It appears I misspoke. The range of Barbie dolls offered is quite diverse, so the diversity we see in Barbieland DOES make sense: shop.mattel.com/collections/barbie-dolls.
I’m a former Barbie designer from 2007-2012. Gloria’s daughter Sasha is a callback to Barbie’s rivals The Bratz who disrupted the doll industry. The ‘gang of four’ in the cafeteria resemble the My Scene characters (My Scene was Mattel’s answer to the Bratz), so the girls were meant to be a double-corollary for both the Bratz and My Scene dolls. Sasha is the name of the Black Bratz character who is the most outspoken member of the group. Ironically, I work for MGA now and I just designed the Bratz Pretty N Punk Sasha which just hit the market last week.
I’m 40. My daughter is 16. You’d be surprised at how diverse Barbie’s have become. They have different ethnicities and (somewhat) different body shapes and sizes. I don’t think they have any Queer representation though. My daughter loved playing with her Black Barbies with natural hair.
You two are my new favourite movie reviewers, super knowledgeable about film and the language of cinema but with the genuine conversational feel of a post movie drink.
This movie was deff for the older millennials and the generations prior who played with Barbie. It felt like a satire about the masculine vs feminine beef that still exists. It was cute to watch but I went into it with low expectations lol 💗

I think the daughter was alluding to the fact that Barbie placed this unattainable and “rigid” standard of beauty onto young girls. When I was younger, Barbie wasn’t as diverse as it is now and that was only over a decade ago lol.
Love your review as always. I grew up in the 90s with Barbie’s and at 31 still collect them. Just have to mention, if you follow the current line of Barbie from this year, they are diverse! They have short Barbie, curvy Barbie, Barbie’s with a variety of disabilities. They even have a Barbie of Laverne Cox who is transgender. In that sense, I felt they accurately represented them in the movie. The doctor Barbie in the movie was portrayed by a transgender actress. As a trans woman myself I love to see that representation! Overall I loved the message of the movie. Side note, I did have the pregnant Midge doll growing up lmao

This was a good breakdown of the movie. You guys never disappoint. I have to admit that I didn't think Mattel would let Gerwig tackle anything serious, so props for their attempt. I loved Barbie growing up and had a nice collection. My best friend and I used to reenact scenes from Dynasty with our dolls. Miss the '80s!😊
I was expecting this to be like Enchanted meets Life Size. But instead it went in a different direction. Kinda giving The Stepford Wives meets The Truman Show. I'm going to see it tomorrow
It's very interesting hearing your take, I watched a couple of Barbie movie reviews (Moist Critical, Nostalgia Critic) but there was this one reviewer whose main issue was that "Barbie was the biggest man-hating movie" and "mothers should be ashamed to let their daughters watch it." From the sounds of your review, Ken had some realization and development and Barbies acknowledged them as individual people. Really curious to watch this movie myself.
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie along with my boyfriend he wanted to see Oppenheimer and thought the Barbie movie was geared toward kids only. After watching it he actually had a really good time he was laughing and said it was surprisingly good. Your review nailed the overall mood of the film it was cute, funny and it was a good time.
I’ve been questioning if i want to see this film because I’ve been waiting for the comparison to Life Size w/ Tyra Banks because the promos haven’t intrigued me at all…
I loved Greenberg and The Squid and the Whale. Thank you guys! 😊 I can't wait to see this. I've been digging all of Margot's looks to promote the film. I needed this review as a pallette cleanser after just seeing Oppenheimer. Edit: I gave all my Barbie's haircuts as a kid in the 1980's to give them a Pat Benatar look 😆
Did you know ... Barbie was originally a toy marketed towards men and sold at smoke shops. like a hula skirt bobble head. Men didn't want it, but girls sure did.
Here’s an interesting wrinkle: I know a lot of parents who are asking if they can take their kids. And I didn’t know how to answer that. I wouldn’t take anyone under 16 because of all the double entendre. The jokes are clever and the audience laughed nonstop but I don’t think kids would get it. This is an adult comedy not a kids movie.
From y'all's (I'm from central Louisiana lol) description of the movie, it sounds like a mix of Stepford Wives & Free Guy. It's spoils the plot, but since I don't care enough about this movie, I can enjoy you all's take. I still look forward to watching (at home, streaming). Thanks!
I actually wasn't going to see it based on so many negative reviews but your review as well as some others talking about the emotions they experienced made me run out and see it at the last minute Saturday evening on opening weekend. Still able to get a very good seat. One thing all reviewers, including you, are leaving out is that the Barbieland is influencing toy sales and demand for toys. When Barbieland turned to Kendom, there was a scene back in the real world at Mattel where pallets of toys were being delivered for Ken houses and it was mentioned that there was a huge demand for those toys. I think that influenced the execs to visit Barbieland to see what was going on. Also, the Ken doll's weapons were typical toys the kids would have to use in their own inventory, which probably meant the kids were fighting in the real world to also bring it back to Barbieland.
I think the idea of putting Barbie in a box was to store her away somewhere with the other defective Barbies. Sort of in a westworld way where the robots that malfunction get sent to cold storage and just lull there forever.
