To clarify why left is throwing the battle: On the left is uchidachi (instructor) who initiates the action and sets the pace, while allowing the shidachi to strike the winning blow. Uchidachi is a nurturing instructor who intentionally loses in order for shidachi to develop. The kata is not competitive nor a test of one's abilities. This role requires one to be humble and responsible because it embodies self-sacrifice of uchidachi in order to teach shidachi by offering guidance and education.

You express in exact words the essence of the teaching of Kenjutsu. That's exactly what budo is. That essence is being lost even in Japan.

Part of being able to pass your kata testing is the working together of two partners. If they don’t work together and aren’t on the same timing they will both fail their test.

  • @laughinggravy

This is Kata, an entirely scripted series of moves, used to demonstrate timing and precision. Each Kata tells a kind of story, with attacks, blocks and counters. Other elements of kendo are far more physical, and sparring especially so. By far the hardest art I've ever tried, in terms of 'getting it right', but that's what has kept me interested and attending! For me, it 'fitted' properly.

I find this demonstration especially enjoyable. The focus from the girl on the right translates well from the video. She perhaps shows too much tension compared to the girl on the left but her control is spectacular. The girl on the left looks scared as hell in some of the plays. Their movement timing is very close to spot on. Some of the foot movement in the katana v wakizashi is sublime. Really impressive.

These kata derive from kenjutsu. In fact, kendo is a modernized version of kenjutsu, in order to make it more "civilized" and more accessible to people. Personally, having trained in kendo for a few years, I do like this approach.

  • @MisterSithy
    @MisterSithy 12 лет назад +1

This isn't a match for points - it is the 10 Kendo kata. Each kata "begins" with the two participants on opposite sides of the room, getting ready, matching the opponent, sliding forward with 3 steps, and attacking or counterattacking. Left initiates, right follows. The kata teach strikes, timing, matching your opponent, spirit, kiai, and being exact. It's like a tea ceremony with swords.

It’s a late response, but it’s 10 sets of fixed patterns to teach elements of swordsmanship. The sensei (teacher) is on the losing side (left) whereas the student is on the winning side (right). A lot goes into these sets, including maintaining the right distance and following the right footwork and movements.

Its not about scoring points as such - make a mistake with a sword and you're maimed for life (as a minimum) - or dead. A fight in such circumstances would be over in seconds in reality. Have yo seen Iaido demonstrated? Theres a classic Iaido draw in film called "Sanjuro" which you might have seen? Probably a clip here on youtube.

It may well also be that the woman on the right is of higher grade, therefore the left girl is uchidachi (pardon my errors, it's been a long time since I last practiced kendo), which is the attacking sword. The woman on the right is the shidachi, the "winning" sword. These kata have a purpose, it's not about winning or losing. It's about control, determination and focus. A loss in a battle with these swords meant death not too long ago in Japan.

I don't know the first thing about Kendo but it seemed to me like the person on the left is throwing the battle and letting the other girl get hits. I don't know if that is supposed to happen for the purpose of the exercise or what, but that is what it looked like to me.
I am used to karate where it is a lot more physical. It's strange to me to see them only take a few swipes and then start over. Obviously this is due to them scoring points. It just happens so fast.

very old comment, but i’d like to point out that this is not fighting, this is a choreographed performance. the one on the left is playing the role of the “teacher”, who is throwing to teach the student. the teacher always strikes first and the strike is redirected back at the teacher in 10 different ways.

this is kenjutsu not kendo, right?

    • @k2lhu43

Why? Just regular old kata, it's to show the principles and timing involved, the blunted swords serves to look more realistic and cool, but beyond that it's the same as with wooden swords

No, this is the standard Kendo kata.

Remember it could b unsharpened for all we know. I wouldn't be surprised if they used unsharpened swords for safety

I know in demos I've seen up close they are usually done with iaito, or blunted shinken. While not 'sharp' They are still very dangerous.

Many years ago I played to be a samurai and chopped a strawberry in my hand like one and i cut myself. Thank God it wasn't a japanese knife or any other sharp as Trump's tongue knife.

They are probably using iaito or kata yo, not shinken. Not that a mistake wouldn't be painful, but far less "piss worthy" than a live blade.

why do they have to pause after every move? it makes the video unnecessary long and boring. ( besides the part where they actually do the techniques )

    • @ruleslawyer
      @ruleslawyer 6 лет назад +3

Because it is supposed to capture the intent of a real sword fight, not a movie fight scene. In each pause they are watching and evaluating their opponent.
