This is not about Max, Lewis, Mercedes or Redbull this is about the direction this sport may go in. I am truly happy Max won, he had a great season and he has nothing to do with how it ended. But that last call was just pure nonsense. Letting just the cars between Ham and Verstappen unlap, so Max can attack but Sainz can’t? what about the other cars are they not important? Not waiting one more lap by the safety car as per rules. I do not care about that article that gives the racing director power “over the use of the safety car” bc that’s what’s worrying and sets a very dangerous precedent. So why do we have rules in the first place? On what should the teams base their strategies? A racing director should not care about entertainment he should care about following rules, leave drama to Netflix. And it was just the cherry on top, FIA has been inconsistent ALL season (first lap decision in this very last race, Brazil, Jeddah, Silverstone…you get it). Congrats to Max because he truly drove an amazing championship, but so did Lewis and i must say he took this with grace, many other drivers (come on just think about Schumacher for example in that situation) would have gone wild. Again the race director can override the sporting regulations at a whim to increase the excitement on the track even if it clearly and knowingly gives one competitor a massive advantage. How anyone can sit there and be like ‘yeah im fine with that’ is beyond me. Do we want to watch an actual sport or scripted entertainment like WWE?

      Nah
The race has to be decided on the track. Safety cars are in general unfair. A person loses all their advantage in the name of safety. The safety cars are there so that the race becomes interesting in the name of safety. This not having last lap just because lapped cars can unlap is stupid. The result that matters is verstappen and Hamilton. No one cares if Sainz will attack. The race has to be decided on the track and can’t end behind a safety car. Your quip should be with safety cars in general and not with this lapped cars business.

Verstappen has nothing to do with Fia decision. It drama between mercedes & Fia. But dragging Max through the mud is the new way of british Sportmanship after brexit I guess. If mercedes latifi had not crashed it would have been different. But he did crash at the most unlucky moment for Lewis. For Lewis that sucks big time. no ones going after Max, if you think Mercedes should've changed Lewis' tires then you need to look at the race again from Mercedes perspective. red bull kept changing the tires because they were the ones losing so they could afford the risks of being behind but Lewis who led the whole race couldn't take that risk since he'd lose track position. had Michael masi told from the start that they would unlap the cars in front of max from the beginning, Mercedes would've pitted but he didn't and instead decided it on the final lap. take the world title out of this (I personally do feel max deserved the title a bit more) but the Abu Dhabi gp should've been Lewis' win 100%. you'd have a difference of opinion only if max was on the receiving end of this and would've lose the race like how Lewis did.

A different perspective: The result WILL NOT be changed even if Masi followed the most optimal solution. Masi's first mistake is unlapping the cars at Lap 57 - should have done it at Lap 56 , which is the optimal solution. Note that the last marshal left the field when safety car is at at Turn 15 of Lap 56 - unlapping order should be issued right at that time (which means Masi had to make up the decision right before that). Then everything will be legetimate. He made the second mistake (unlapping only part of the cars without letting them get back to queue) to make it up for the first mistake, which became so controversial because people only focus on the second mistake alone.

    • @alsy0055

No matter what Mercedes appeal, including the outcome, Max should not & will not lose his World Champion status. It’s not his fault, nor Lewis or even Mercedes. Ultimately, Michael Masi made a poor decision and only he should be held accountable (i.e asked to resign). The decider for this extraordinary turn of events should have been, a red flag, both amazing driving equals on the same tyres and a restart. Instead, we got entertainment and controversy, over safety, consistency and fairness. Congratulations to Max and Lewis for an epic season. Hamilton came into the year in a car 0.4sec/lap slower than Verstappen, who qualified 0.4 seconds ahead of Hamilton, Sunday. Hamilton outdrove Verstappen, avoiding him where necessary all year to, deliver a masterclass in Abu Dhabi. It is because of his supreme ability the racing authorities handed the advantage to Verstappen in a contrived end to a race he'd given up winning. Never mind, I'm happy too. Max loses another 15 seconds by pitting (theoretically), and yet somehow ("racing gods") allowed him to be immediately behind Lewis with one lap to race. What it actually meant was that anything that tranpired in the previous 55 laps was cancelled. Lewis now on old hard tyres, with Max on fresh soft tyres, on Lewis's rear wing. "It's called racing" has always meant that a driver takes a natural time penalty for tyre changes. A driver gambles that his fresh tyres will be more advantageous than losing 15 seconds on the track. Max didn't take any sort of natural penalty for pitting. He was gifted a whole 25 seconds though.