I liked this movie but by the last act, it felt like it ran out of steam (and ideas). I loved it when Michael Cera danced though. I wish the whole film kept up the fun and energy of the dance and Los Angeles scenes. Still not clear how Barbieland works out in relation to the real world
I really identified with the daughter in the movie. I remember growing up and my mom wanting me to play with barbies, but I outgrew them very quickly and at one point felt embarassed for ever liking them. Even came home from college to find my mom going through our stash, dreamhouse, pink corvette, and all. When they revealed it was the mom who was playing with the barbie, I cried because it truly hit me how my mom felt, combined the existential thought of getting older and eventually losing your parents, while parents try to hang onto your youth. Definitely appreciated the mother daughter dynamic and felt it added many layers on how different generations view femininity and growing up in general.
I was shocked and surprised when Joseph started talking about the hair in this film! Well, they say in Hollywood it's all about having good hair and good teeth.
This year I got fully immersed in the world of rupaul's drag race and watched every season, so it brings me joy every time you reference something from drag race 😂
Who didn’t decide as a kid to play beauty shop and ruin your Barbie’s hair? Me!!!! I did!!!!!😂😂😂😂 I’m getting kind of tired of all movies make the females badass and smart and the male leads morons.
I loved the film it was so fun to watch in a packed cinema, all of the audience that went was 18+ in my theatre. It was quite a flawed film though, it felt very cramped with ideas and underdeveloped character arcs, I wish they ditched the whole Mattel story arc, I understand that they were suppose to be like the men in suits were suppose to be like the monkeys in Wizard of Oz, but it just felt like so much was going on, I forgot they were even a part of the movie a few times. I totally agree with the daughter point, I understand they wanted to cater to children too, but I think she could have been a more meaningful film with just America, maybe they could have shown scenes with America playing with Barbie as a child. i still loved it though, I was obsessed with Barbie as a kid and it made me feel really sentimental watching. Ryan was amazing too.
Kate McKinnon is just gay Kristin Wiig. I actually mixed them up when I watched it. Either one of them could play Weird Barbie (I feel like her appearance COULD HAVE been weirder)
The scene where Will Ferrell freaks out in Barbie land when he sees pregnant Barbie was extremely hilarious. Reason being is because they did discontinue that Barbie and that's because when it came out little girls were trying to cut their pregnant mom's stomach open to get the baby out
Accolades? This movie was awful. It is woke, but the character development was awful, Will Ferrell was annoying, and the message was heavy-handed and overly simplistic. The idea that women can't ever be right from a character with zero issues in her own life was ridiculous. Maybe if they actually showed that it could work, but her daughter hating her is because of her, not patriarchy.
The only Oscar campaign I support is for Ryan gosling to sing I am Ken at the Oscar’s lol I do wish they would’ve shown how Ken brain washed the Barbies
My theater was packed for this film. I also saw Oppenheimer over the weekend too and I personally liked Barbie better simply because it made me laugh. But Oppenheimer was definitely visually stunning in imax. I’m glad that both had great openings. Barbie was slightly more full and did get the extra special theater. People were even fighting over seats. Oppenheimer still had a great turn out.
When U2 started talking about "diversity" of the BarbieLand and our current line of Barbie dolls, I thought... Mattel (* along w/Trixie Mattel) will next release their Diversity Barbie Doll Collection, featuring: * all Races * all Religions * all Gender Orientations * all Heights * all Sizes Etc. Etc. Etc. 😅🤣😂 Thanks for the review, it was fun. Still not sure if I would like it though.
Thank you! I really wanted to listen to something objective and that could summarize the movie. Now I actually want to see it so thank you for being objective.
No Barbie had great hair! It's when you cut it you realized her hair wasn't naturally curly. Than you realized you messed her up! Panic sets in and you throw her in the back of the closet. Bc if my mom sees it I will never get a new Barbie ever again. I haven't seen the movie but I can't wait to see Kate McKinnon as that bitter Barbie.
Oh sweetheart are you okay? She was found in the back of the closet? I get it, I get it, I'm sending a hug 🤗 . Mine was discovered under a Care Bears pajama top...shoeless, bald, no jewelry.. "we" as kids didn't know the hair wouldn't lay flat if you cut it 😢 that IT WOULD SPIKE like a porcupine!!! 😂😂😂 We didn't know 😂😂
I waited to watch this review until after I saw it and I agree with everything you both said. There was something missing and pieces that seemed unnecessary and forced but overall still fun. I actually loved Ryan Gosling as Ken. I felt like he really committed to it, I’m also biased though because I’m obsessed with The Place Beyond the Pines and can’t unsee him as a truly committed actor/artist. Just thinking about him as a mousketeer to where he is now I really can’t imagine anyone else in that role.
I had designed and hand sewed clothes for my smallest (but still thick waisted) baby girl doll. Was that one of the reasons I was not allowed a Barbie doll as a child? That there was never a sewing teacher Barbie?
Surprisingly, I didn't hear them mention my one burning question: Is Ken anatomically correct? That's always been the joke and I would be shocked if they didn't put it in the movie.
