As others have stated, this is John Rutsey on drums. Can you imagine what this did to us teenagers the 1st time we heard it 48 YEARS ago?! Was mind blowing.
They played this song at my high school in 74 in fact almost most of this album. Blew us away we were hooked. 50 years later and still a Rush fan!!!!!
John Rutsey pounds the sticks, Geddy rips the bass, but Alex … Alex friggin’ Lifeson … absolutely shreds the sh*t outta this song. So so good! 🔥🤙
Yeah I think Alex was ahead of Geddy musically at this time in their career, then later Geddy became godlike
This was the most epic unforced guitar solo. It was the song. The lyrics almost seemed forced 😂
@@andyburch1819 The faster part of the song is indeed the highlight of the song but I think it was the lyrics that made it a small hit and put Rush into the map.
You should see the version of this song, Working Man Live in Cleveland. It is unbelievable!
EVERY TIME I hear a Rush song, that’s my favorite Rush song..🤣😂
Neil joined Rush on their 2nd album. This is John Rutsey.
Thank you for reacting to this for me. I saw this live a few times, awesome live. Great reaction, it's what I was hoping for, to make your ears happy!
They are like no other and Niel Peart like John Bohnam is irreplaceable. George is right. If you know, you know. When I was in high school, we used to wrap our hardback books with paper bags and write Rush lyrics and Rolling Stones tongues and everything Rock and Roll all over the covers! If anyone remembers that, give me a thumbs up!
Not Neil on this album, he came after this one.
Yup! And besides doodling "Zeppelin Rules!" and "2112" and whatnot on the covers, we expressed our loyalty with t-shirts and even 9as I often did) bringing a boombox in to jam out with during 10-minute breaks and lunch hour and on the bus, lol!
Drummer was John Rutsey... At this time.
RusH was composed of 3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands.
Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.
🎸Such an amazing song and band sad the drummer passed away guy was absolute MONSTER drummer 🥁🥁💯
Guy's, you haven't even begun to scratch the surface of the 3 man musical genius that is the band "Rush"! Listen guys I don't want to get to long winded here but you two haven't even put your shoes on yet to start the trip down the rabbit hole. Rush is over 40 years of making music! Their two most acclaimed albums "2112" and Moving Pictures" you haven't listened to anything off of those two albums yet with the exception of "Tom Sawyer" off of " Moving Pictures". Try not to put these 3 exceptional musicians on the back burners, dig alittle deeper guys you won't regret it. Love the channel, totally support you guy's, peace out! 👍🇺🇸🔥🎸😎
THANK YOU Kathy for saying this. You said exactly what I was thinking. You know, I’ve always considered myself to be “THE” #1 RUSH fan alive today.😅.Could it be - that I’ve just come across my RUSH-soulmate here on RUclips!?? 😃 I hope the brothers will take your advice.
@@gingeroo5765 thank you for the kindness. There is just to much about Rush that has to be listened to before you determine if you like them or not just from the few songs that the brothers have heard! At the very least listen to the albums I mentioned before you draw an unbiased opinion! Just sayin! Peace out all you Rush fans out there! 👍🇺🇸🔥🎸😎
@@kathyfarrow309 TOTALLY get what you’re saying but can I just say, I was HOOKED after the first song. With RUSH I’ve always felt that (typically- not always) a person either “gets” them or they don’t.. and it’s usually pretty quickly. I really have never come across a mediocre RUSH fan. BUT, I did see 1 person who didn’t DISLIKE them at first, but took some growing into - to acquire their taste for them. But, those have just been My experiences.
