Hells Canyon Chukar Hunting w/ Morgan Mason & Danielle Prewett | S1E03 | MeatEater Hunts

- MeatEater’s Associate Editor Morgan Mason heads to Hells Canyon, Idaho for a chukar hunt with Danielle Prewett of Wild & Whole. Morgan’s wirehaired pointing griffon, Pinion, leads the chase as they search for these “red-legged devil birds." Aching feet, sore knees, and missed shots are all part of what many consider to be the hardest hunt in the upland world. At the end of the day, all of that work makes Danielle’s spatchcock chukar with Brussels sprouts even more delicious, and that ain’t easy.

The first time you hunt for Chukar, it's for fun.
Every time after that- it's for revenge.
Truest words ever spoken about chasing the devils.
Amen
Last time I went after those little devils, I had to kill two rattlesnakes and rolled an ankle. Just makes cooking em up all the more gratifying.
That's well put, I'll remember that.
I guess Im asking randomly but does any of you know of a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid lost my password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me
Hands down the best hunting/fishing/trapping & cooking show out there!! Can not wait for season 9 on Netflix to come out.
Glad to see Danielle hunting! I love her cooking videos, but fun to see her out there proving it isn't just a dudes' hobby.
@Thorekk Please slink back into the hole you came from
Danielle charges. She's a badass.
Thorekk bro you’re emitting way more soy than him
her instagram is a lot of cooking, but she pounds the ground - no way she could be a poser and a part of the meat eater crew.
She complains like she's at work. Hunting sucks with people who do that. It has nothing to do with her gender.
I live in idaho where I have access to these devils birds and their hellish habitat. I love climbing the bare mountains chasing after those quicks guys. It’s very cool to see a meat eater special on chukar hunting, thank you!!!
Are you laughing at them trying to walk too? Idaho native and I've hunted same hills. Ain't nothing but a normal hunt for this bird lol
Ya same here idaho normal hunt just my family tends to trip less
I've done Hell's Canyon several times, and it is a cake walk compared to the terrain here in Inland SoCal ... steeper, more tumbly rocks, looser soil, dense chapparal and the quail are much smaller and way faster than chukar, and disappear over ridges ... you get 3/4 of a second to locate and pull the trigger. This past season, the birds were flushing 80 yard in front of the dog, not infrequently.
Danielle is awesome! Hope she's in more episodes in the future.
Love seeing Danielle out there! Love her wild and whole chanell, she does great stuff
Just got a Shorthair a couple months ago. This gets me excited about the hunts I'll be taking her over the years!
I live in Boise and everyone I talk to here about Chukar hunting in the Snake River wilderness hates it because they are incredibly elusive. And yet they still do it. The hunter's mindset.
I love that you are like “with sore feet knees and banged up elbows.....” and yet nothing about a worn out dog. He looked so tired and sore and he had to walk back to camp. I felt bad more for him then the hunters.
Two thoughts: 1- use a stick to help in such uneven terrain 2 - pick up your bloody empty cartridges!
Yeah man, Idaho country needs to be taken care of. Respect the land and the animals in it or gtfo.
so what they have to film them picking up every single carttridge just so you have some piece of mind?
They pick them up. MeatEater generally discusses and emphasizes doing it, but they can't exactly film every cartridge getting retrieved.
I for damn sure wouldn't be carrying a high quality over/under on a hunt for these things! Great content guys, thanks!
Those def acquired a few scratches on this trip.
Love the adventure, the landscape and the entire process and the campfire dinner. Seriously jealous, the ONLY think I don't agree with is when Morgan shot his last bird, and he ejected the shell and kept walking down to the bird. He should have picked up the ejected shell. Carry In - Carry Out leave no trace....
Glad to see some upland on the show
Those things are the sheep of upland birds! Thx for sharing. Took me back to my 20’s. Great dog! Thx!
My favorite hunt of all , red legged devils , great job guys , God bless
Had fun BSing with all of you at the Pheasants Forever banquet, and I'm glad to finally see how you did. It looks like some fun, but hard, miles.
It's safe to say that hunger is the best seasoning!
glad to see some bird hunting on the channel, keep it up!
Love the Meat Eater videos, damn this guy needs to learn how to walk lol, flat-landers.
The idaho folk definitely look at people from other places funny and now I get why. They all seem like clumsy oafs. Falling down in driftboats, falling down on slick algae rocks with a fly rod, falling down in the hills. 😂
As an Idahoan who hunts regularly, yes, jesus christ. The only pass I give is walking in recently burned country, that shit is dusty and slick at an angle especially if it rains.
@@scottleggejr Why fall down when it is more fun to fly into a landing?