I'm a guy and just saw this and movie was a riot. I didn't laugh at everything but about 50% of it I did. I give this movie a thumbs-up cause it's story is pretty cool.
It’s so weird to say that “real” Barbies don’t reflect that when they have every shape, color, and size of Barbie you can imagine. Down Syndrome Barbie, Quadriplegic Barbie, Wheelchair Barbie… unless I misunderstood something, that doesn’t make sense.
I loved the movie other than the race change of Sasha the Bratz doll I love the reflection of women in the barbies and explaining how anxiety and striving for perfection effects women and I just love it all
I have a confession and question: as a Barbie-o-phile (?) was the "Kissing Barbie" in the movie? It was one of mine as a kid, I loved her chiffon dress covered in itty-bitty tinyred lips and she came with tube of pink heart-shaped lipstick? 😂😂 ( Don't laugh I'm old enough to recall Barbies that came with hands predrilled holes ready for the diamond ring..wow, we messed up so many girls 😬). *As a STEM woman and former STEM kid* I will neither confirm nor deny if I still have her, lol 😂. .... I love science and beautiful clothes..The Oscar de LaRenta Barbie [designer wardrobe collection to clarify] was a monetary sacrifice of my entire summer childhood stash!
omg I had forgotten... that's right... they should've put that in the movie, the pre-drilled holes in the hand for the wedding ring. now that you said it, a memory came back.... omg. ooooof. ...I also remember the "math is hard" era...
I agree with you guys that it could have been more subversive but I still had a good time, it hit some emotional notes and a few laughs as well. Matchbox 20 was on heavy rotation on my Discman in the 90s so I lost it when they started singing 'Push' I thought that song was so deep when I was a teenager 😂 And maybe I am the only one but I didn't love the mom's speech about being a woman, I thought it was kind of trite..but maybe I follow too many anti-patriarchy accounts on social media loll..I gave Barbie 3/5 but will watch it again for the pop culture and fashion references 💖
I know audiences and, granted, even the movie itself might have some big talking points and strong messages we should all be discussing apparently, but I didn’t really feel that while watching it or afterward. It was a fun, comedic watch with great costuming and set designs. I really enjoyed it. Probably one of my favorites of the year.
It appears I misspoke. The range of Barbie dolls offered is quite diverse, so the diversity we see in Barbieland DOES make sense: shop.mattel.com/collections/barbie-dolls.

People were even fighting over seats. Oppenheimer still had a great turn out.
When U2 started talking about "diversity" of the BarbieLand and our current line of Barbie dolls, I thought... Mattel (* along w/Trixie Mattel) will next release their Diversity Barbie Doll Collection, featuring:
* all Races
* all Religions
* all Gender Orientations
* all Heights
* all Sizes
Etc. Etc. Etc. 😅🤣😂
Thanks for the review, it was fun. Still not sure if I would like it though.
I didn't play with barbie. I loved baby dolls.. You guys are awesome 😊
I actually had American Girl dolls (I think I did have some Barbies I made into weird barbie. but mostly my little ponies and American Girl dolls).
😂😂😂 We didn't know 😂😂
Strangers with Candy was the bomb ! I loved that show so much ! Hated when it got cancelled :(
I waited to watch this review until after I saw it and I agree with everything you both said.
Ya survived the great Barbenheimer 2023 😎
I had designed and hand sewed clothes for my smallest (but still thick waisted) baby girl doll. Was that one of the reasons I was not allowed a Barbie doll as a child?
That there was never a sewing teacher Barbie?
The daughter was exactly like the young people on twitter which is why she was so insufferable.
She was..dare I say it..a BRAT(z doll)
You guys implying that there might have been a more R rated version of this script that Mattel might have said no to?
Putting her back in the box was to give her a factory reset, so to speak... not specifically to transport her back.
Every time either one of you says ‘several many’ I giggle like a loon.
Surprisingly, I didn't hear them mention my one burning question: Is Ken anatomically correct? That's always been the joke and I would be shocked if they didn't put it in the movie.
Barbie says neither of them have genitals, but Ken interjects that he does.
@@fishjellyfilmreviews thanks!
They mention it a few times. There's also a line from weird barbie where she says she wants to rub Ken's bulge.
I'm a guy and just saw this and movie was a riot. I didn't laugh at everything but about 50% of it I did. I give this movie a thumbs-up cause it's story is pretty cool.
They do have full figure Barbies now they are called Extra Barbie 😂 they look like LOL dolls just bigger
The story- as you told it- sounds amazing. Am I going to see Barbie?
I LOVED this movie it’s so much fun cringe surprisingly emotional so much representation great lessons the FASHION
I loved the movie other than the race change of Sasha the Bratz doll I love the reflection of women in the barbies and explaining how anxiety and striving for perfection effects women and I just love it all
this film is such a white feminist think piece, if you replace every character with a cis white person the story would not change
Men and women are complicated should be respected for their own uniques.
I’ve been waiting for this review 🥤🍿
Sounds like bad screenplay if there's more to Ken than Barbie in a Barbie movie?
Love the review thanks.❤
Im not watching this at all, all that pink will make breakout in a rash. So im here to be spoilt... I like margot but not that much.
