- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Bob Boilen | July 15, 2021
Lucy Dacus sits at a very special desk for this Tiny Desk (home) concert. And though she's played the NPR Tiny Desk twice - first in 2016 and a few years later with Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers as boygenius - the desk at Maggie L. Walker Governor's School likely holds deeper memories. Much of her third album, Home Video, is centered on her school years in Richmond, Va., and the friendships formed and shattered there. During those high school years, she met her musical mate, guitarist Jacob Blizard (seated on the right side of the screen), and the audio engineer capturing all these songs, Collin Pastore.
Lucy Dacus opens with "Brando," a song about young adulthood, and for Lucy, understanding how others perceive her. "You called me cerebral," she sings, "I didn't know what that meant." She and her band play "VBS," which Lucy explains "means vacation bible school, for all you heathen folks." It's Lucy, as a young Christian, thinking about her faith. Then, four acoustic guitars gather for "Going Going Gone," as Ricardo Lagomasino moves from the drum kit and Dominic Angelella puts down his bass. Sarah Goldstone helms the keyboards. For the final tune, the band vanishes as Lucy plays the most troubling song from Home Video, "Thumbs," a song where Lucy fantasizes about murdering a friend's estranged father. It's a tune I often find too disturbing to listen to. But it's also an example of why artists create - to deal with profound issues. When successful (and "Thumbs" certainly is), these types of songs can move writers and listeners to think hard and understand.

this album is brimming with nostalgia, it feels so intensely raw and personal, like you found someone's highschool diary, or like you're under the covers with someone you don't know well yet and they're whispering their secrets to you. experiential and gorgeous
yes, every line is such a private memory that's shared so openly by her with us, i think it's beautiful
i'm trying to give an attentive listen to all of her albums and so far the one i connect the most to is home video. such a beautiful, personal concept, written so tenderly....
Like you’re watching somebody’s home videos🤞🤞
What a beautiful description.
yeah and the way that a lot of the lyrics were actually based off the journals from her childhood
“I play two chords and I mess them up.” This woman is a true blessing.
i love sad people music
im a sad person so same
Couldn't have said it better than that. Lol.
My favorite line from Jenny Lewis: "You're not happy but you're funny, and I'm tripping over my my joy." Lucy makes me feel like that.
For us it's just music
Me too
lucy saying “cool” after literally every song is my spirit animal
She said it to start as well. We all have our go to words.
she still does it at concerts ive been twice and its always after the most gut wrenching ones
back in the cabin snorting nutmeg in your bunk bed is such an iconic line
She has such a stable voice, it's truly a skill; amazing breath control.
her voice on thumbs????? how is she so effortlessly perfect!?!? i'd self my soul for a warm hug from this women!!!
Me also as well
Right? It's like she opens her mouth and magic flys out
Me2
It's probably the effort tbh but I'm pretty sure I get your point
oh my god the way they did the "slayer at full volume" bit was so cool
I LOVE the line "That's only something you would say in the car, / we've been breathing the same air for too long"
crying, bawling, weeping, sobbing, shedding tears, screaming, on the floor, in a ball, rocking back and forth, questioning my life just from this video.
"thumbs" was released on the night of my birthday when i turned 20. my dad ignored me for hours that night and i just remember hiding under the covers and counting down until it was midnight. thumbs was a good birthday present
0:07 - *Brando* (3:01)
3:31 - *VBS* (7:33)
8:26 - *Going Going Gone* (11:10)
11:52 - *Thumbs*
[16:15 - Tiny Desk team]
Anyone else genuinely have tears roll down their face during Thumbs? I was not ready.
Yes. Going from the full band to that emotional punch of a solo performance really hit me.
OMG YES
Yes, I’m so sorry. Truly a biographical tale. Probably autobiographical.
You are a person I’ll shed a tear for.
Many of Lucy’s songs make me cry
She performed thumbs for tiny desk. I'm only on the first song, and I'm already doubting my emotional readiness
I needed those last lines of Thumbs when I was in the 5th grade. But I'm still grateful to get them at 35.
I hope you feel freer these days.
YOU NEVER KNEW ME LIKE U THOUGHT U DID🗣🗣🗣‼️‼️‼️
SHE’S HERE SHE’S BACK LET’S GOOOO god I love this woman so much
Likewise great finding these gems
yea but do you think she can sing..
ne é
yea its fine when shes in the tripple group..
but she can and never will..
but lets ignore that, and keeps her hops up
Aka lie..
@@mikevandervegt literally nobody asked. get a hobby.
Same for Fazerdaze, new album the Queen Kiwi, thus returned!!!!
Amazing performance. VBS, Going Going Gone, and Thumbs could each be the best song on any one album, but if you’re Lucy Dacus you put em all together to make it impossible to play favorites.
Review folklore king
she so effortlessly makes the most beautiful sounds in the world
The recording engineer needs a few Grammys for his efforts on this recording
god her voice live sounds just like the recorded songs do. amazing
The way she looks so emotionless, yet sings with so much emotion really blows my mind. Bravo.
Oh, Baby Girl, sing your joy and sing your sorrow. The world needs to hear. 💜
lucy calling me a heathen is all i need to make my week better
her storytelling is just as stunning as her voice
Can we talk about the production on this thing??? Stunning.
I’ve been into Phoebe for some time, listened to the boygenius ep a bit ago & finally getting into Lucy Dacus. Her lyrics + voice just amazing!
time for julien, complete the trio! 🙏🏼 she’s so amazing
Took you awhile. Lucy is truly a god send. Her voice flickers between hope and desire.
