Fret 5-7 would be a proper natural 2nd while 5-9 would be a proper major 3rd. We drop that 9th fret down to 8 and it's a b3.

The natural 2nd is the same interval, whether minor or major; therefore, there is no such thing as major 2nd or minor 2nd. 3rds, however, are identified as major or minor because the interval from the root is different depending on which scale you're using: 3 semitones for minor key, 4 semitones for major. Hope this helps.
