To clarify why left is throwing the battle: On the left is uchidachi (instructor) who initiates the action and sets the pace, while allowing the shidachi to strike the winning blow. Uchidachi is a nurturing instructor who intentionally loses in order for shidachi to develop. The kata is not competitive nor a test of one's abilities. This role requires one to be humble and responsible because it embodies self-sacrifice of uchidachi in order to teach shidachi by offering guidance and education.
Part of being able to pass your kata testing is the working together of two partners. If they don’t work together and aren’t on the same timing they will both fail their test.
This is Kata, an entirely scripted series of moves, used to demonstrate timing and precision. Each Kata tells a kind of story, with attacks, blocks and counters. Other elements of kendo are far more physical, and sparring especially so. By far the hardest art I've ever tried, in terms of 'getting it right', but that's what has kept me interested and attending! For me, it 'fitted' properly.
tbh it doesnt matter if they are sharp or not... i dont know if you ever tried doing kata like this... striking with such force will cause serious injury if you fail... its really impressive
Just started learning ropponme for my Nidan grading next year. I love how you really feel and learn more about the relationship between the uchidachi and shidachi as you learn each kata. Definitely one of my favorite aspects of my journey through Kendo.
The content of this video is very valuable. Quality like this is rarely found. It shows the _very_ fundamentals of kenjutsu in a masterful way. Shidachi and uchidachi's work is impeccable. Thanks KendoWorld.
I find this demonstration especially enjoyable. The focus from the girl on the right translates well from the video. She perhaps shows too much tension compared to the girl on the left but her control is spectacular. The girl on the left looks scared as hell in some of the plays. Their movement timing is very close to spot on. Some of the foot movement in the katana v wakizashi is sublime. Really impressive.
Having experienced attempting this kata sequence with bokuto(poorly, I’m still brand new to kendo), this video is absolutely breathtaking to watch. I nearly gasped at every strike.
These kata derive from kenjutsu. In fact, kendo is a modernized version of kenjutsu, in order to make it more "civilized" and more accessible to people. Personally, having trained in kendo for a few years, I do like this approach.
This isn't a match for points - it is the 10 Kendo kata. Each kata "begins" with the two participants on opposite sides of the room, getting ready, matching the opponent, sliding forward with 3 steps, and attacking or counterattacking. Left initiates, right follows. The kata teach strikes, timing, matching your opponent, spirit, kiai, and being exact. It's like a tea ceremony with swords.
I don't know much about Kendo, but it was so impressive to watch, such mastery and respect in every move. But are they really using real swords? Oo That's so amazing !
Composure, form, rhythm. It's a very different aspect of Kendo from typical shiai, almost like a dance. Takes great focus and practice for the level shown in video.
It’s a late response, but it’s 10 sets of fixed patterns to teach elements of swordsmanship. The sensei (teacher) is on the losing side (left) whereas the student is on the winning side (right). A lot goes into these sets, including maintaining the right distance and following the right footwork and movements.
I showed this to my girlfriend, explaining her what I'm doing at Kendo, and she was just hugging me and fearing for me to die. Not dangerous when done by experienced Kendokas (I'm just using wooden swords anyway), but she doesn't care

Its not about scoring points as such - make a mistake with a sword and you're maimed for life (as a minimum) - or dead. A fight in such circumstances would be over in seconds in reality. Have yo seen Iaido demonstrated? Theres a classic Iaido draw in film called "Sanjuro" which you might have seen? Probably a clip here on youtube.
It may well also be that the woman on the right is of higher grade, therefore the left girl is uchidachi (pardon my errors, it's been a long time since I last practiced kendo), which is the attacking sword. The woman on the right is the shidachi, the "winning" sword. These kata have a purpose, it's not about winning or losing. It's about control, determination and focus. A loss in a battle with these swords meant death not too long ago in Japan.
Sometimes you will watch higher ranked practicants using them at demos. Notice the clothes they are using, Those are not the regular uniform, but the formal exhibition ones. 99,9 % of the time you would be using bokken instead.
those kata's can execute with a bokuto, a iaito (unsharp blade) or a shinken (razorsharp blade). Those lady's are highly graduated so they might use real blades, a shinken or Nihonto. My advice don't do this at home, use a boken instead.

I don't know the first thing about Kendo but it seemed to me like the person on the left is throwing the battle and letting the other girl get hits. I don't know if that is supposed to happen for the purpose of the exercise or what, but that is what it looked like to me. I am used to karate where it is a lot more physical. It's strange to me to see them only take a few swipes and then start over. Obviously this is due to them scoring points. It just happens so fast.
very old comment, but i’d like to point out that this is not fighting, this is a choreographed performance. the one on the left is playing the role of the “teacher”, who is throwing to teach the student. the teacher always strikes first and the strike is redirected back at the teacher in 10 different ways.
Yeah I know what a kata is. We had those in karate was well. It is just performed a lot differently in karate. Our kata was made up of about 20 moves with kicks, blocks and punches and it was a scenario where you are fighting off 10 imaginary opponents at one time. Something to that effect.
Why? Just regular old kata, it's to show the principles and timing involved, the blunted swords serves to look more realistic and cool, but beyond that it's the same as with wooden swords

Impressive concentration, great balance, fluid movements. She made it look effortless.
This is so intense with the real swords, I swear I'm about to have a heart attack
It IS intense, but they are not using "real swords" (shinken), they are using a heavy-duty type of iaito called a kata yo.
tbh it doesnt matter if they are sharp or not... i dont know if you ever tried doing kata like this... striking with such force will cause serious injury if you fail... its really impressive
How can you tell if they're sharp or not?
You just don't want to destroy your shinken...also it is very dangerous to practice kendo kata with shinken. I hope this explanation is enough :)
Meh compared to the Western full contact theatre this really isn't that dangerous. Search up Wolin 2015
