    Forward thinking council decision for such a young city. Quickest way to move large amounts of people efficiently. Also Goldie can’t be the “Surfer’s Paradise” anymore. This part of Australia now offers more than just tourism for employment and lifestyle, it’s becoming a globally recognised city and why not. Another great topic and informative short video. 🥇👍👍👍👍👍✌️

    No roasting, I just wanna thank you for a great sociological contribution, it's the kind of dialogue we should be hearing from council. Extremely refreshing that it's coming from Real Estate too, because that sociological perspective is the art that gets overlooked from that industry. Agents are supposed to have a wealth of knowledge on the pros and cons of the community as a whole, not just the dollars a property is worth. The worth comes from insights like yours.

    Getting to the airport can be a challenge that the light rail can fix. Buses don't have the capacity for coming years. Disraptions will be short term in comparison to the problems that will be experienced long term.

      Based on what? Less than 10% of airport users utilise public transport, and tram routes are less adaptive, meaning if people aren't going to the plethora of bus stops, they won't use the less available tram spots.
      The gold coast has very few affordable holiday options, so why would a higher socioeconomic demographic lower themselves to public transport when personal vehicles, rentals, or ubers are much more convenient?

      How long do you want to sit on a tram that has as many seats a 1 double decker bus ? The ride will take 1 hour and 50 minutes from Helensvale ,,, as such it is only a value as a local suburban interconnector and WILL NOT support airport growth via the greater GC Brisbane corridor

      @@shorey40because the light rail network so far has been wildly more successful than their initial expectations. The nimbies who were opposed to that by incorrectly claiming a reduction in property values saw the opposite happen.
      Like the rest of light rail network, this will be a massive success.

      @@shorey40 Thats the point. No one wants to get on a bus, why not get on a platform level vehicle instead of pulling your luggage into a bus. What are the other 90% of people using to get from the airport to where there staying. A tram is a lot more convenient for people compared to busses meaning higher transport usage, less cars on the M1 and highway overall better traffic for even regular car uses who couldnt give a crap about the tram

    I don’t live on the Gold Coast but I really hope the extension happens cuz the existing ligh rail is hugely successful.

      Its NOT a success by any critical measure ,,,, and the extension cost at 7 billions is equal to $106,000 for every resident on the southern GG south of Talle Creek. Or are you just part of the real-estate parasites making money ?

      As organized by SOSGC, i had the opportunity to join an hour long 8 person meeting with Mark Bailey in 2022 who on this point boasted the intended vision to convert the GC highway through Palm Beach into a traffic restricted pedestrian boulevard. Love or hate that idea,,, but sadly it was not backed with any real solutions to the reality of traffic necessity ,,, just typical inner city urban elitist soy latte sipping thought bubble ideology.

    Next tram stage has a simple and attractive alternative, south west to Burleigh West Stockland shopping centre.
    Then along West Burleigh Road via a short bored tunnel under Burleigh ridge from Mirikai to Fleays.
    From West Burleigh Road, beside the M1 to Stewart Rd, east to Tugun shops and then south along the Gold Coast Highway.
    The Gold Coast Highway south from the former highway connection at Tugun is wide enough to accommodate the quite wide light rail alignment.
    The 800 metre linear radius of near height unlimited development is best beside the M1 in this section as most of the eastern side of the Gold Coast Highway between Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creeks is less than a block from the ocean, reducing usable space.

      Yes there are far better public transport options. The current tram design has NOTHING to do with promoting viable public transport use and everything to do with creating a false ideology to drive urban uplift ,,, ironically of the highest socio economic group UNLIKLY to ever want to sit on a tram seat on a scale that justifies is huge cost.

      Putting it out there only makes it slower and longer and still has the same issues (going through the national park). It also is against the current arguements by nimbys of the southern gold coast where cost and the slowness of the system is the main arguement, and this is completely against it. 800 meter linear radius of unlimited height development is just not happening for one reason...
      there is a bloody airport...
      you cant put towers in front of where planes fly it wont go anywhere above 20 meters tall at all.

    I don't know why people keep trying to push trackless 'trams' as a new innovative technology when they hardly anything more than a bi-articulated bus. Buses are useful is low density but nothing beats the ability of rail when it comes to moving large amounts of people over land. Buses benefit from a dedicated corridor otherwise they just become embroiled in the same traffic as cars. Either way, extending the heavy rail connection from Varsity Lakes to the airport would have been better if the line actually connected people to places instead of avoiding the centre of the city.