And by the way, I heard all the early digs at Geddy’s voice.. the Donald Duck on helium etc. , but I just dismissed them and as a matter of fact, I’ve been IMMENSELY impressed with how beautifully his voice has matured and mellowed. It’s really wonderful. SO sad they’ll never play as the threesome ever again. I know things can’t last forever but he and Alex are STILL to this day extremely quick and capable- SOO seasoned and I just hate the thought of ALL that talent lying dormant. I don’t know if you had a chance to catch any of Taylor Hawkins’ tribute concerts but RUSH made a guest appearance and tore it up as expected. They had a couple fill-in drummers of course and Dave Grohl was one of them. I’m sure you probably saw it. C’est la vie though. It’s just the way it has to be. At least we have all their recorded music to live on forever.❤️🔥
@@gingeroo5765 thank you for the dialogue. You sound like someone I could sit down with maybe have a drink, perhaps smoke alittle social lubricant and talk "Rush" for hours. I remember having these conversations with a select number of my friends. I'm from the midwest where Rush were rock royalty. I appreciate talking Rush with anybody that will give me the time of day, and I truly enjoy watching folks who are listing for the first time. Peace out untill next time! 👍🇺🇸🔥🎸😎
This is a great song from Rush, I do love Geddy Lee's voice! The band formed in Toronto, in 1968 and what a fantastic sound from this so talented three-man group!! I believe it was the original drummer who played on this song not Neil Peart. He joined the band in 1974, a few months after the release of their debut album. I love listening to your discussions, guys, we all pick up different elements from songs, different points of view, that's what it's all about and that's what makes reactions so interesting! Thanks so much for reacting to this fabulous Rush song. By the way, I've watched your reaction to the Neil Peart Drum Solo Live in Frankfurt quite a few times, I just love it, both the video and your reaction! Take care now, guys and all the best.😊👍
Working Man was the song that broke Rush's career wide open. It all started when Donna Halper, former music director for radio station WMMS in Cleveland, brought in a copy of their debut album, and put it on while she went for a bathroom break; Cleveland was mainly a factory town in the 1970s, so the lyrics instantly resonated with the listeners, and then they caught the attention of Mercury Records, who signed them to their first record deal. As mentioned above, the Cleveland performance from their Time Machine Tour is pure fire; for Limelight, which is my favourite Rush song and features more of Alex's best guitar work, I recommend the official music video, which was filmed right in the recording studio; and for another hidden gem on the flipside of 2112, I recommend A Passage To Bangkok. Cheers from Canada!! 🇨🇦
🎤 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥
Got to see them on the Moving Pictures tour in 82 best $5.50 i have EVER spent.
This song rocks! Love the way the song ends. So fun to hear the early roots of Rush, even before Neil Peart. Interesting observations about the guitar tone. Thanks guys for the reaction!!
It never fails: When Alex Lifeson breaks into that bright, sassy lead - the tonal quality is identical to much of Tony Iommi's work with earlier Sabbath. It's a wonderful experience.
SO Much RusH for you guys to discover...!!!
"Lessons", "Jacob's Ladder" "Something for Nothing", "Natural Sciences",
"Closer to the Heart"... And many many more...
Bro's, you'll love their 'Limelight", "Closer To The Heart", "Trees" and "Circumstances"!!!! You're only 4 songs into this amazing 3 man band!
i have been waiting for a long time to see u guys hear this -this KILLED US when it came out the first time i heard it i went to buy the album i was open mouthed -the entire first rush album was considered as HARD as it got back then!!! it was BLASTED AT EVERY PARTY!!! i saw them open for faces with rod stewart at the time and they ROCKED INDIANAPOLIS -played the whole first album!!!1 THIS I KNOW YOU WILL FEEL WHAT I FELT IN HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR YEAR!!1 THIS IS THE MEANING OF ROCK -A STANDARD TO MEASURE BY....FOR YEARS NOW.....
I'm sure it was great live, Rush is always great live, but this album is quite a dud in my opinion.
i saw rush many many times over the years the best was 2112 tour it was ridiculous and my third time seeing them the 1st half was 2112 start to end i believe it was at that show i saw people crying in the audience when they did HERE AGAIN
Please review Rush Working Man live in Cleveland. MIND BLOWN.On this first album it was not Neil Peart. It was John Rutsey .Neil joined the band after this album. The live version in Cleveland has Neil Peart on drums and was in 2011 when they were in there 50's and after playing after 3 hours. It was the encore.Enjoy the ride.