@@johnl.sillasen1780 it's like a mix of floor routine and rhythmic gymnastics
Love seeing the upland stuff! Nothing against pheasant but they are like fishing a stocked pond compared to chukar, huns and even sharptail. Love seeing dog work too
My country and my favorite kind of bird hunting (love the bossness comment about Chukar hunting for revenge). I’ve got 5 or 6 birds on a couple of occasions, but mostly shoot many shells and bring home 1 or 2 “devil birds”. Always fun to watch my GSP work them. Unfortunately we’re both getting up there in age. Not many more Chukar hunts left before we both “retire” from it. Gonna miss it a lot, but time marches on.
Rookie hunters!
Awesome vid, keep posting them!
Lovin’ these new Web Series!
I love that dog. What a G!
Ive been hunting this are for almost 50 years, and sent Steve a note about hooking up for some upland bird hunting nice to see this...
Makes me SOOOOO homesick.
My first watch of their new short form... I really enjoyed that.
incredible! Idaho country is some of the "nastiest" in the lower 48, and Hell's Canyon can be especially formidable. Gorgeous landscapes though, with tons of game. Nice job pulling that bird. That meal was well earned.
can we please have more Danielle please :) I serious!
Lots of inspiration and hard work pay off even if you don't kill anything, good job. I personally love the video
Great episode! I’ve seen chukar along the Snake river as a kid but never got the opportunity to give it a try.
I love the videos, but I hope they are picking up their shot shells!
We could do without all the cussing, too.
@@benmordecai658 What's the issue with it? I'm sure you've cursed at some point.
I'm sure they are picking up their shot shells
Doubt it, they out of towners
Ants and spiders need homes too.
Love that land. Looking forward to visiting again someday.
Good looking Griff!
Guaranteed weight loss strategy: Go Chukar hunting. Eat only what you kill and as much celery as you can stuff into your maw. You'll be skinny as a rail in one season.
Pick up your shells man!
My biggest pet peeve. Finding hulls that guys are too lazy to clean up.
You guys always need something to complain about. I'm sure they do it, I just doubt them picking shit up makes the cut for content
@@OneYoumark I dont always complain but leaving shit out in the field is a bum move. They made absolutely no move to pick them up. Love the show but that really is a dirty habit. Pick up your brass/shells. Or leave it to pollute and litter the "untouched" country
@@OneYoumark Even if that is the case. It SHOULD make the cut just to show proper etiquette for new hunters and for these other cunts who leave trash in the woods.
@@gspgsp100 Where I hunt upland, the hulls are triffling; it's the stolen cars being stripped out that mess the place up.
"Is this the hardest hunting upland? Maybe." No maybe about it. Anyone who has hunted chukar would agree with me.
idk chasing rams around the moutain is a pain in the ass
@@xxdroppedoffxxiwnl7108 rams aren't upland birds....
try hunting chuukar when it's snowing and there is 4" of fresh powder snow on the ground and a covey of 15 birds explode out of the cover. Norman Rockwell stuff.
BTW...
As a hunter I am all about fair chase...skip the trail cameras in season and also baiting, certainly on public lands. Could care less what a person does on their own land, within the local game hunting laws anyways.
Where SR on public chukar hunting? Haven't seen him giving it a try. Let's do one in the Snake River terrain Steve.
Appreciate Meateaters approach to fair chase hunting.
Stay easy and enjoy the ride.
Hells canyon or not, you guys are living the dream! This is all about that type B fun!
Pins a good good boy!!
Hard hunting I've been an upland bird hunter since I was 14 I'm 26 now valley and gambels quail are my favorite I hate dove geese and duck hunting because you sit there and wait for them to come to you quail you interact with you talk to them and they talk to you and bust covey's alot of walking but it's rewarding there's a reason that the population is so huge in California not alot of people want to put in the work out here to hunt them but it's my favorite
Anyone else secretly rooting for a covey bust every time they're walking around with their action open?
Kevin Timson You’ve never hunted over a good pointer.
Now that’s a hunt! 👍
More women hunters = fewer man caves, just saying, ladies!! Love to have you in the field with us as well as other places! "KEEP ON KEEPIN ON"!
@12:28 why leave the shell there? Karma 2 seconds after! 💥
Saludos amigos desde chile excelente canal👌👍🇨🇱
please add more episodes like this! 🤙
LOL When a 2 year old bird dog walks stiff and sore it's one tired dog.
Who else thinks these guys should feature some wolf hunts?!
Crew Clark yes!!
My humble opinion is while wolf hunting is at times necessary and legal, it shouldn't necessarily be celebrated as a spectacle and chronicled like this tv show does. Just my opinion.... I'm a hunter who know what conservation is etc and killing predators is a part of that... not sure it needs to be showcased...your thoughts?
