Just like H.L.Mencken once wrote: American heroism in battlefield has always been rare compared to American cowardice. It's just that we have had almost 100 years Hollywood propaganda claiming the opposite. In Normandy the most dogged fighting soldiers were clearly Germans when they were outnumbered by Allied by 1:3 or 1:5. British historian Max Hastings and many others have been stunned how many German units fought so ferocious with extremely courage.
From the Book " Band of Brothers" Lt. Winters set out with 12 men to destroy 4 guns. They took 3 of the 105's and Lt. Spears, who brought 5 men with him, lead the assault that took gun #4. A total of 4 Americans were killed, 2 wounded. The Germans suffered 15 dead, many more wounded, 12 prisoners were taken, they destroyed all four 105mm Howitzer field pieces, scattered what remained of the gun crews and neutralized the 50 man platoon of elite German Paratroopers detailed to guard them. They withdrew under heavy fire upon completion of their mission.
He didnt die from a enemy bullet. He was killed by a german grenade. And the MG's firing at the US troops didn't retreat. The US troops left them for the invasion force to take out which was ok because the Paratroopers assalting the guns were allready low on men.
