Three days in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. Yep. That would cure what ails me. Because, you see, I had a fever, and the only prescription was photographing some saguaro cactuses. I can't explain it, but I was itching for months to go photograph some of these beautiful cactuses.
In my home state of California, saguaros are virtually nowhere to be found. That's because saguaros are unique to the Sonoran desert - not the Mojave desert, not the Colorado desert, but the Sonoran desert. And where can a young California boy like myself go to find a piece of the Sonoran desert? Arizona. That's where.
I love me some Arizona. It's a wonderful state. I would argue that Arizona has some of the most unique natural features of any state in the country. You got the Grand Canyon, you got Horseshoe Bend, you got saguaros, you got birds rising from the ashes...it's a hell of a state.
With my various cameras in tow - my Mamiya RZ67, my Shen-Hao TFC 617-A, my 4x5, my Mint Camera SLR 670-S, and even my Canon EOS 6D - I set out for a piece of public land southwest of Phoenix to stake my tent. I used maps as best I could to pick a good spot ahead of time, but when you're venturing into BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land, you really don't know what you're getting into until you get there. My initial campsite picked out on a map didn't pan out - just couldn't get to it - so I explored a nearby area in hopes it would offer what I was looking for. Luckily it did.
Over the next 2 nights, I would put some Kodak Portra 160 through my Mama RZ67, some Ilford Delta 100 in my 4x5, shoot some panoramics on my 6x17, play with my polaroid SLR 670-S, and even do some fun light painting with my Canon 6D. The light painting ended up being my favorite part of the trip. I haven't done much of it before, so I felt a little like a kid discovering candy for the first time.
Good times.
Be sure to check out part 2 of this video series from the Sonoran Desert.

I don't normally get jealous of other photographers. You've changed all that.
canturgan haha. Well I tend to get jealous of all photographers. So welcome to my world!
I'd love to see the faces of some distant campers (if there were any) as they saw pops of colour in the middle of the desert at night!
Those night shots are amazing.
stevenlennie thank you!
dude you killed it with this man. Pure entertainment
and inspiration
David Rothschild thanks a lot man! I appreciate it
That was an event! Not only taking pictures! Thanks!
Nick another great video series, love the beautiful photography and scenery . You nailed the saguaro cactus, Iespecialy like your sense of humor! Tjks for sharing.
This man deserves an oscar for the Blair Witch interpretation, bravo!
Ha! I'd like to thank the academy.
You tricky devil!! The multiple colored gels were awesome!!! It was interesting to see your desert palace set-up also.
man I have been shooting film for 8 years. just as an avid hobbyist, thank you. such great content. Ive been on a tear all month, one video after another
This was great to watch Nick, the flashed cactus looked like great fun and the shots are ace. Thanks for sharing sir.
david jones thank you very much!
As you were running through the night desert, I kept thinking, "Don't run into a cholla! Don't run into a cholla!" 😬
Never a dull moment with your content Nick! You’re still my favorite so far. Thanks for all the effort!
Adam Pamungkas thank you very much!
The Les Stroud of photography!
Hell yeah I like that!
Just found your channel from Thomas Heaton!! I love your content!!!!
Awesome almost an hours worth of videos. Great stuff man.
Bill Pickle thank you very much!
Love these longer videos!!! Keep up the great uploads!
TheFishboy50 thank you! And I appreciate the comment about the length. Trying to make sure I don't go too long or too short.
The four colored cacti.....man, just another shot I can honestly say I WISH I had taken. Great concept/execution....RESULTS.
I understand. Space, reflection, and the art of photography.
Very good video. I’m really impressed by the methodology of the picture taken drills and the good quality of the pictures. Excellent tent as well.
Roberto Gonzalez thank you very much.
I really hope your channel blows up, you have awesome tips for photographers, do incredible work and the content quality is second to none in photography vlogs.
Loved watching as always! Always look forward to your videos.
Bryan Brooks thank you very much!
Another awesome episode Nick inspirational stuff cheers 📷📷
what an awesome shoot. I didn't think that anything would catch my attention as much as Houston Liquors but I really love the outcome of those night time photos!
Been waiting for a new video! Recently stopped by Route 66 area with my Mamiya 7II and got a fresh breather away from the South Bay. Keep inspiring Nick! Thank you!
Love your videos Nick! Carry on the good work!
Thank you! Will do!
Just recently started watching your RUclips channel and I love the way how you present your content. Very laid back and chilled vibe.. I'm inspired to get out and do some night time photography :) Hello from Australia :)
I'm so glad I ran into your channel mate. I'm not a "landscape" guy, but it is growing in me lately, and although I don't share your preference in gear, I find this channel very informative. If you see any peak in views from Lebanon, that will be me :) keep creating.
Nash Suleiman that's awesome man thank you! And I'm glad to know the videos are still worth watching for viewers like yourself who aren't necessarily into the weird camera stuff like I am.
man.. I love these videos... quickly becoming my favourite on ewe toob
Joshua Vince I am very glad to hear that. Thank you!
