Jacob Howes I don't know what story you are referring to, but with regards to your question, that wasn't a civil war and IIRC from history class the biggest problem there was that public opinion was against the Japanese Americans. While that may be a counter example of where most of the military did not step in a prevent a tragedy, it was not really a battle between the government and citizens unless the citizens had weaponry and actively tried to defend themselves. Just my two cents...we can agree to disagree. Have a good day! :)

A family member of mine who's a psychologist & anti-gun once asked me innocently, "Why does anyone need an assault weapon?" I responded to her questions with a question of my own, "What's an assault weapon?" I asked. She was dumbfounded. After several seconds she said "I don't know, I'm not a gun person." I then explained to her "No one can define it because it's a made up term. There's no such thing, unless you're referring to anything someone used to assault someone else."

I'm Canadian and although not a gun owner I have fired an AR-15 and a few other firearms. I think I "get it" as far as gun owners go. In the first place, 99% of gun owners obey the law and wouldn't even consider using one as a weapon. It would be like asking a porsche owner why he needs a car that can go so fast when he can get a "smart car", or why a guitar player would need an electric guitar if he had an acoustic. So there's a certain level of insult attached to the question.
Liberal anti-gun people need to stop blaming the tool and blaming the person using it. People are committing these crimes not because they need shooting practice but because they just don't care about other people. Blaming the tool is a convenient way for them to feel better about themselves, like they've done something to make the world better. Blame the criminal and stop glorifying them in the media. Don't anguish about what caused this in the first place, just make the justice harsh and swift. And stop hiding behind your fears.
And pro-gun people need to stop trying to hide behind that 2nd amendment and hollering about their rights. The first words of the 2nd amendment are "A well regulated militia...". I live in Canada where we have no 2nd amendment and I'm still able to fire an AR-15. Stop hiding behind your fears.
And, for what it's worth, I think social media is to blame for a lot of the violence out there. That's my 2 cent's worth. Peace.

    • @rickcheyne
      @rickcheyne 6 лет назад

Well they had a rebellion but you can paint it how you like. Canadians didn't seem to have a problem with such a "tyrannical" government. And much of new england was in support of your "tyrannical" government at the time too. The second amendment was 15 years after 1776, so it's a little late to pin this one on the tyrannical government of the past. It was really brought in because farmers and ranchers were being attacked regularly by "Indians" and needed to protect themselves. The "Indians" were fighting back because they were basically being slaughtered in the name of US expansion. They also needed to "protect themselves" against their slaves in case the slaves decided they didn't like being slaves any more.
And the US government had it's eyes on expanding their empire and needed a large militia to defend it. In 1803 they "purchased" a large portion of the continent. The odd thing is they didn't purchase it from the people who lived there. They sent the money to Napoleon, who was desparate for cash to pay for his own empirical endeavours. Then they needed an even bigger militia to protect themselves against even more "Indians".
Many other countries do not have a second amendment but you don't hear them crying about it.
Yeah I think I get it.

      @CplLe52irRC 5 лет назад +9

...and by disarming the Indians, they were subjected to the white man's law, the white man's religion and the white man's diseases. Imagine if the Indians would have been allowed to form their own militias? Maybe the white man wouldn't have been able subject them to the atrocities that they suffered. Maybe the Jews in Germany in 1935 could have formed their own militia and were allowed to keep guns to protect themselves from the Nazis? I'm sure Hitler would have had a much harder time trying to send the Jews to concentration camps. Maybe the Cambodians in 1975 could have formed their militias and kept their guns so that Pol Pot wouldn't have been able to kill 1.5 to 2 million Cambodians so easily? You live in Canada, the land of political stability but don't take what many people in this world take for granted, the situation could easily change. Maybe you CAN fire an AR-15 for now but Nanny Trudeau is planning on changing the firearms laws because she thinks that these toys are too dangerous.

Yeap, I mentioned to a rando on twitter who wanted all guns banned in Canada “because their unsafe” So I just pointed out in a dick-ish way “So then if their that unsafe, do you plan to stop there or ban guns for cops too? And what about 1,000 + lb vehicle ? Many more are killed by unsafe drivers because their not well trained, unlike Canadian gun owners, Should we ban them too ? No, There is risk in everything.” People don’t have enough real hobbies these days, I don’t see why someone else who know’s nothing about guns, should take that hobby away for many target shooters and so on and the obvious, they will never get criminals to hand in their already illegally owned guns because of some ban.

For the most part, I agree. However, the second part of the 2md, clearly followed by a comma, states, " the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". The people not only have a basic right to protect themselves and they can be the militia in time of need.

That's a great answer, and it gets to the heart of both the answer and question rather well.
There are far too many people out there - the sort of people who ask things like "why do YOU need an AR-15?" - who assume that they, or the government, or a bureaucracy somewhere have the authority and obligation to paw through your property and/or shopping lists, and decide how much of what they find you "need" or "deserve", when in truth nobody holds such authority exists over a free people, while a truly free people have rights to privacy, private property, self-defense, etc.