Both drivers are worthy champions. I think what leaves a sour taste is how a decision (arguably controversial as this sequence under the safety car had never been executed this way before) that was made off the track had such an influence on the outcome of the championship. When they decided to not wait for all cars to unlap themselves, it is obvious they knew in advance that Verstappen had a clear advantage with his fresh softs. Equally, Sainz was P3 but had Daniel Ricciardo in front of him who wasn’t given the right to unlap himself, this means Sainz was drawn out of the picture for a potential win if both Lewins and Max had collided or scratched wings. Ultimately, Masi is the man that decided which way the championship would go and that’s wrong. Equally, an element that is unfair on Verstappen is after a season where he drove brilliantly, there will forever be a cloud over the circumstances that helped him win in Abu Dhabi.

But after Lewis’ chance to pit had passed they suddenly changed their decision that Only the lapped cars between Lewis and Max would be allowed to pass. They were put neck to neck. Lewis gained a lead initially but due to his 40 lap old hard tyres, he was no match for Max’s 1 lap old New Faster Soft tyres. And I mean the virtual Safety Car period where Max pitted. Not when they were under the SC, Merc leave Lewis out s because they are banking on the race is going to end with SC with that late crash, it didn't.
Also, the lap car decision does not actually affect Max and Lewis, it affected more for P3, 4 and 5, because they only let the one that between Lewis and Max thru, when the rules stated that they should let any lapped car thru if they had decided to do it, which would be the same vis-a-vis Lewis and Max. If Carlos or Yuki may have a case if they want to protest that decision, that's okay, Lewis does not have a standing on that because they would have clear the 4 cars between them anyway if the lapped were pull
And no, FIA rules clearly stated that the race director have sole discretion on how Safety Car was deployed. Massi don't want the race to end with Safety Car, that's his discretion, and that is completely allowed as per FIA rules. And you can't blame Massi for it either, he have a tough job, if he let the SC out and pull it back at the end of 58, Lewis win by default, and Max's fan would accuse of him for favouring Lewis, and that would be even worse than what he did now because that would be by default. At least here, what Massi done is make sure they both have 1 clean lap of race, and Lewis lost, that's just it.

If Mercedes has pitted Lewis, he will came out second,, because Max will not go in and race will go to the end under Safety car. There was no time the situation to be cleared using the rules about Safety car for race restart. In that situation Mercedes have noting to protest.
Look early this season and previous seasons all the situation when Safety car was on the track. How long it stayed on the track. What about race in Saudi Arabia? How much laps it was out and after that RED FLAG because Advertised papers have bean destroyed (cut)?
What about two laps in Spa and race over under safety car and giving a victory and half points for that?
Why RedBull retired Perez car before that decision for one lap race on?
Too much unanswered and enigma questions ...
For me, Mercedes made mistake for pitting Lewis too early. He was on mediums and they needed to leave him longer on the first sting. In that case he will not go in that situation with Perez, and he will have free pit stop under Virtual Safety car and in that last lap only about 18 laps old tires (about 4 to 6 laps of them under Virtual safety car and Safety car) the situation will be different (No DRS in that lap).
I hope Ferrari, McLaren, Alpine and some other teams will fix the cars so there will be more drivers fighting for victories. In that case I will see what will be when Max will going like torpedo in them. We know that situation from Austria with Leclerc and what Leclerc did next race in Silverstone.

What about the wrong tactics that Mercedes did keeping lewis on the track on the yellow flags? I think that's a mix of bad decisions from Mercedes with amazing team work from Red Bull. While in the radio, Michael said that "Wait a minute, waiting for my guys to clean the track"... so, the decision to make the cars pass the safety car was already on the table. Still had one lap to go so, why not give the fans what they deserve and paid for? A Race? If Mercedes had the right tires on, this story would be totally different on my point of view. I like both drivers but this year, Lewis is annoying. Max deserved the title.

