I Failed My Tech Salary Negotiation - How I Lost 30K in 30 seconds

  • This is the story of how i gave the worst response of all time during salary negotiations at my first software engineering job. At the time, this amount was completely life changing and never in my wildest dream would I have ever imagined making this type of salary. Even so, i think I have a great lesson here on how NOT to lowball yourself. A side note, I might have also been the lowest paid senior software engineer in the whole bay area at the time.
Some of my favorite books that keep me motivate:
    LifeHacked: amzn.to/46OaUyH
    Zero to One: amzn.to/3PYLZ4P
    You Owe You: amzn.to/496VLdU
    about me:
My name is Jeff, I grew up in lower class as an Asian American and got bad grades my whole life. I found my path to real estate investing (2m+ in properties) and have a successful day job as a Lead Software Engineer all before 30. My goal is to share what I've learned in my 20s that helped me become who I am today. no sales, no tricks, no games. Just pure advice from someone thats seen both the bottom and the top in this modern world.

Its so easy to look back on your first job and think about how you could have negotiated for more. 130k is a fantastic place to start right out of a boot camp, especially when you don't have another offer to use as leverage. My first salary out of a boot camp was much lower. Comparing your salary to your coworkers is important, but not for the sake of beating yourself up retroactively for not asking for more. If your coworkers are making more than you, it's your sign to look for greener pastures and ask for more.

I appreciate the engagement. Definitely, even till this day i think about how lucky am to have gotten that job. It changed my life as i mentioned in the video.
With that said, I think it was a good example of the game of salary negotiations and what happens when you got zero skills and leverage in that sector.

technically, a 100% of the people asking 165k didn't get the job so they got $0. You got in. Your 135k has more value than a hypothetical number that no one will get. You also will get that number later so no biggy. Compared to where you were before, that's awesome and more than the 100k you had in mind. Life changing as you put it. Great video!

I'd still negotiate that offer and say " at the time I didn't understand the full extent of the tasks and duties" until I spoke to the hiring and technical team.

thanks for your story! it would be interesting to see your methodology of negotiating offers... like what questions would you ask, how would you direct the conversation once you're asked THE QUESTION.. :)
    - what is your salary expectation?
    - what is the budget for the position? is there a sign-up bonus? are there bonuses on top of the pay? things like that. Would be interesting to hear your perspective as someone who learned all of this through personal experience

I feel your pain. My first tech job I was paied $30k a year, no vacations, no benefits, no bonuses, no raises, etc... I was paid this for 4 years. I am being paid $68k, with vacation, benefits, etc... I am still below market value, but better than my first tech job. Negotiating is very difficult for me. I seem to fail everytime at it.

Bro you changed my life bro, on the 8th of january bro. Total trajectory change. Seeing just a normal guy talk about life with his ups and downs just decompressed me entirely. I felt so overwhelemd and unhappy. Im gonna name my first son after you bro.

I'm 2+ years into a fortune 500 tech company, several CRM certifications, currently doing BA work only making $70k because I'm out in Texas. So tempting to move to CA for those wages lol, but I know the cost of living is much worse out there.
