Pronunciation of foreign names is always tricky, however, getting it right does give more credibility to your videos. And Quito is not a challenging name specially if one does a bit of research; it is not pronounced Quit-O, instead it sounds more like 'keeto'. You can easily verify this at en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quito
The new airport has the most gorgeous approach ever. You fly above all these trenches and it is actually on top of a plateau. But I miss seeing big jets in the city.
My pleas have finally been heard. The "new" Mariscal Sucre Airport, which was opened in 2013, now has a 4000 meters long runway. And as an Ecuadorian, I can say that it has one of the most beautiful approaches in the world.
Thank for making a video in my home city, yes I am aware that our first attempt on making an airport evolved into a mistake, but our second airport is more than 10 times safer. I love your vids and looking foward to another one!
Hi swiss, I actually live here in Quito. I remember when i was little in February 19th 2013 going to a museum that was next to the old airport there. I said a final Adios to the old airport and saw all the airplanes taking off for the final time.
Swiss001: Kwee-toe and E-quador Ecuadorians and other Latinos: *triggered* The city is pronounced as Key-toe, I guess it closed because they don't want you to pronounce the words ever again
I used to live in equator and this airport is actually really enjoyable Since the airport is flat and long communities would have rc planes competitions, marathons, or you could just vibe around. *the airport isn’t bumpy as seen in the video
True I live in Quito. I remembered seeing the planes pass by before 2013. I was next to the airport when they where moving to the new Mariscal Sucre. I saw the planes leave :D it was very fun and sad now its more difficult to plane spot.
I'm from Quito and I live in here, and I'm really glad that you've mentioned us and yes, those were really strong reasons for the airport to close and make a new one on Tababela that is 1 hour away from the city
Swiss, I need to thank you for somethings: introducing me to butter landings introducing me to aviation showing me Flightline showed me, airline commander, showed me 787 flight sim showed me x-plane THANKS SO MUCH, SWIIS!
I'm from Ecuador. I saw this airport many times and the runway had many accidents. I've never departed from the old airport, but when an airplane was descending, the approach was very dangerous. The approach to the actual airport is very ugly. There are some turbulences
I flew in and out of Quito back in 1995. When landing I was blown away with how aggressively steep the decent and how hard the landing was. Pretty violent and I imagine hard on planes. Then when it was time to leave a month later, there was a long delay waiting to leave the airport on flight 966. When I finally did board the plane, it was brand new, like seats still wrapped in plastic and everything. Then when I got to Miami I started seeing the news broadcast. Turns out the plane, AA Flight 965, the plane i was supposed to board, had just crashed in the mountains that day.
Hey, you can take a look to Toncontin international airport at Tegucigalpa, in Honduras, according to many is the second most dangerous international airport in the entire world and it because of it short runway and because it is surround by mountain.
Thats my home town, that airport was very challenging so they may the new one that's out side of tow that has the problem of downdrafts and wind shear on final approach
You forgot the most important thing! The approach. Both 17 and 35 rwy were really difficult approaches. The less difficult, in rwy 35 you must fly through the city. The most difficult, in rwy 17 you must fly directly to the Casitagua Volcano and turn to land. It was a really challenging airport.
Now that we are in south america go to Enrique Olaya Herrera airport, in Medellín, Colombia, de Code is SKMD, the airport has a difficult approach with lots of mountains, and the runway is such a little bit short, can you get big planes there please please
I live in Ecuador, pretty close to that old "park" that is kind of a meme here since that is more like a big trash Dump. I even remember when there was a plane crashed into a house so technically you didn't fail landing, you just recreated a real life fail. Good video.
Hey swiss, do you know Kemayoran International Airport wich is Indonesia's first airport who operates international flight? if you dont know or never heard about the airport, i think you should try it, becouse its quite hard to fly there, and dont surprised if you find a highway nearby.
The new airport is also slightly lower 24OO m vs 2850 m). An aircrew relative operated BOAC VC10s into Quito in the mid-60s on the route Trinidad- Caracas-Bogota-- Quito- Lima. He said they scheduled Quito akeoff for dawn owing to altitude and heat limitations on operational ability. The VC10 was designed for high, hot overseas international operations, eg in Africa, but this was a real challenge. Anyone out there aware of similar arrangements for such larger, heavier aircraft? Or of that BOAC route?