Seen Rush 3 times over my 40 years of growing up with them.
Rush is Timeless
No, Neil is not on this album, but this album should not be overlooked. Every track on this album is incredible. What a way to start out a career!
Please do 2112 by these guys! Yes its 20 minutes but its a rock opera and has many, many transitions, riffs, and solos. One of the best things out of the 70's by far.
You WON'T regret it. AT ALL.
This is early Rush. You two need to react to more Rush, you are missing out on some great stuff!
Alex, Geddy and John ( the original drummer here) are only 19/20 years old and already this amazing. Neil replaced John just before the tour for this album started. The 3 of them only got better and better over the next 40+ years. 🎸🥁🎸 🐐🐐🐐
One of the best guitar solos in my opinion. I had my mother listen to it when it came out. She raised her eyebrows and said it was pretty jazzy. lmao
I prefer Alex's solos that are more original and interesting. This, just seems like showing off in the style of Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin. From the interviews that I have seen, Geddy and Alex agree.
@@squaaaaak3178 yep. I like all kinds but I don't consider it showing off any more than I consider Iomi or Page showing off within the contexts of most of the BS and LZ recordings. There are a lot of people, including schooled and professional musicians who aren't adrenaline junkies and aren't into high octane rock which is what this lead section is.
I thought it was heavily influenced by the Iron Man solo the first time I heard it and I also consider that solo to be one of the best (given the point in time it came out).
In this realm of soloing, I prefer Michael Shenker's solo work on Strangers In The Night.
Alex's solo on Analog Kid is also one of my favorites. I like it how it moves on down the road.
But I like everything he does with the guitar.
And I also don't care that much about what the artists say about their own music. They are like the rest of us. Their memories and their views change. There are a lot of artists who didn't even want to record or thought some of the greatest hits ever made were trash in the studio. The artists are not the judges of their own work. Doesn't really matter if they like it or not. lol
I give credit to this song for keeping me half sane for the godaweful 3 1/2 years in Hawaii. A band that played at a nearby bar/nightclub would play this and nail it. Giving me a reason to live
If you do the first side (yep, the entire 20-minute side, lol!) of their album "2112," THAT would be your new fav Rush "song," I would think! Or get the same result--a new fav Rush song--from "Red Barchetta" or "Beneath, Between, and Behind" or "Subdivisions" or "Cinderella Man" or "Fly By Night" or "Circumstances" or "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" or "Closer to the Heart" or "The Trees" or "Free Will" or "What You're Doing" or...well, you get the idea--they have a LOT of FIRE to offer you guys!
Thank GOD you grabbed the original. That new version is one of the biggest injustices a group did to their own song. I keep wanting to see you guys react to "Poem 58" by Chicago. You really are missing out until you hear it.
Great drumming ...just not by Neil Peart, who replaced the OG drummer, right after the album with this song on it was released.
Now to add the cherry 🍒 on the top do working man live in Cleveland this is the ult 🔥 .watch three guys in their 50s end a three hour concert . This goes in three transitions from medium to outright fire 🔥
John Rutsey was a great drummer. Heavy handed......just like I like 'em.
In case you haven't yet, try these songs: "Passage To Bangkok", "Fly By Night", "Tom Sawyer", "Trees", "Red Barchetta", "Distant Early Warning", "Freewill" and "2112", all are very good songs. Working Man is one of my favorites. This group is incredible , they make an amazing sound considering the fact that they're a 3 man group! Thanks for this awesome reaction!
Hi there, so far, apart from today's song, they have reacted to Tom Sawyer, YYZ (Live at Rio), The Spirit of Radio and Neil Peart Drum Solo (Live in Frankfurt). All brilliant and great reactions! 😊
John Rutsey on drums, not Neil Peart
This first album hit me like a meteorite
Now you need to compare this version to the version they did in Cleveland when they were in their 50's! Epic!!!
This got me into RUSH about '75 when I was 14.
