The island of Cavallo (in Corsican: Cavaddu or Cavallu) is an island in the Bocche di Bonifacio, between Sardinia and Corsica, in French waters.
It is located north of Lavezzi, and is connected to it by a stretch of sea with many shoals. It is a private island, characterized by the presence of many houses designed by the French architect Jacques Couelle. It is still an exclusive destination that often sees the presence of numerous personalities. The Savoys have a villa there. It is the southernmost inhabited area of ​​metropolitan France and depends administratively on the Corsican municipality of Bonifacio. You can land on the island only if you own a house or if you are a guest of someone.
Like the nearby island of Lavezzi, it is part of the Bocche di Bonifacio Nature Reserve, which together with the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park will form the international park of the Bocche di Bonifacio.
Even in the seventeenth century the island kept its complete name of "Horsetail", that is the same as the equally well-known north-eastern coastal town of Sardinia, and it is very unlikely that it is a casual homonymy; evidently those seas were once teeming with that fish which is called in Greek ἲππoυρος ('horsetailed'), in scientific terminology "corifene ippuro", and in vernacular Italian precisely "horsetail". It is a fish that stands out for its bright colors and which, being well known in the Tyrrhenian Sea, assumes a multiplicity of names (“…On the coast of Genoa dorade rondamino; lampugo in Spain; dolphin in England; dorado in several other parts of Europe.
