Powerful song! My grandpa was born and raised in the South of Bahia in Brazil. His father was a little sugar cane farmer and died after a snakebite. Grandpa was the oldest son and took care of the whole family during hard years in Brazil '50s. They tried to work in the family's sugar cane fields, but they needed to sell their two oxen used to ran the farm, then the hungry started. The region has hard drought periods, the opposite problem of Patches with rains. He took the hard mission of conduct the family to a new area, they moved to São Paulo. He was like a father to every one of his siblings. He supported them by working hard in the coffee farms and also logging into the wild forest for months far from home. I cried a lot listen to Patches and remembering my hero, my grandpa Jose Antonio.
Real story telling...the way a song should be. Not like the crap that's out there now. Thanks Clarence for showing them the way. We need a 100 more like you.
I looked up Patches after talking with a Black fellow my age 63 today. He was listening to Break Up to Make Up on a Sirius station, and I asked, Stylistics? A Clarence Carter song came on next, and we remembered Patches. Beautiful song. Funny how some of the lyrics came back to me 50+ years after I bought the 45. I mentioned listening to AM radio (CKLW in Windsor Ontario, across from Detroit). I still have the 1972 Top 100 list, which shows how diverse the music was. Motown, of course, but Joe Cocker, Sammy Davis, Jr., the Moody Blues, Elvis Presley, and the O'Jays. Top ten: Lean on Me (Bill Withers); Alone Again (Naturally)(Gilbert O'Sullivan; Me and Mrs. Jones (Billy Paul); American Pie (Don McLean); I Got Cha'(Joe Tex); Without You (Nilsson); Betcha' By Golly Wow (Stylistics); Oh Girl (Chi-Lites); School's Out (Alice Cooper); My Ding-a-Ling (Chuck Berry). Great stuff.
Gayle Mitchell. true. wat teard me up.is when he scream " lord give him strength to face another day" so good hits me hard. our strenght comes from the almighty. sweet
A glimpse into the family life of Patches. A glimpse into the love that drove them. That love is what makes us cry. It's a powerful, enduring deep love we all crave. I envy those who have it, but maybe someday I will.
June 9, 2023 Somebody just recommended this song to me and it is moving and wonderful - inspirational. I just googled Clarence Carter and see that he's still going strong - blessings to you.
I saw Clarence Carter in Augusta, Georgia in 1968-1969 at Leonards Lounge on Deans Bridge Road. He was fantastic!! Such a talent!! Miss those days!! Thank you Clarence for your contributions to the music of my youth!! GOD bless!!
First time i have seen this live but this song has been with me since my younger days, always brings a tear to my eye because my kids and i were patches in real life,Thank God they r all grown and this still remains our favorite song!I remember my mom thru d bad times also saying"Lord give us strength to face another day" thanks mammy!
Always one of my favorite songs. This song was written by General Johnson, (Leader of "The Chairmen of the Board." "Biggest National hit "Give me just a little more time." - My band in NC got to open for Clarence Carter once and the Charimen of the board several times. I will never be famous or rich, but they are surely great memories I will always have.
A 45 record of Clarence Carter singing Funky Fever on one side and Slip Away on the other is the first record I remember having as a small child. I played Funky Fever so many times that I think I wore that record out.
The one song that made me feel like a man and step up to the plate to help my other 6 siblings and either parents in their absence, because my daddy told me in the early 60's these very same words.
TODAY IN MUSIC HISTORY: July 18, 1970 - 50 Years Ago Today: Clarence Carter debuted at No. 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart with his single, "Patches." This was the singer/songwriter/guitarist's 11th entry on the Hot 100 in 3 years and his 4th Top 40 and 2nd Top Ten when it peaked at No. 4 on September 19, 1970. The single peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard R&B Chart and it earned a Grammy for Best R&B song for songwriters Ronald Dunbar and General Johnson. Carter had been blind since the age of one and taught himself to play the guitar at the age of 11. [07/18/2020]
Before there was there Clemons there was Carter. the first Clarence. And yes, this WAS a #1 song. Melodrama, great story, strong lyrics and a heartfelt performance by CC. What's not to like?
The cool thing about this song is that the man who wrote was the owner of one of the recording studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. It is the story of his life. He wrote it after his dad died in a tractor accident and it became a number one hit.
This humble, beautiful yet strong thing draws our attention way after The 70s when he hit our parents who transferred him unto us !!! We loveth the dear Clarence and will never apologise !!! He is just more proof that a man with 'more and enhanced' silvers hairs is even sexier than younger things !!! And we loveth thee too, dear 'Richard McCulley, creator of Beat Magazine !!!
Heard this song the first time 3.5 years ago . immediately I could identify with the words. Sometimes the older songs are the greatest. it makes me emotional. .....father and son thing I guess. so sad and real the essence of this song .
jerry bogans - Clarence's music is more country than most country artists on the radio today. Southern soul and blues has that down home feel to it, and it's great.
Love this song. It brings tears to my eyes. Its an amazing song and so true on how kid's have to take over when they lose one parent. They fill in. So sad for the kids.
Man that was my dad he was the oy working until we got old enough to wk even when i worked he let me keep my own money he bought a new truck two trucks camaro couldnt have wish for an earthly father when i was young i thought he was not hip all he wanted was me to not ruin my life miss them all
I always grew up on this version. I never knew chairman of the board made the song until on day I got a greatest hits album. I found out a few months ago they wrote the song. Wow am radio was so misinformed
Man i use to love and still do i love this song reminds me of my dad no education but fuck he refused to take a back seat to anyone he bought me a new truck when i was 14 man he i miss him love you dad always
listen to the lyrics, back then there was no free money, you had to work for what you wanted...it was especially hard if a parent died and left young children,,,soooo dear please listen to the lyrics once again...then comment.
original 1970 fan...sitting in a coffeeshop watching youtube...glad I had some napkins in hand, trying not to let anyone notice a 66 year old honky wiping away tears...someone did a slideshow of this song with lyrics which will bring tears to the eyes of a marble statue...ruclips.net/video/30JzGZYI_Hw/видео.html
Does anyone know that this song has nothing to be with clarence's life, it is the story of Rick Hall, the owner of FAME recording studio in muscle shoals alabama, rick asked clarence to record the song for him in 1970 after his father was crushed by a tractor who he ironically bought for him, sad story, but not about Clarence
What would I give For just a few moments What would I give Just to have you near Tell me you will try To slip away somehow Oh, I need you, darling I want to see you right now Can you slip away Slip away Slip away Oh, I need you so Love, oh, love How sweet it is When you steal it, darling Let me tell you somethin’ now how sweet it is Now I know it’s wrong The things I ask you to do But please believe me, darling I don’t mean to hurt you But could you just slip away Without him knowing you’re gone Then we could meet somewhere Somewhere where we’re both are not known And can you slip away Slip away Slip away I need you so Oh, can you slip away, baby I’d like to see you right now, darling Can you slip away now, baby ‘Cause I got to, I got to see you I feel a deep burning inside Oh, I wish you could slip away ; 7 ]

