  • This week Alison is joined by journalist and author of “We Need to Talk About Money” Otegha Uwagba to discuss finances. Is a lab grown diamond less meaningful than a mined one? What do I do about my friend’s constant comments about my finances? How do I help a friend budget? Why do women have to spend so much on grooming? And when is that fancy farmer’s market produce worth it? Together, Otegha and Alison explore how to navigate financial differences, the ever-expensive cost of big city living, making your jewelry anti-capitalist, and much more. Call 856-502-4816 to solicit advice on a future episode. Solicited Advice is brought to you with distribution and revenue support from the Talkhouse network.

Impressed at the patient non judgemental answer to q1! I would not have managed such restraint. Strikes me as a wildly silly thing to be bothered by - but I guess congratulations to you if that's the best money related quandary you can muster up. You're doin' better than I am! I've been wed nearly a year and we still haven't bothered to buy rings.

Yeah I don't think I could have kept my mouth shut. The caller was extremely immature, spending even more than $400 on jewelry for a partner is completely insane to me. Spend the money on experiences together or invest for your future.

Wouldn’t you want to marry someone who’s smart with their money?

How can anyone discount the ethical considerations in the 21st century? This feels really 20th century 1st world - I'm sorry, but ugh. You were both extremely patient & kindly.

Some pushback from the hosts would have been nice. My girlfriend made me listen to this on a a long drive... and the ring wasn't even the worst one.... how about caller #2, who turned her nose up at her maid of honor for suggesting less expensive wedding party activities -- and then shamed her friend for feeling uncomfortable around luxury spending? Lost her job, had an expensive wedding, started a basic baking substack, and still went on a post-wedding friend vacation to London? If you can have a wedding, lose your job, not get a new job, go on a honeymoon (presumably), and still go on an additional vacation where you're luxury shopping in an expensive European city two months later... you objectively have a lot of financial freedom. And if you're aware your best friend/maid of honor was on a budget during the wedding.... have some grace? Or at least understand how it looks.
All terribly self-centered callers who wanted to feel better about wanting unethical diamond rings coupled with unnecessary spending and others alienating their friends who earn less money. Rough one.

The ring one is so wild! I mean this genuinely and kindly: the only 'person' who really cares about the cost of your ring is De Beers, and they are cackling like movie villains at how they've managed to convince you that giving them more money means your marriage is more meaningful.