I heard this when it first came out and was hooked. Moved from Chicago to Phoenix in 75 and tried to find this album at every record store in the Phoenix area. Nobody heard of them and thought I was making them up. Oh Tom Rush you're thinking of, Mahogany Rush, NO!. Anyways my neighbor down the street had this album, Fly By Night, and Caress of Steel. Shortly after that it seems Phoenix caught on. It's no wonder they have a cult like following.
I saw them twice they were the best ever
Amazing what sound comes from a 3 man group, right?
3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands.
Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.
One of the most hard-driving riffs, ever.
This song belongs to Alex Lifeson.
Original drummer here... not Neil Peart.
John Rutsey was the drummer here. He played excellent during his time with early RUSH. Rip John.
John Rutsey
Wow, insane drums and guitar! I agree with both of you on this one - ha😊Great way to start the weekend! Thanks so much guys, be safe🧡
Next is to venture to Little Feat. You won't regret it.
@@brendataylor3075 Ha yes Brenda, Little Feat takes us waaay back🙂
Something for you two to visit sometime later: the live version of this song from their Time Machine tour- the video for this is often referred to the "Cleveland" version.
Alex KILLED IT.They all did.
DEFINITELY watch the live version in Cleveland!!
Drums?? LOL, yeah, they're great, but that ain't "Uncle Neil," haha. It's their first drummer, who was great, but no Peart. But I would argue the member you should be freaking out over is "Uncle Alex" (Lifeson) on the guitar! My God what fast yet fluid playing! ANd of course Geddy on the bass and with the vocals. This song loosely reminds me, in its structure, drama, and overall kick-assness, of Zeppelin's "Dazed & Confused."
John Rutsey on drums.
2112 is worth exploring for sure.
RIP JERRY LEE LEWIS
Great reaction. This is a great song and it was the song that really got their career going. This is their first song that got substantial radio play and got radio play in the states. The drummer on this first studio album was John Rutsey. John was a good solid bluesy rock drummer however due to health problems he was replaced in 1974 for the tour of this album. Neil Peart only had like two or three weeks to learn all of the songs and practice with Geddy and Alex before the tour started. Now that you have heard the original studio version of this song you should really react to the live in Cleveland version with Neil it is amazing.

Seems you boys love to rock, but can't find where you've did any Outlaws. Must try them. I recommend "The Outlaws"-"Green Grass and High Tides" Live at Capitol Theatre 1978.
Now go check out the R30 LIve in Cleveland version!
Need to listen and watch live version in Cleveland.
Now watch the live version in Cleveland.
Great.
rush - subdivision
Just a little Jimmy Page influence there. People like to say Alex is somehow under-rated, but no. Every decent player knows he's an all time top 10 rock guitarist (and a huge influence on me).
Listen to the band Crucis,CD Los Delírios Del Mariscal music Abismo Terrenal
do the ORIGINALS suggested below from the first album not live and you will see why it is considered one of the best debut albums of all time
🔥🔥🔥
try-FINDING MY WAY! try it was also on the radio also IN THE MOOD- also another classic from this album you will love is called HERE AGAIN it is different and completely a classic can make you swallow hard at least for me ...
A Canadian rock
Next should be Roll the Bones.
Wrong version, life in Cleveland
Deffo
TRUE. Except they get Geddy's voice before he ages and it changes.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Listen to the band Omega CD 1973
Not Neil it’s there first drummer
John Rutsey, not Neal Peart.
I know. Drums was an embarrassment of riches for Rush.
Listen to the band Judas Priest CD Sin After Sin
Still no Sabaton , no Floor Jansen , no Powerwoolf
There was nothing wrong with John Rutsey as a drummer. He was phenomenal.
But unfortunately his replacement was Neil Peart.!!!
It's like Kobe Bryant being followed by Michael Jordan. Lol
A good song, but not one of my Rush favorites. They have so many great ones.
this song in live version will blow your mind... much much beter than this
You can't be serious. The drums are pedestrian at best on this song, and of course is not Neil Peart. The music is very derivative, although future greatness can be predicted.
