Was fortunate to have seen Trognitz play for Toledo in the old IHL . That line of Trognitz , Tantardini ( RIP Paul ) and Mahood was wild to say the least and Terrible Teddy Garvin was only too willing to let them be wild.
I had the pleasure to work with Willie, In Search and Rescue in Thunder Bay, He was such a gentleman, He told me a lot of stories about his hockey career, His best story was when he was playing his first game against Mr. Hockey. He told me he went into the corner and checked Mr. Howe and next thing hr remembered was getting a famous elbow..He said he wanted nothing to do with Mr.Hockey. I only worked for one week with Will, and i must say off the ice he was a gentleman and a pleasure to know. Congrads on the save from a fellow shipmate
I remember Archie Henderson from the Binghamton Whalers. The next season he played for the Nova Scotia Oilers. In one game Ulf Samuelsson, who played for the Whalers, took a cheap shot at an Oiler ( shocker, I know.). The next game the teams played was in Binghamton, and Archie went after Ulf during the warm-up. This sparked a brawl which required the response of the Binghamton Police to stop. ( This usually only happened when the Rochester Americans came to town). Ray Ferraro has spoken of this incident.
Another outstanding story with a great happy ending. A couple of connections to my hometown of Calgary. Archie Henderson is from here and Gary Rissling played with the Calgary Cenrennials of the WHL.
A pair of good guys … met Rissling in PGH and Archie in HFD …. A buddy of mine was a rookie in the AHL and lined up next to Archie for the opening faceoff. Archie: “ I’m gonna carve your eye out, kid”
Another example of bringing attention to unheralded players who went on to make great contributions in other facets of society. Absolutely, a Canadian hero!
When I was a kid in the late fifties the parent Detroit Red Wings would come to Hamilton, Ontario to play an exhibition against their junior farm team the Hamilton Tiger Cubs at the old Forum. This was before the universal draft. My uncle would take me to the games. Nick Polano (mentioned here as a coach) played for Hamilton and was a fairly tough customer. They had Polano suit up for Detroit I believe because they were afraid that he would go after some Detroit players just to prove a point. Detroit had a lot of stars like Howe, Delvecchio, Ullman etc.. I recall they also swapped goalies for a period i.e. Terry Sawchuk in net for Hamilton. My greatest memory from that game was watching Terry Sawchuk in the warmup. Not only did he stop everything but seemed to be practicing redirecting the rebounds in different directions.
As an Aeros season ticket holder and referee for the youth hockey association I knew all of the minor officials that worked the Aeros games. One night one of the penalty box officials had been delayed and I was asked to work the visitors box until he showed up. The Aeros were playing the Cincinnati Stingers during the time Willie played 29 games with them and of course he was one the first in the box.
Holy cow! I never knew any of this! I'm talking about that "maniac", Archie Henderson! Haha! He was an easy going good natured dude with a great sense of humor-- I worked with him one summer on the weed control crew with the City of Calgary.
Is this the same Archie Henderson that played with the Hershey Bears late 70's early 80's? If it is he had his own fan club called Archie's Army. An enforcer , when he was put on the ice the crowd went wild and you knew someone was going to get hurt . Hershey won the Calder Cup often in those days
I saw Archie Henderson play for the Victoria Cougars many times. The Cougars played the New Westminster Bruins 6 times or so every season so, we got to know most of the players well and Archie was a huge fan favourite at Queens Park Arena in beautiful New Westminster. When he would step onto the ice the whole arena would start chanting "Aaaaarrrchie", we hoped it would be upsetting for him but I'm sure he probably loved it.
The sad thing about hockey is it’s always been a violent game , but in actuality it should be the best cleanest sports. Even in the helmetless era they still were chippy. Nothing but our Roman gladiator dna showing its lust for human violence.

Thanks … wild times in Toledo … must have been fun!
Great story, thank you for taking the time to share it with us.
Thanks very much …. We’ll keep producing them as long as you keep watching!
Love these videos

Great Comment ... Thanks for sharing your experience with Willie.
Love these videos and I make sure to catch every one. It's a wonderful thing to preserve the sports history and the heros and villains it's produced.
#18 wading into the stands (at 2:24) with Trognitz was my Father, Norm Park. Thanks for putting this together!
I love this story of redemption, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Considering you "run the world" your positive feedback means a lot!

Gary was a lunatic in Pittsburgh
Hilarious! I remember the Henderson’s from baseball. They were worse than Trognitz!
Very good presenter! I've been enjoying these videos all evening! I don't understand much about hockey so I am learning some things too!

Great video, great channel, do you have a video on Terry O'Reilly or Stan Jonathan?? Would definitely like to see that 👍
Not yet! But great ideas for potential subjects. THX

Thanks I just learned something today. And there's nothing like a story that has a happy ending.
Great video!
Thanks! You are doing a great job, my young brutha!

Love your videos and knowledge
As a Canadian… maybe Phil housley ?
Unknown and under appreciated US defenseman that was not huge in size
Bob "Battleship" Kelly was in Pittsburgh in the mid 70's .. and actually scored some big goals .. good times
We were at a WHA game in Edmonton and watched Trognitz and Greig fight Semenko and Jamie Troy. Those were the good old days!
Very nice story
Thanks for watching!

My buddy Kevin Morrison was on that 79-80 Fort Worth team, during the same year he was on the Colorado Rockies. Man, he's all over these.
Kevin Morrison is a legend … tough and talented
@@ProHockeyAlumni I say "my buddy" but it was my Dad he knew. Still, met him lots of times. Lots of great stories.
Thank you for profiling players we may never have known about otherwise and showing us a side of hockey that we may never have known or experienced

One of the most popular players in Toledo hockey history...Willie Trognitz...Doug Mahood and Paul Tantardini...kept a lot of IHL players honest
Murder, Inc.
good narration ...
Daves a killer! Also once met Paul Stewart as an official, he was a good ref.
If the game was boring, at least there were fights....I wish it were like that these days...in every sport!
I remember Willie when he played in Charlotte.
another great vid .never heard of this player
Glad you enjoyed -- and I'm glad to hear from you!
Sometimes people are far more than they appear to be. Good for the crew of the Grandpa Woo that Willie left hockey behind.
Could you do?

I used to watch Archie Henderson as a kid in New Haven
Archie, Archie, Archie!
I remember Archie Henderson when he played here in New Haven with the Nighthawks in the A.H.L. Couldn't play for shi-ite but was a real gentleman.
This is stuff of nightmares....those faces ......those faces. I can't get them out of my head!
It’s not where you start out. It’s where you end up.
Those were the days.

Victoria fans did the same thing to Harold Phillipoff of the Bruins.
So a rescue from the big lake they all call gichee gumee
Excellent.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down to the big lake they call…
The lake it is said never gives up her dead

i miss goon no helmet hockey
Goldie with a mullet!!!
Haha Thunder Bay got go get a Canadian at The InnTowner
Interesting.
Does this ridiculous WWF on blades still go on in these bush leagues?
for good or for bad, not really. Only some semi-pro leagues even come close, like LNAH.
Some of the wha teams were pretty much goons on skates, unlike the Jets who were winners because they brought in real players, who could score and play real hockey.
Kind of like some of the NHL teams in the early to mid 70s which were just about all Goons
The Flyers were a prime example, but got left in the dust, when better teams like the Islanders and Habs used finesse and real talent to win.