I agree Peter. Also keeping predator hunting off the mainstream gives less ammo and emotional response from the anti hunting community!
You said growing up you either went to church on Sunday or went hunting. For myself I think those two things are one in the same. Hunting and the taking of life should be a spiritual experience.
14:43 That's the damn truth. Meat or fish, if you work your ass off, it always tastes better.
Seems weird to have MeatEater without Steven.
Thanks for this video. Really shows the landscape. What game vest is Danielle using? Looks cool.
He's a certified good boi
Was the new hunter that went along able to bag any birds? Love it when you take the new hunters along. I would have liked to have heard his perspective on the hunt. Great show and episode.
Ya, Jon was able to knock a bird down and they cooked it that afternoon. A great introduction to some hard bird hunting.
Amazing
footage!
Miss my GSP molly she was a great dog thanks for sharing this video 👊🏻
More upland videos, please.
"got it" ...gangster grab... well earned
I really like the narration Janis aka Janice. Well done Zero point Zero!
Walking on the grass out there is like walking on greased plastic, no matter how slight the grade. Morgan...pick up your shells. If you've been hunting birds your whole life you should know better and be able to control your excitement in the field better than that. Maybe position Danielle for some more shots next time around too? She is a hard working young lady who hunts just as well as she cooks.
I swear this Morgan fella bears a strong on camera & narration resemblance to ole Rinella.
Jacob Ashe, he’s trying but there’s only one steve rinella
@@serhatcetinkaya1905 truth.
That dog has nuts. Haven't seen them in awhile.
Just watching you climb those hills is physically tiring me...great job guys!
The best wild wing shooting beside pigeon, by far. However those cuts are what you should shoot first.
Nice, nice!
Grew up on the flint hills of Kansas huh I live in kansas and on the edge of the flint hills I do a bit of bird hunting mainly quail and dove but personally I love to hunt squirrels and whitetails
Gotta get some mountaineering boots so you don't fall. Also a collapsible silicone bowl saves a ton of water for your dog.
Been waiting for another one of these!
Matt is the ideal chukar hunter. Tall and 90% legs! 😂
My legs hurt watching this!
Travel light, a couple of light weight side by sides are ideal for that type of hunting.
Work the dog, if he indicates then walk up behind him and when your ready push him in.
Really hope those fired shells were picked up. Pretty upsetting seeing trash left behind.
You know what's worse than leaving shells behind? Losing birds because you' re too worried about picking up shells. Keep your self righteous shit to yourself snowflake
@@batmantiss Jesus Christ bud, calm down there
Pretty easy to keep your hulls with a break barrel
Ha @batmantiss I hunt and fish more days than most people. Far from a snowflake just want to do my part in being able to keep public lands open. I've lost plenty of doves while hunting. Everyone needs to do there part and being respectful. Fella had a dog so thats whats what off-season is for. Huntin'em up with dead bird.
I fish hells canyon all the time, hell yeah!!!!
Chukar makes you work!!
She got to where she is on brains and effort
Love the content!
Excellent!!!!
Used to hunt Chuckars in the coastal hills of California. Hardest bird hunting I ever did, but we used to limit out on most days. Of course we were hiking in on creek beds to island BLM land where the birds were hardly hunted, if at all.
That's some tough sledding there. I would be over to moon to just get one. I would claim victory if that ever happened. Without a good dog forget it. Even if you down one good luck finding it in that grass.
Great original content please keep it up
Seriously, looks just identical to Central Otago NZ. A few chuckar here with the quail n pheasant to I've just discovered.
my home!
My man needed to get Danielle in a better shooting position. It's only fun if your partner gets one too
Full circle.
i'll run a few over on my way up to heller bar next time for you guys lol
I wonder what kind of bags those are that they're holstering birds in?
A solid 15 minutes of man-splaining by Morgan. Danielle had hunted chucker before.
Drives me insane to not see "Black Rifle Coffee" here... you fucks. Mat Best sent me here.
First thing the lady said explain’s my life I often go out work my ass off and if lucky will come home with one bird.😝
Definitely looks like a mandatory dog hunt
Nice job!
JO JO IN VT 💕😄
What kennel did you get your wirehair from?
Boy! That looks like fun?
You need a lab backer for wounded birds and running down old scent.
Hi from Turkey 👋🏻. Which boots do you wear on these hunts? I also hunt partridges and chukar. Your mountains are very similar to the mountains I hunted. sorry my english is bad. I'll buy boots for hunting.
Her shotty is absolutely gorgeous. His is cool, but I paused this on my TV to look at the metal on hers
The chuckars on the other side of the snake river are plentiful. 10 times more than hells canyon. but they either sit on the road and hardly flush or flush at 70 yards.
It taste so damn good is because Danielle cooked it lol