Great! Learn, Fun, wunderfull Landscapes and pictures, old Film-Kameras = for me the best Entertainment for now.
Godsamnit Nick Carver, you damn good video maker. Always good to see an upload or two from you.
Hogarth Ferguson haha. This is my favorite comment yet.
It actually said "goddamnit Nick Carver, you damn good beautiful video maker..." but I didn't want you to think I was hitting on you.
Stumbled across this channel and glad I did.
Wow amazing shots man! The night shots were so cool. Glad I found your channel. Your videos are informative and you're a fun dude. Love it. MTV Cribs part made me laugh real good. Thanks for sharing.
the night time pictures are sick! Awesome video, I'm off to part 2 now :D
KATHRIN thank you very much!
One of the best photography channels on RUclips - period! And the fact that it’s about shooting film is just icing on the cake 😊
I’ve got a fever - and the only prescription is more cowbell.... er, I mean ,saguaro. Classic Nick.
Another awesome video! Nothing beats a Mamiya RZ67.
William Santagata it's a damn great camera.
Very cool to see you doing some night photography. There’s a local (to me) photographer here in NC named Kevin Adams who does some really creative night stuff (light painting with waterfalls, etc). Really nice guy too. His blog is called Digital After Dark in case you’re interested. But man, giving us an hour of content at one time... huge thank you! Please keep it coming :)
Todd Hurley thanks a lot man! Yeah some guys out there are wizards with the whole night photography stuff. It's impressive.
That's a lot of FUN!!!!! Great video!
Another great and informational video. Love it!!
Sack Pephirom thank you!
Love every video Nick! Really inspiring to just get up and shoot
Always love the videos! Might need to invest in one of those heaters. I'm always afraid of tent catching on fire when I would be sleeping, though I do have a much smaller tent. Look forward to the next video!
Bobby Gibbons thank you! Yeah I was very concerned about using it the first few times, but I think they're safer than most people think they would be.
Really enjoyed watching this video
waynedobie thank you!
I watched this video last night, fell asleep and missed the part where you took your Canon. I woke up at 16:44 in the video was mind blown with the photos you've got with the Mamiya🤦
Anyway, I just remembered it now and though it was a dream. Looked up the video and all makes sense now!
So good man! As always, so stoked to see your work pop up on my subscription list and then BAM two long videos.. keep it up amigo! Great night shots too by the way!
Fernando Rodriguez thanks so much man! Comments like these make the effort worth it.
You should come down South of Tuscon & check out Cochise Stronghold and the Chiricahua Mtns. Especially during Monsoon season. There's also a few ghost towns out here as well.
Great work! Loved both of your videos!
Matthijs Mackaay thank you!
your impression of saguaro cactuses is golden! loved the video so much, great night shots too!
This was so awesome. I was afraid you were going to run into a cactus at some point lol. Your videos are great.
12:06 🤭 I was thinking about those light they use for diving. What you could do. 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭
We waited. Good video. Thank you.
Already left a comment on part two, but have to say it again: Thanks - great stuff!
Massimo Fiorentino thank you sir! I really appreciate it.
Hey, Nick FII I got here via a link from Thomas Heaton's channel. I like this on so many levels, and since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I'll tell you some of the things I'm going to do: take advantage of BLM land, use colored gels for night photography, get the same tent you use, the heater, and the cot. And since I'm 74, I cannot be a fanboy, but how 'bout a fan geezer. Thanks for the video.
Great stuff, good to have you back!
Good to see you back! I'd guess that you've been rather busy these past several months, which is a good thing. But it's bad for those of us who enjoy your videos. I absolutely love the Sonoran Desert! In fact, I'd live in Arizona if it weren't for having so much family here. Prescott & Page are two of my favorite towns and areas. You gotta love the big Mamiyas! I shoot the RB67 because I like the mechanical aspects of that beast. I can't imagine shooting that big 360 handheld! Ouch! Looking forward to watching your next video in this series!
John Wilkinson thank you very much! Yeah there are some great towns in Arizona. The RZ67 with the 360mm is no lightweight! I usually put that beast on a tripod.
Really love these trip videoes! And the photos you take are amazing!
Awesome video Nick! Handheld RZ is no problem, I do that too sometimes!
it's such a long time that I've been waiting for your video
You could employ the 500 rule for astro photography which is to divide 500 by the focal length of the lens to obtain the shutter speed, keep the lens wide open on infinity and the stars shouldn't be moving. While that's going on you can fill flash for foreground interest.
Enjoy your videos.
"you got birds rising from the ashes" Also loved the Blair Witch reenactment lol
Arcana73 ha. Thanks! I didn't think anyone ever read the descriptions!
@@nickcarverphoto just had throw out an update: I haven't been on a backpacking trip in a few weeks due to winter happening up in NY. So I decided I too have a fever for saguaro trees, and booked me a flight to Phoenix and then heading to the Superstition Wilderness. Even if its "cold" there, it will be warmer than Buffalo.
so much fun to watch your channel!
Great content Nick!
