rail cars the same way, blade, tracks and tractor in 3 parts. Well technically 4 parts, since there are two tracks. 😁
Kinda wonder what that rig scaled with the tracks on?

No pilot car was required for the rest of the trip once he hit the main highway. I didn't show the loading or the chaining down... because we had to load it and chain it down. It's hard to film and get the job done at the same time, so a lot of times I miss the main part of the job on film. And yes, that dozer was legally and safely tied down

    • @CaseyLaDelle

I should clarify that different roads have different pilot car requirements depending on the size of the load. This particular load didn't require two pilots anywhere on the route, but there were places where it required one in the front, and places where it required one in the back. So I just moved back and forth as needed

Most people call Komatsus Korotsu, we have a local quarry cited by EPA for leaking petroleum into waterways. All of it came off the Komatsu loaders they were running. Cat loader was not leaking anything.
