@Hollywood Dreams A lot more than what they did. There were clear signs that he needed professional help when he was a teen - before he was an adult.
EDIT: 2 Years later, I'm less certain of my opinion on this. They did get him some kind of counselling or therapy. Even I can't be sure about what else Elliot's parents should have done.

Parents get exhausted too and sometimes just can't help enough. I was very suicidal for about ten years in my youth and my parents first helped and put me to therapy etc and even hospital care but after some time they gave up, they were done and started getting ill too. But his father does seem very odd though...

You are drawing conclusions from the way he talks about Eliot. You forget- this isn’t a conversation in the corner of a pub with friends. This interview is on RUclips, possibly TV. Everyone is watching including the victims+ family of victims
Elliot was clearly in the wrong and I can understand why he mentioned the victims first. If he went out and said “I’m so sad, my boy Elliot was such an intelligent boy I loved him” and then hardly mention the victims he would get eviscerated by the same people who are saying he’s a psychopath now

Dad appears to have narcissistic personality. Never talks about love of his son, talks about the nightmare for himself etc etc. dad was a big part of the problem.

    • @TheTarco
      @TheTarco 8 лет назад +603

Jeremy is right Torre, if you read his story he wrote about his life, from what he wrote, his dad was never a very loving person towards Elliot.
And I love how he says "We never saw this coming". From that same book, Elliot tells how he spoke with his father on many occasions how he couldn't get laid, how angry that got him, how we used to go on websites that had this sort of "killing people because you can't get laid" vibe, and his father dismissed it. All Elliot needed was a decent father figure in his life, and he probably would have made it through just fine.
Don't get me wrong, Elliot Rodgers is narcissistic, racist and spoilt, but he had no one to really talk about his problems with. He couldn't talk to his mother because she was female, and that was half the problem, so he needed his father, and he attempted to reach out to him, and his father retracted.
When you read his book, at first, the thought of hurting others really disturbed him. He hated it. It's only when his problems were left to fester, when his urge to hurt others grew. His father was half the problem, and this video proves that his father didn't care about him, hell listen to him, sounds like he's reading it off a script.

No. But when you subject a child to years and years and years of neglect by way of narcissism and participation trophies, this is how you're doing more damage than good as a parent. Thats not to say the kid didnt have some physiological imbalances of some sort... but when you listen to Elliot speak... it sounds very much like a child who was raised in a bubble, and once greeted with the real world... couldnt cope.
It's not justifying the kids actions by any means, but based on the way his father speaks of him and if you read about his fathers personality just a little bit, its pretty clear the kid dealt with a narcissistic father.

Noone mentioned how stressful constant moving from one location to another is for young kids. First they moved from Britain to USA, then his parents divorced and they were moving every year to a different house and Elliot had to switch between his mother´s house and his father´s house every couple of days or every week.
He had zero stability in his life. His anxiety obviously came from this, then the neglect from his father and bullying at school finished it. This could never end up well.
In all the cases of serial or mass murderers, there´s always something traumatic in their life. Sometimes it can be something what adults don´t perceive as traumatising (like constant moving) but it´s very stressful for children. The younger kids are, the more stability, safety and routine they need.

the shooter's name is elliot. you didnt really answer his question. Dramatics being, shooting up a campus and killing people/themselves.
The answer is narcissistic belief that their life is injustice and taking revenge on everything that they admired but could never grasp.
Elliot made quite a few videos about how girls dont want/see him and he basicly means that he has 0 social skills.
So he was lonely and thus instead of just killing himself he went so far as to take revenge on existence itself before ending his own.
Existence being the thing he longed for for years but could never grasp. (pretty girls, social status etc.) He went after the very thing he admired.

+Cali Curmudgeon I don't know why Hollywood gets branded as a mecca of liberalism. There are a lot, and I mean a lot of conservative people in Hollywood. The liberalism that's reflected in Hollywood is social liberalism, and that's because of the nature of storytelling. It's a liberal art. This father is not a Hollywood success story. He had money and was doing good for himself, but he wasn't Hollywood royalty. The culture you're describing is a small one. Not everyone in Hollywood is wealthy. It's an industry, and they clock in at the beginning of the day and clock out when it's over.
This whole liberal v. conservatism (which your photo clearly suggests... I mean, my god) is hogwash. Leftist parents are not better or worse than conservative parents.

Environment only does so much, when you have 1000 dollar apartments multiple, higher end cars cars and gold necklaces as gifts and could afford to eat expensive sushi, get first class tickets and stay in top line hotels, I'd say the worth thing his father did was give him too much, pr maybe it was the mother.
Even the guns he used totaled more than 1.5k.
Never even mentioned that in the manifesto. There's this constant thing where he is saying I am persecuted, I am invisible. But he never details specifics or indeed any interactions except for one where he instigated violence first and got fucked right up by some total brah who did the world a favor and broke his ankle. Name an instance of bullying he went though. He wasn't a Columbine type he was a narcissistic aspie with a persecution complex.
NO form of parenting can fix the kind of guy who gets genuinely jealous of a little brother over shit that he MIGHT be able to do later on and plans to kill them. Honestly it's a miracle he didn't get outright bashed by some civilly minded type but then that's probably because for all the shit he had to type in that manifesto he by ALL accounts, meaning every roommate, every acquaintance, ever ex friend said he was all mono syllabic in answers and never said shit till he was drunk enough to slur.