I get what you are saying but remember that a fire extinguisher does no also increase your chance of accidental death of your or your family. (talking about a gun in general rather than AR) Owning a firearm increase your mortality rate from all causes. Now this is not to say that you should not be allowed to own one but to own on for personal safety is no a reason supported by data.

    • @TheJeep1967
      @TheJeep1967 8 лет назад +9

Show me the data. Considering that in 2013 in the USA there were approximately 300 million privately owned firearms and that same year there were 500 deaths from firearms accidents, I'd say the chance of an accidental death just from owning a firearm are so small as to be insignificant. Also, considering that in that same year 38,000 people died from accidental poisoning, I'd have to observe that having a gun in your home is a hell of a lot less dangerous than having poisonous or toxic products in your home.

@@georgemoomaw9437 my comment is on the cultural difference between Canadians and Americans. Americans see themselves as the police of the world where most of the rest of the world sees them as warmongers. When Americans arrive with guns they are the only ones that think its freedom.
In response to you're comments about Canada, the absence of laws isn't the presence of freedom like most Americans think. I agree that some Canadian gun laws are going too far but I have to say having a little too much regulation is better than having not enough especially in a country like the US where the culture around guns is half ways based on shooting your own people.
The US is actually more like the frog in the fable you mentioned because they refuse to make a change. You guys recognized drivers licenses were necessary a long time ago. Why so stubborn about making sure people know how to properly and safely operate a gun before letting them use it?
There is one of the fundamental differences between American and Canadian culture, Americans care more about individual rights and Canadians care more about the collective good. It's not unreasonable to draw a correlation between priority of the collective good and crime rates. That kinda explains why so many Americans feel they need guns to protect themselves in their own homes.
It's funny that you mention your grandparents. My Grandma was born in the US and her family immigrated to Canada. She had nothing but troubles with the US. She almost renounced her American citizenship.

      7) I can protect my home with it
By shooting anyone that comes near? By shooting a non-violent thief? ummm don't be a thief, you come onto my property and steal from me, I don't care if it's a $3 item or a $3000 item, you've just handed the safety of your life over to me.

"There were 172 victims of firearm-related homicide in 2012"
"In 2012, 55% of homicides involving firearms had been cleared" (Meaning 45% remained unsolved, and cant be associated with legal, licensed owners!)
"In 2012, about half (46%) of all homicides committed with a firearm were gang-related" (Therefore, they would be ineligible for a PAL because of such known associations!)
Leaving 9% of 172 victims, or 15 still unaccounted. 4 unintentional hunting accident fatalities, 7 police shootings brings us to 4.
So how many of those 4 were the 2 million licensed Canadian firearm owners responsible for?
We have 80,000 doctors in this country responsible for an estimated 20,000 deaths annually due to medical errors. Should we restrict or prohibit Social Healthcare too?

First , that 60% of those killed in their own home with a firearm commit suicide. A Harvard study shows that the availability of a firearm has no affect on the number of suicides. IOW, if someone who is suicidal doesn't have a firearm, they will kill themselves using another method. The second fact they omit is that of the remaining shootings in firearms owners homes over 99% of them are with other firearms brought into the home, and NOT with the firearms the homeowner owns.

You really made some good points. I wish people in my country could understand that. I'm from Tucuman, Argentina, and the violence, criminals will kill you just to steal your shoes, your phone o your backpack, and sadly there is nothing we can do about it. A few weeks ago they tried to shoot my mother just to steal her purse, no question asked, just pulling the trigger. Thank god they had a malfunction otherwise my mother wouldn't be with us today. There is nothing we can do in order to prevent or defend ourselfs more than taking a knife with us. The police is corrupt so they just take ages to come or look the other way around. When I was in the U.S that was a totally different experience, I felt protected. Enjoy everyday like me, because I might not survive tomorrow

I like the portion on "Justification". You should not need to justify your purchase choice or JUSTIFY your RIGHT to defend Life, Property or your inherent right to own and operate a firearm in a safe manor. In the US there is an inherent right to own a firearm and on more then a few occasions those people who owned them have stuck-up for the unarmed in many situations. One that stands the most in my mind and to use as an example of corruption on a government level is "The Battle of Athens, Tennessee 1946".

I agree with everything said here.
I would like to see a modified licensing system. Graduated like we have with driving in Ontario. Increased professional training with mature adult supervision for youth. Like any piece of machinery firearms demand respect. The current requirements for training are insufficient. No shooting is required. Many people get extra professional training on their own and I applaud them. Education and professionalism is key. This means taking responsibility, which unfortunately is not in our national identity anymore. Dependence on government is.

