The Midnight Special has a special meaning for me. Years ago, the Sheriff in Houston told me never to go there or he would arrest me on sight. It is a long story.
In the late 70's or early 1980's they performed at the University of Minnesota. To the best of my recollection it was just the two of them, without any back-up. They were fantastic!
It was sort of a standing rule whenever Arlo and Pete got together for a performance.Arlo would ask "what song should we start with?" And the answer from Pete was always the same-"How about Midnight Special Arlo?" RIP Pete. It was a great run and now you sing for the angels.
I saw them perform at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles a couple of times and on both occasions this this the song with which they opened the show. Yes, CCR's cover of the classic Leadbelly tune is the better one but I believe that CCR owe more to Pete than vice-versa.
My brother called his wee boy arlo after this guy! I thought woooo lets find out how cool this guy must be for him to name his son after him!!!! very nice but and its a huge but! why? shaking head in wonderment? lol soz to all his fans x
ftjax Creedence hit a home run with that song, those two sound awful. I think you are the one that does not understand.Listen to the Creedence Clearwater version then compare. You go set in the corner with your little dunce cap on!
don jenkins This song predates CCR by *decades*, at least. The lyrics were first printed in 1905 - that was before even Pete Seeger was born. Get your head out of your ass, or go be ignorant somewhere else.

One of the main musical Art Forms of America...right up there with Jazz, Rock, the Western and Detective Novels, and stand-up comedy...

I wish I could have met Pete Seeger, he's like the father I didn't have that I didn't have, but will always have.
I was fortunate enough to see them in concert at an outdoor theater in Sothern Ca.
I heard it in those days and liked it very much. Good to hear it again.

Classic elder statesmen of US protest music , but I think Credence do a much better rendition , nevertheless : Salute !