A genius 👍❤️
How did you learn about Phoebe, Dacus and Julien? Who or what brought you to their attention?
same! i'm in awe.
the fact that she didn’t play Christine or First Time from this album is treasonous. Either way, amazing tiny desk, love this woman with every fiber of my being.
this is so comforting?? can't wait to hear her perform the rest of the album live especially triple dog dare
Lucy is such a gem. she is the most beautiful human being and I am so grateful to exist in the same timeline as Lucy Dacus.
Once again, this channel has educated me, another astonishing artist. Thumbs really speaks to me.
Thank you
She has featured previously as part of boygenius. Well worth a watch
Hey, Lucy. You likely won’t see this. You are so relatable for me in the religious confusion, and the lasting impact of high school years. Thank you for sharing.
SAME. Sometimes it feels like we shared the same life. Just crazy how much I relate.
Saw her open for mitski once. So wonderful live.
I'm not sure if she's simply complex or complicatedly simple.
Brilliant either way.
Gosh the pictures in all of these songs are amazing you can literally visualize them. Amazing story teller. The connections as well, you could start a song and not get the connection until many lines later and suddenly realize the phrase or connection. Just stunning🙌
The fact this is recorded in Richmond at Maggie Walker makes this even more enjoyable
Almost in my backyard.
The lyrics in 'going going gone' are just the most incredible imagery and memories of being about 11/12. Loved this whole gig
The imagery in the second verse especially always blows me away.
i think i love this woman too much
Night shift and time breaker have been on repeat for me all month, I’m so excited for this!!!
Time Breaker is an absolute masterpiece!
are you guys talking about Timefighter or am i officially losing it
@@marrow94 ah same I love it
@@karimdib4436 lol wait yeah I meant timefighter I just mixed up the titles
Brando's chorus does something to my heart
Why did the going gone song make me cry oosshh great wee band man
Literally the BEST thing to wake up to. If she would’ve played Yours & Mine I would’ve lost it lol I love that song
i hope she gets big soon - she’s so underrated 💖
I literally yelled when I saw the title. I love her. I hope she gets discovered by everyone.
Ugh I love her so much!!! One of my favourite artists of all time. Home video is truly a masterpiece
waking up to this felt like waking up on my birthday tbh
Happy imagery birthday hehe
she sounds just like the record and it looks so effortless
I´ve been looking for that kind of voice, that sweetness for almost two years. Thank you for opening doors inside. Greetings from Venezuela in a rainy day
Check out the third and fifth Sarah Harmer records, "All Of Our Names" and "Oh Little Fire." Ear candy with atmosphere and Canadian Melancholy. 😉
2 years later this still hurts
can't believe she played Thumbs for this, what a surprise! i was wondering when you would have her back on for a show :^)
wish i could experience listening to Thumbs for the first time again, it's... one of those songs. Thank you, Lucy ❤
Impossible not to appreciate how her perfect voice flows so easily in such perfect songs so casually.
So precious and rare is to find an artist with her talent and charisma.
Impossible not to Love Lucy!
This whole album is so incredible!
i love you lucy i would never call you cerebral💙
Beautiful and cerebral, absolutely!
her voice: ***chefs kiss***
lucy's voice is the most angelic thing to exist o love her 🥺
she looks and sounds omnipotent I love her
if she played triple dog dare I would’ve never recovered🤧🤧
Wonderful performance. Thumbs is very real. I've felt similar emotions. Fortunately, with time, those relationships have healed but as the partner of someone in a situation like this, it's hard to know what to do.
Just saw her at Red Rocks with Shakey Graves. Easily fell in love with her work.
Beautiful poets never die. Thank you for your time and inspiration this morning.
I keep coming back to this so often. She's just absolutely fantastic.
she is pure magic. her voice is like melted butter. i am so enthralled by her and her music
RELEASE THE DACUS MEMOIR!!! That’s all I got to say. Excellent performance!
Oh! I just got off a plane, and lo, Lucy Dacus is in my subs box. How fortuitous! Guess I can sleep later. 😅
this version of thumbs is definitely my favorite, its so intense and her voice is so pure, fr msde me tear up live laugh lovr lucy dacus
Thumbs absolutely got me in my emotions. What a beautiful musician.
This is such a good album MY GOD....i cried like a fountain the first time i listened theough it and i couldn't tell exactly why, but it still fills my chest with such strong emotions. Music like this makes me glad I'm alive and able to enjoy such wonders
My favorite part is the guy playing the drums with bundles of uncooked spaghetti.
sushi rollers lol
Spaghetti is honestly great if that's what you're going for
I totally love *Lucy Dacus' vibes* and her songwriting and the lyrics!
Sending lots of love from Seoul and hope I can see your gigs on one fine day.
Lucy's voice makes me feel so comfortable as I listen her singing
Boygenius supremacy.
Random thought. I know way more people who like Lucy Dacus than listen to her. I know none of her songs but I love Julien baker.
Was supposed to study but Lucy popped up. And no regrets.
Also, THUMBS! :')
wow thumbs always makes me cry
Love Lucy!!!! So happy for her!
I remembered seeing Lucy Dacus for the first time in Austin, TX during SXSW 2018! It was an amazing experience!
This woman's lyrics are just next level.
Wow.... Thumbs broke my heart. Did not expect to bawl my eyes out but somehow that was exactly what I needed to hear right now. Thank you so much.
i would be so honored to go to the same school as lucy dacus
They brought her back!
I feel so safe and warm and assured around her voice