It's difficult to reason with folks who base their opinions solely on emotions, and limited knowledge.
If I "ask back" to people who are anti-gun, inquiring about alcohol (and all the damage that comes with it), I rarely if every get a logical reply. They want their "right" to get completely blitzed (of course folks will argue not everyone gets blitzed, but hey, every gun owner is treated as a potential mass murderer, right?) and make poor life decisions that not only affect themselves, but also those around them, including strangers as well. If alcohol were treated as a firearm, they would pull their hair out at the imposition on their God given rights as Canadians!
How about alcohol safety classes, background checks (for prior abuse) and purchase and acquisition cards for liquor?
How about convicted felons cannot purchase or possess alcohol?
How about daily, weekly, and monthly limits to alcohol? You don't "need" three drinks, do you? A national registry where you are restricted in how much alcohol you can purchase.
How about requiring secure alcohol storage? With inspections upon demand by the RCMP, to insure alcohol is safe from kids.
How about the government clamping down on hard alcohol? You don't need that much booze, right? Just wine and beer with alcohol limits.
How about 6 packs only, anywhere? Because you don't need a 12 pack, and a case of 24 is begging for mayhem.
How about you are not allowed to give alcohol to anyone else? This will prevent people from drinking more than the government regulates, daily, weekly, monthly, etc.
In a world what demands people go "green", perhaps there should be water and power meters that have a maximum daily usage? Run your water too much, and it shuts off until the next day. Draw too much power from the grid? Your house powers down. Have thermostats "nationalized", you get one setting for heating, and limited access to air conditioning.
I illustrate the potential for a "slippery slope", but usually the folks I try and converse have the attention span (or interest) of a gnat.
At that point they simply become snarky or belligerent, once they realize their hypocrisy.

I'm not anti-gun, but I am very anti-'guns for everyone', purely because I don't trust the average person to be responsible, sensible or trained.
I thought some of the arguments in the video had a few holes but totally agree that discussion needs to be about facts and rational debate, as opposed to "you want my guns, come take em" VS "All gun owners are psychopaths".

Yeah at least that shit doesn't work in 50% conservative states like WA. www.truthandaction.org/largest-felony-civil-disobedience-rally-americas-history/2/ Our right to protect ourselves with a firearm is not a government given right it is a natural right or god-given right. We also have the right to revolt against a corrupt government, again, not a government given right.
I'm not a libertarian, their views on economics are often naive and far too trusting of an already blatantly greedy and rigged economic system. However they speak the truth, from the minds of our founding fathers, the creation of America was not just the creation of a new government it was the creation of a truly freed people. If necessary, able to be free of their government as well. Though as a Bernie supporter I think we need to improve our government, removing money from politics first and foremost. Not abandoning what could easily be the most powerful economy, with the best healthcare and public to higher education on the planet.

No hidden bullets like tube-fed designs. It’s more ergonomically customizable. It’s a flexible platform... I pursue the same characteristics with power tools, motorcycles, and automobiles. Why do people buy crossover SUVs? Flexibility. For duty on our 600 acres, it’s an effective platform for hunting pests like marmots and coyotes... where 223 soft points or hollowpoints are an ideal projectile.

I grew to appreciate... if just for weight and the amount of ammo I could carry. Now...50 years later..I have 4 AR platforms that I have even built.. two 5.56, a 300 Whisper and a 7.62x51. They have different purposes but..at different distances LOL. They are easy to build and reloading helps me feed them ... BTW...none of mine ever came home and told me they killed anyone... .........but an AR-15 chambered in 5.56 is a great, durable weapon,,,with up to 300 yards, depending on the purpose of the rifle.....my opinion from experience, your results may be different.

One person elsewhere made a good point; Why did Rosa Parks have to sit in the front of the bus? In a free society, you don't have to justify your actions, you are ALLOWED to do anything that is not specifically illegal. And often we humans do things that are illegal, to protest unfair laws that outlaw things such as racism or other injustices, in the hope of getting those unfair laws changed. My usual analogy is "Why do I need to own a fire extinguisher?" Well, sometimes fires get started in the kitchen or an electrical appliance fails or the like; And I don't want my home to burn up. In the same exact way, I don't want to be unable to stop someone from attacking myself or my neighbors and harming them - Someone who is willing to break the law against murder, is no more willing to stop if you just use harsh language and that's all you have, than cursing at a fire will stop it.

And the medical mistakes leading to death, well, medical care is necessary as well for obvious reasons. Guns are not necessary like cars and medical care, but I can understand that they offer protection from others. I think that guns can be used recreationally and safely, they just shouldn't fall into the wrong hands, and the same can be said about cars or medical degrees. I think that I personally am neutral when it comes to gun control. There are good arguments on both sides.

Thank you for the video. It was clear, concise and did a very good job of calmly stating a point. Thank you from a fellow Canuck.

You present so well - not sure if you do this but having public workshops with a large venue would be great.

It's the multi-tool of rifles. Capable of doing pretty much anything you want it to do at a reasonable price point

Also they need to be fully automatic to be good and you use a 3 point sling to draw them fast and be able to walk and shoot together.

You shoot them with one hand with the sling. They can burn up. Don't get your face close.
