    In case anyone is wondering, soap’s alkaline properties tangle the wool together so they become matted, this happens because it opens the microscopic hair scales. Felting is the process of matting wool into a solid form and it is the oldest form of textile making in the world.

      I was thinking that same thing... watching this made my hands and arms ache... No way could I do this. Maybe 20 years ago... but even that is stretching it because I have lupus with rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.. so even in my late 20s and into my 30s I was having problems with all of that... I was able to make jewelry and crochet into my 30s but then my arms and neck and other things got so bad that I had to give it up. So no way could I do this lol... It looks rough even for someone who doesn't have those types of problems. and at least with this one... you know its great quality!!!

      When the laundry basket is empty, my cats just jump inside it. No wonder cat hair is on everything! Also, I recently bought them a very comfy bed which none of them has touched. I put treats inside and they reached in and pulled them out. I put catnip inside and it still sits untouched. I think people buy things for themselves more than their pets.

    • @teresa2845
      @teresa2845 4 года назад +2

      @@kimwildner9431 yes, but she needs to make sure that people know that her stuff is all made by hand... using real wool. Too many people get away with cheating... because of the way they word it. People no longer trust in the label. Its a shame because everyone loses out except for the people who are scamming... People are buying, thinking they are getting quality and saving a little money. People who are selling quality stuff aren't selling because the scammers sell for a little bit cheaper and their junk is made by machine, and not good all wool

    It would probably be helpful to do a final rinse with a bit of food grade diatomaceous earth that would stay within the fibers. Those would help keep mites and fleas and many other pests from making a home in the fibers.

      @artistpw Based on your comment, I was just reading up on food grade diatomaceous earth. I had never heard of it and according to many many sources, it sounds like it’s safe to use in this situation. Otherwise one could ‘dry clean’ the cat cave with the substance and unless the cat is allergic, the pet should be fine.

    These comments are enough to make any artisan weep! So, guys, now you get some idea of what it means to MAKE something by hand and from scratch. I don't know what this artisan charges for her work, but I bet she clears an hourly wage that none of you folks would consider working for.

    • @Boredchinchilla
      @Boredchinchilla 6 лет назад +19

      Jane Steinberg Right? I have seen those cat nests selling for $150-200 (and she charges SO MUCH less), and I bet it’s at least 10-20hrs actual labor to make one ( not including drying time, though I suppose she can make other houses while one dries, but there is only so much someone’s arms will do before becoming wet spaghetti). I love felting, but I am simply not strong enough to make anything more than tiny things...I did make an adorable narwhal, and am thinking of making hats for preemies

      @Miyu Miyu Privileges? It's now a privilege to be of a gender? FYI, as the very supportive relative of a nonbinary person, I feel compelled to add that the RIGHT way to to move the world towards greater acceptance is not to hyperfocus on gender terms and attack people who use them. Consider the fact that YOU have, and no doubt fiercely protect, the right to choose your own vocabulary and embrace your own identity. So respect it in others. One thing that will never change is that you need to give respect to receive respect and you do nothing but disservice to yourself and others when you fail to do so. Maybe try this response instead: "Yes, great work and might I add thank you for providing this free tutorial".

    It's gorgeous. I understand and respect the time made to make it, but I couldn't be bothered, and I know my cat would take one look at it and claw it to shreds before settling on a piece of old paper... thank you for the vid, though. Loved watching the process xxxxxxxxx

    That was cool :) I always wonder what makes people think of things like that? Hmmm I think I will wrap layers and layers of soaking wet wool around some plastic, scrub it with some soap ( a lot), beat it up and see what happens... Baffles my mind :)

      miaskittens D, Please post back after your experiment! And I'm thinking wrapping a few dry layers at a time, then wetting on the form would be so much easier to handle. Also, how are you gonna get the form out of the cave??? Maybe start with a beachball, inflated, then deflated for removal? Would you use the roving, or yarn? Roving is almost a requirement to get the fibers to lock together. Then the soaping step... Whoever said "Just buy one from Kivikis" may have the right idea. She really doesnt charge that much.
      I just thought of something: She's using reverse psychology on us, showing how much work it is, to make us talk ourselves into buying a finished one!! This may have worked, lol.

    • @edwardjamesjr1

      M pay guess is the bubble wrap is remived when the entry hole to enter the cat cave is created. The bubble wrap creates the separation for the interior of the cave.

    Cat caves don't need to be felted. Simple upholstery with batting and quilted material over a form is faster, cheaper and can be removed for washing.
    Take a covered litter box and make a quilted liner and cover using liquid stitching and Velcro.
    You can make it fancy, country, plush or whatever. You decide the material. Insert a pillow, pillow the top, add a heating blanket (always use low setting), or whatever.
    We made a giant birdhouse motel for the cats with multiple rooms. The top lifts on 3 hinges for cleaning. It's painted like a whimsical birdhouse and each of the four cats has their own room.
    Or take a large hatbox from Michael's, cover or paint the top and bottom but make sure to the top can be removed for cleaning.
    My sister's cat tree covers an entire wall in the rooms next to each other. We cut holes in the sheetrock and made four tunnels. In each room, the cat tree looks like a large bookcase. Unless you look closely, you wouldn't realize its a multi-story, two room cat playground that also holds plants and other objects. It's stained in cherry and multiple privacy rooms. The privacy rooms appear to be adjoining books. The shelves are lined with rubberized gripping.
    Plan and build your own. Use you imagination. Use discarded furniture or thrift shop items. Old nightstands make great cat retreats or litterbox holders.
