Desire and Knowledge - Two Blazing FIRES in Advaita Vedanta

  • In the Bhagavad Gita, fire is metaphorically "the Fire of Desire" as well as "the Fire of Knowledge." The ravenous, insatiable fire of desire is burnt to ashes by the blazing fire of self-knowledge - a unique instance of fighting fire with fire!
Kama, desire, burns inside one's heart, always demanding more pleasure. That kama burns within due to ignorance (avidya, ajnana), in particular, failure to recognize your true nature, atma, as the source of contentment, peace (shanti), and fulfillment (ananda). That ignorance is burnt by the fire of knowledge (jnana), called jnana agni by Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita.
Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha...

The series of videos released by Arsha Bodha Center invariably give us immense pleasure and knowledge that only Swamiji Tadatmanandaji can impart in his inimitable way and always with such utter clarity of expression. We are indeed blessed by having such a great teacher in the true Vedantic lineage in our midst. My desire is to visit his Ashrama and listen to him in person, which I hope will someday be fulfilled. A thousand salutations to our Swamiji...

Soul is in itself the only limitless value that there is. Its only function is Being.
However the "act of knowing" is directed towards limits that will never give you a limitless experience.
There is no wisdom, knowledge or love that our mind can access at the moment because it is filled with limited thoughts.
Surrender and forgiveness are the only tools we have.

      Wrong again brother.
      Soul is the eternal unalterable.
You are confusing it with the mind.
The mind is the "act of knowing".
      The trinity goes like this:
"Mind in the state of self knowledge."
      1 the self
2 the knowledge of the self
      3 the act of knowing
Our mind is on the state of "knowing limitations".
Soul has nothing else but Being.

    Guru,
Your example of kindling the wet wood with the help of match sticks one after another is not a good example. What in actuality we used to do in villages was that we collect dry wood sticks and dried grass sufficiently and burn them putting underneath the thick woods so that the their fire and heat gradually dried down the wet wood pieces and kindle eventually.
The same analogies can be made in spiritual journey of sanatana dharmma where the helping traditions, conventions, rituals, festivals, etc. along with the dharmik stories, contexts, puran, saptahas, guru sermons, etc. help kindle the very 'wet' conditions in the case of knowledge-worthiness of ours.

Bishwa Prakash Subedi I think we all have to find our own answers to this question, which I agree is a serious one. The answer must resonate with our ‘gunas’, which are different for each individual. I myself have moved away from rituals as I failed to see any value in them that was consistent with the core teachings of Vedanta. Dear Mr. Dutta, I fully agree that the rituals per se are no more than the means of pastime with essentially no spiritual value in them. For the spiritual upliftment we must devote wholeheartedly ourselves to the practices (sadhanas) directed by the vedas, upanishads or other Hindu scriptures or rishis / aptas as per the temparament and / or gunas one have.
By the way, what sadhana(s) are you practicing? I am, I think, pretty much spoiled one and am not involved in any meaningful homa, tapa, yoga, japa, swadhyayan, etc. Flipping from this to that, I have become too old to be of any use in the Almighty's abode, it at all.