I am sorry, I do not wish to pass judgment on anyone, as I know that many parents do their absolute best and their child still slips into the darkness somehow - but this man is just terrible to me. To say that you wish your son was never born? My god. Say that you wish he had never done the wrongs he committed, but to say that? In his manifesto Elliot wrote how his parents told him that he was an "accident". So I guess that it's not surprising that his father feels this way - he was pretty cruel to his son from the start in my honest opinion.
And to arrogantly claim that you "never saw this coming"???? His son was in therapy for YEARS, and his mother called the police on him about a week prior to the murders, not to mention that the cops were called when he broke his ankle at that party and his parents were notified about the incident. It's true that he may have kept his "darker side" hidden, but signs were there and to claim you had NO idea? And then to spend the rest of the interview just feeling sorry for yourself? Exactly. His father really should NOT have done a public interview. He claims that he is doing it for the noble reason of trying to prevent another incident such as this, but does he really believe that feeling sorry for himself and telling Barbara Walters how "tough" he is having it on national television is going to stop future crime? It seems that he is rather narcissistic himself.
And after telling Elliot that he was an accident at a young age, is it really such a stretch to now say that you wish he had never been born? I wouldn't think so, and yet he acts like Ms. Walters question is SO difficult for him. I agree with the other poster here who said that he seems kind of phony.
I hate to judge the way that I am here, as I know it isn't easy dealing with mental/emotional illness, but I do believe that his parents could have given the situation more attention and not just thrown "toys" at Elliot for 22 years.

Taken him to a brothel - really??? Now, THERE'S the way to cure mental instability (said no one ever), 'cause we all know that sticking your shlong into a hole will cure anything - however, I do agree that this kid was probably "bought" and basically ignored by the father and that makes for a fairly lonely existence. I have a feeling this poor kid knew about possessions, but not about love or familial stability and that makes for a fairly screwed up personality. For some reason watching this kid's mannerisms as well as his speech patterns, that along with a healthy dose of narcissism (as a defense mechanism), he may have some some closeted homosexual issues, and was really conflicted about it. Not a diagnosis of any kind, but just my humble opinion.

I mean 22 and virgin? Who the fuck cares? Why did it even matter to him? It might sound old but it seems like nobody ever told that guy to stay true to himself, to be himself and that sooner or later people would like him that way. I mean just watch his videos, in every video that guy is "acting" like he is some evil mastermind instead of beeing himself.
I also blame society that pledges tolerance for every minority day and night but when it comes to actually talk to a person which seems a bit strange at first everybody is hiding. There is no tolerance for "wierdos". If im out with my friends at friday/saturday night and we see someone who seems lonely we generally inviting him for a drink. It's not that hard. Of course some people turn out to be assholes but others are really plain and they are happy that they finally found some friends and people to talk with. Maybe something simple like that could have prevent that horrible tragedy.

This grandiose sense of self, seeing himself as nothing but a victim, this fixation on being intimate with a girl, the incapability of self-reflection and learning from his mistakes, this wish to get even with the world and this feeling of power, knowing what’s coming to these girls but they don’t, the emotional numbness he’s displaying…this guy is way different than a normal person. He looks like someone with a serious mental illness.
Some people commented that this is a classic example of narcissistic personality disorder but I think he’s not. This looks more like pathological psychopathy (which in itself is classified by strong narcissistic traits).
A usual narcissist would rant or rage when feeling like he has been mistreated but this guy is just straight up cold. No emotion, no conscience which is part of psychopathy. In other videos you can see him talk about how he has the perfect car and perfect life but women still reject him. This guy doesn’t understand what it takes to form an emotional connection to someone because he is literally incapable of doing so. Psychopaths are born without the ability of having a conscience, feeling guilt, shame or fear. It’s because they’re literally missing brain tissue in the parts of their brains where these emotions are produced. Since psychopaths are incapable of empathy, they can only learn to understand human behavior and mimic emotions but can never feel them (so they wouldn’t flirt with a widow on their husband’s funeral because they’ve learned it’s inappropriate) and many get quite good at it, you’d never know. A high functioning psychopath would get girls and be well liked but would never feel anything for them, except a sense of power over them. The father…I don’t even know where to start. No display of real emotions either, bunch of phrases, rationalizing the whole thing and no accountability….Seems like it goes down the family tree…

My father wasn't the best, he was poor, tough on me but he made me a man. I didn't lose my virginity til 21, it was up to me to get up off my arse and do what's right, lose weight, get a job, socialise and I was an introvert, I'd go to the Library and only had 1 mate at school. Then I met another kid, he was spoilt to the core, had everything handed to him on a silver platter, 2.5k worth of clothes every 6-12 months, 10 acre farm with nice house, a motorbike, his mother would pay for his drugs so that he won't smash up the house, so I think to myself, tough times create strong men, weak times create weak men who blame others, become too spoilt that they become dangerous to other, elliot had everything thrown at him, gave him no time to progress into a man and learn how the real world worked

Yeah, his dad was a prick I am sure but what about Elliot's mother? All we hear about in the media is what a bad Daddy Peter Rodger is, how he turned Elliot out that way, yes I agree that he doesn't deserve father of the year but surely E.R's mother is partially to blame, right? I'm starting to see that we live in a cushion-box society where women are always innocent of any wrongdoing and men are inherently guilty of all evil that occurs, at least in the media's eye. Gr8 job progressives.