The great Clarence Carter was one of the reasons I picked up a Strat and started to belt out the blues. This man is a freakin' legend!
Clarence Carter is still putting on a great performance with a sense of humor!

I was six years old when my dad passed away and I still always got a lump in my throat forty-three years later
We applaud and resonate with Baby-Gayle's honesty ... who is of the Mitchell Kind !!!

Wow what an honor !!!
Every time I hear "The Chairmen of the Board" I just assumed it was Ole Blue Eyes:)
9 years and no one pointed out you're wrong. It was written by Rick Hall, owner of Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama. Damn.
What a set of pipes this man had
I cry everytime 😢...beautiful
Great song.....Great story......God Bless Muscle Shoals....

God bless Clarence, I loved this song when growing up.
When all is lost and your down and out...just remember patches
Thanks, what a great sound in his voice. He could have followed Charlie Pride. I can hear that country feel, which is where I'm from.
jerry bogans - Clarence's music is more country than most country artists on the radio today. Southern soul and blues has that down home feel to it, and it's great.

Grande linda musica, uma banda brasileira fez um vesão dessa musica, e fez um grande sucesso, mas o original e melhor,
clarence the Man.
It was co - written along General Norman Johnson of the Chairman of the Board..... He is surely missed
Hard to believe 1970 was 50 years ago.

+Judson Ruddick PBS has a good documentary on Muscle Shoals with a lot of the musicians who performed/recorded there.
Judson Ruddick False
Judson Ruddick Where did you get that information from because that is not accurate....
if you watch the muscle shoals documentary you will see it is about rick halls father
Nikki G yes it is
Such a sad song
2020
What would I give
For just a few moments
What would I give
Just to have you near
Tell me you will try
To slip away somehow
Oh, I need you, darling
I want to see you right now
Can you slip away
Slip away
Slip away
Oh, I need you so
Love, oh, love
How sweet it is
When you steal it, darling
Let me tell you somethin’ now how sweet it is
Now I know it’s wrong
The things I ask you to do
But please believe me, darling
I don’t mean to hurt you
But could you just slip away
Without him knowing you’re gone
Then we could meet somewhere
Somewhere where we’re both are not known
And can you slip away
Slip away
Slip away
I need you so
Oh, can you slip away, baby
I’d like to see you right now, darling
Can you slip away now, baby
‘Cause I got to, I got to see you
I feel a deep burning inside
Oh, I wish you could slip away