    I don't think electric buses are the answer. It's not an either/or, you need electric buses, + the tramway, + good roads and new parking garages for park & ride or to replace the parking sports that were lost. The people who don;t want anything built are simply selfish "Ive got my piece of paradise and want to keep it all to myself".

      It's selfish to continue paving paradise. Fact of the matter is the southern gold coast can sustain the footprints being left right now, but the environment that draws people here cannot sustain being trampled on by the masses... This part of paradise is full.

      Buses regardless of fuel type are not a singular solution if they suffer the impact of car borne traffic. BUT a BUS form of transport like the Brisbane metro is NOT stuck on noisy rails and wires,,,, It is cheaper, flexible and can move around accidents and breakdowns ,,,, and can be scaled to specific destinations and events like concerts , air shows and festivals relevant to a so called tourist city. Go to Singapore and learn how our buses and their interface with users is still in the stone age

      Like old mate pointed out, LA. You been there? It's soulless. The Gold Coast and Northern Rivers is set in an extremely unique ecosystem and geography. The Wollumbin shield and its surrounding heritage rainforests have been here since Antarctica was part of Australia. It's the terminal point for the big scrub, which was sacred to Indigenous Australians quite literally all up and down the coast of Australia, a meeting place. That's what Burleigh was. It was a place to visit, very few families had access to the area. They were custodians so visitors didn't wreck the natural geography. It has forever been a place of natural beauty, there are far too many people obscuring that view. I actually agree with the rail, but only if they were taking care lanes away.

      @@shorey40 I don;t know LA that well (only been there about 30 times). I simply don;t care about indegenous cultrure or heritage. Why would you take away a car lane, some people don't want to use the train, or can't use it.

    People still have to get from A to B. The light rail is not going to take me to my yoga studio, favourite coffee spots or a massage treatment, doctor’s appointment etc. So we still need a car!?? As for tourists, I don’t think it’s going to have an effect either way.

      Correct,,, it has a basic value as a inter suburban connector ,,, but that minimal value comes at a HUGE price and COST. One cost being it will KILL any chance to extend the vastly faster and economically useful heavy rail. Its a basic economic FACT that Tom Tate cant and wont debate

      @@colinmay151 It wont kill it it will coexist as they both serve different purposes. Unless they build a new heavy rail spur to the city its useless for tourists or any holiday makers (going to or from the gc) going from the city to the aiport)

      Yeah its not a replacement for a car but its building up on what our busses currently cant do. Have enough capacity for their users.
      Some people need cars still no doubt but its a good alternative for many. If you really require going a to b and are too lazy to use a bike and take it with you or an e scooter your entitled to drive still its not going to be banned,

      @@xshar4 Light Rail will KILL fast Heavy Rail because if will become UNAFFORABLE due to the huge invest and debt due to Light Rail and desire not to create competition. Name one Australian airport that has both light and heavy rail ,,, NONE . Pls tell me where in Gold Coast IS the CITY Centre????

Your ability to scale and move your expected masses via the slow Tram mode with its limited and inflexible rail capacity means YOU STAND. Rember to be a gentleman and give your seat to elderly or a lady should you ever use it.

    I invite any of these pro Light Rail lecturing academics who profit from,,, (but am sure not motivated by) their GOVERNMENT study grants and Government lead task force positions to get out of the classroom and debate organizations like SOSGC on the reality of GCLR waste. Do they know the damage that GCLR 4 will do such as ensuring the vastly more important fast heavy rail extension is built . Go

    Trams do not equal development, development is caused from government policies allowing those types of buildings to be built there.
    It would be better to have a system there for in the future to take up population growth then to have a city with more cars on the road turning the touristic GC Highway into a traffic hellhole, it won’t feel like a ‘paradise’ if you have to sit in traffic for ages when driving up the coast.

      But in this case,,, the provision of these fixed route inflexible mode (18th century TRAM) with the same number of SEATS as a double decker bus are being used as a justification / tradeoff to increase density. The "build it and they will come" is a very crude unproven plan in this highest socio economic area. Reality needs to be considered

      Traffic remained the same when stage 1 open and has only increased. Trams do not reduce traffic.

      That is a YES,,,, BUT,,,, The BUT is that Buses alone,,, without improving the user experience, ride cost and timely consistency will not serve as the much needed incentive to motivate a lifestyle chance to public transport. We use cars to multi task / mufti destination per trip that is vastly more difficult, possibly impossible to achieve via public transport. Those who expose public transport in a city and culture such as the GC while looking at the success of other cities in Europe or Asia MUST first understand the lifestyle / behavioral differences

    Terrible decision. Could have run a mono rail and had the best of both worlds. Light rail will benefit few.