Letting them do a final lap shoot out where max had brand new soft tires and Lewis had 40 lap old hards basically ensured a max win. They should have red flagged, let drivers put new tires on, then restart and do a one lap race where winner takes all.

@@Bavariaria Merc did expect it to possibly go green and didn't pit regardless....they hoped it didn't have time to go green and win that way. Had they pitted and it finished under sc that would have given RB power to make a decision about position Vs equal tires.
A sc at that stage of the race was RB golden situation regardless how it would end....Merc could never win anything...but had a chance to not loose (by winning the race behind sc).
Red flags and SC should never be used for competition "fairness". It is a safety thing and should be treated as such. Fia made their decision try to race once the track was clear..and so they did. And merc lost due to picking the wrong choice.
Gutting, sure...but fair, nothing necessitated a red flag. It's not the first time things like this have happened but in most cases they hade time to sort out all lapped cars.

But it's easy to call it now with all the time in the world and a chill head. In the end, the title went for the one who risked. And nobody seems to be talking about the incident in the first lap too. Hamilton did not give Verstappen the delta he was suppose to after the awkward overtake of Max in Turn 6. And being behind the slipstream could have changed the outcome of the race too. Redbull didn't need a miracle, they just needed the FIA to put in the fix, which the FIA did, not unlike professional wrestling!

Compared to what Ballestre did to Senna in Japan in 1989 and 1990 this was quite discreet, for Ballestre was incredibly blatant about handing Prost the title. Maybe Hamilton should calm his heart down in consolation that his hero Senna had it much worse than he did just now.

The issue is; FIA wanted to let mercedes and RB race from the start of the season. This created a horrible metric for future incidents. At bahrain, Lewis went offtrack countless of times, winning seconds, Max overtook him and had to give the position back.
Admittedly, the last race was handled poorly. But I think FIA had a debt to pay towards Max, and regarding earlier incidents. I think FIA thought not interferring would benefit the title fight. Then Max got a bit unlucky when RB was slihgtly better. Then brazil came, and suddenly Max was in a horrible position. No match for the merc, if nothing was going to happen, or he didn't give it all (and in the process go over the edge sometimes) he'd automaticly lose.
So how the race was handled, bad, but in terms of the entire season, it was good. My suggestions for next season would be; LESS politics by teams. Clearer rules by FIA, and more consistency about these rules. - This has to be handled firmly from race 1.
Simply all these incidents going Max's way in the later part of the season, makes it look like he's the lucky guy. People, and specially the media don't put things into context, hungry sellout media. Lewis couldn't believe Max could change his tyres at saudi, red flag. Yet he himself changed his front wing, his tyres AND caught up an entire lap at imola. - Quickly forgotten by a lot.
Neither Lewis or Max can be blamed for this. Both gave us an INSANE season. Like Lewis said, this was his hardest season, his best self. It's too bad this last race gets magnified by the media, withotu context of the rest of the season, and it takes away from Max's championship. Like the hamiltons showed us, be graceful in defeat.
Let's just hope next season, FIA is more consistent and clear, and we have less politics and backroom shady stuff going on. Like bernie ecclestone said; how the media handled Max wasn't fair either. Portrayed as the villain even tho he got by DNF's and in an uphill battle at brazil and after. My last suggestion would then be; Please media, stop being such a hungry sellout, treat people fair, wether it's Lewis or Max.
I'm seriously excited for 2022. Let's hope the cars allow for more racing. And let's hope 2021 was the start of a beautiful new era of F1.

Cool, but they broke regulations in Abu Dhabi to give Verstappen the win, and in Bahrain Verstappen gave the position back himself

If they had a debt to Max they paid it by not disqualifying him in Saudi. Any other driver in any other racing class would've had their season ended for that dangerous braking move.

The Bahrain example you're using is a lie. Hamilton was allowed to do so and so were all the other drivers. Then Redbull moaned mid-race and the switched the rule but before that it was perfectly legal.