Very nice Nick! I was so hoping you'd found Bigfoot
Juan Patricio ha! That would be the best thing to ever happen to my RUclips channel, but the worst thing to ever happen to my underwear.
No doubt!
Can you tell me the brand etc of the filters you used to color the saguaros? I am assuming you used your portable flash. My favorite was the four cactii lit up in different colors. Great video!
I am awed by the production quality of your videos. I know what a total PITA it is to set up a camera, walk out, walk back, edit, etc. but I always feel like I'm watching a commercially made film. And the imagery you shoot is cool too.
Krish Mandal thank you very much, my friend. I'm not as fancy as I could be (no drone shots, no slider shots, etc), so I'm really glad to hear it still looks good.
Great video truly entertaining!
Is that the Black Diamond Storm 375 headlamp? Is it worth the money?
I did the worlds longest ‘Yeah Boi’ when you tweeted this out
Stephen Lloyd hahaha! So awesome. Thanks man!
Haha! Man, this is a great video. As a fellow Orange County dweller, I sympathize with the need to get out of town.
Heath L Barbier thank you sir! Yeah...it can't feel a little cramped around here.
I have only recently found your channel after Ben mentioned you in a video, must say it has become one of my favourite photography RUclips channels, the only problem after watching many of your videos I now lust after a film camera in fact I am watching a Fuji GX617 on eBay now being a Pano fan, I think this could get expensive quick.
You just became my favorite youtube photographer man.
Alfredo Cristinziano awesome!! Thank you!
Your tent setup looks amazingly cozy. It must be great to have a nice big clean space, and is also handy for doing video!
Ben Horne amen to that. I'm done with ultra-compact cold-ass tents.
this was sick!
you are a genius
Dude! Such a great video. Awesome photos as well. Keep at it!
Awesome video man!
tpalen20 thank you!
Loved the video! And the jokes!!
Michael Neglia I'm glad! Thank you!
Great video! I have a question. You said the spot you originally planned to camp at was inaccessible or didn't have the views you thought it would. How did you find the first spot? Previous trip? Google Earth? BLM maps? Thanks. Keep shooting!
Hey Nick, Only came across this video late - anyway to say - that I too want to welcome you to Fuji Club as well. ;^D.. Fum AU.
Always nice to see some content mate, quality over quantity is the key.
tallaganda83 I feel the same way, but I need to keep hearing that. Thank you!
Awesome night shots ! Would you mind sharing in detail your flash settings ? thx
very JR thanks! 1/4 power on the flash. Then you can count the number of bursts on each cactus in the video.
LOL. Californians thinking 26F is cold. Nice video, like your mannerisms, subscribed.
A 60 degree temperature swing in moments will certainly feel cold no matter where you're from.
Awesome video, Nick! What kind of flash and gels are you using?
The flash is a Canon 580 EX and the gels are from an old Cokin variety pack I had laying around.
Amazing tour de force with the night photos! Doing this with multiple images and blending in Photoshop might be a bit less likely to break your ankles. 🙄
Cactus are. Throwing a party
Hey Nick, great video and excellent pictures! One question: Do you shoot the portra at box speed iso 160 or do you overexpose? Thanks!
Dude what a great channel, your videos are so informative, thank you. Can I ask what speed light and gels you use?
What night vision camera do you have Nick? Love your work.
Those night images was great! Btw, don´t you have a weapon to protect yourself. All persons and animals aren´t nice guys.
Love your stuff man!
Daniele Zedda thank you!
What camera(s) do you use for the night vision shots of everything your doing in the dark?
Doesn't a propane heater produce carbon monoxide? Is that safe to use inside a closed space?
I had the same concern, which is why I always bring a carbon monoxide detector with me. I've never had it go off.
cool video, do you shoot any Milky Way?
At least all you have to worry about is cayotes, at the moment I'm stting in the bush with my telescope doing some imaging... and I smell the very strong scent of cougar piss right now.
Really good stuff, Nick! But seriously, do you ever get a good night’s sleep?
The heater in the tent is nice, but isn‘t it dangerous because of carbon monoxide?
Saguaro cactus are called the Soldiers of the Desert
What ? No cars parked in front of the Saguaros?
oh man, makes me wish I didn't move back east from Arizona as there are so many shot ideas I'd love to try. Ugh... ready for winter to be over with, here. Thanks for the putting the time into these videos. Very well done. Look forward to the next! See any scorpions?
John Daly you won't miss it in about 5 months from now. Haha. I love Arizona so much but I couldn't be there in the summer. At least not southern AZ. And luckily no scorpions on this trip. Oh yeah you guys are getting hit hard on the east coast this winter!
Careful using fuel burning heaters in an unvented/enclosed space.
If you want to see eyes at night in the desert . Park your truck or camp on a hill or rise so you can see out over the desertand a few hills.
Middle of the night while being quite turn on your forward 4x4 lights.
It will look like x-mas tree eyes from mice up to bobcat to coyotes you can even see the big predators trotting along looking back and forth at you while hunting on there way.
The desert comes alive at night.
