Funny you call out Alistair for not warning you about the darkspawn, and then he does later. It's funny because without the mod that fixes bugs Alistair NEVER warns you.
The whole "dragon age" thing is the calendar system. The current year is 9:30 Dragon. Meaning it is the 30th year of the 9th century, which is named the Dragon Age. Each of the nine ages, each century, is given a name by the Divine (basically, the Chantry's pope, but female) in the final year of the preceding Age by looking for "signs or portents of things to come." Some of the other age names are Glory (the first), Towers, Storm and the previous one (Age 8) was Blessed. Another age you'll hear is Ancient. It's basically our version of BC or BCE. So the year -500 Ancient would be five centuries prior to the Chantry's founding, and thus 1430 years ago. The Chantry is the major religious institution in the world, Thedas. By which I mean it's the only one that it allows to exist (the elves had their faith purged and only the Dalish tribes retain anything). So basically, the catholic church from the middle ages. The calendar starts from the Chantry's founding as well. So since the year is 9:30 Dragon, it has been 930 years since the Chantry was officially founded. That's why the Divine (the girl pope) get's to name the next century. Though the Tevinter Imperium (you'll find out about them later) has it's own calendar system. According to the wiki the current year according to Tevinter is 2024.
Well, Grey Wardens is a basically a mix between religious order, secret society and military order like a Night's Watch, so yeah, some "cult shit" for sure. Also, it's more then just drinking darkspawn blood, most miss it, but Duncan actually says at the beginning that mages "finished preparations". Morrigan has also nice empathic personality, real people's person
ooh by the way, rogues in dragon age work best if they're attacking from behind an enemy (the black part of the enemy's "red circle"), as well as attacking from stealth that's where the top-down tactical view starts to get super useful
Just to add to that: the reason rogues work best that way is because their melee attacks deal damage with every hit as if they were critting if they attack a target from behind. The game shows the backstab angle on the enemy's indicator circle, too.
If you are want for inventory space, you can equip stuff like secondary weapon sets or arrows. Equipped items do not count against the inventory limit.
Increasing Defense through dexterity or talents is very important for shield tanks like Alistair. It may be easy to be overread but defense increases your chance to block or dodge incoming blows. A lower chance to get hit is sometimes more vital than a huge amount of health.
1:14:41 Maybe my favorite moment in the game. I love this character introduction. She is so calm and you can tell she has no fear of the 4 armed men below her. And the voice actress is perfect! I loved your initial response...I can totally relate.
There is an option for removing the blood splatter from characters' faces during dialogue. Disable persistent gore. Might want to consider it because there's a lot of blood and talking in the game :D Also, you can click on the codex notifications in the bottom left corner to directly open the new entry.
Some unsolicited advice: You are a rogue, don't prioritize strenght too much, when you see weapons that need certain strenght to use that is because they are meant for warriors, while strenght is always useful you are going to need dextery and cunning more to be able to unlock talents so you should level up those more before spending more points on strength or other things. When choosing skill points you should know that you will not have enough points to unlock everything and that your companions also have skills, so you probably should prioritize personal skills for your character like combat training (you really need this) and coercion or you may not have enough points for them later when you may need them, other skills like trap making, poisons, herbolism while all of them useful you can just make a companion learn them so you don't need to waste your points learning all of them. For example you don't need to be the one making potions a companion can maximize that and make them for you. And yes, you definitely need to sell things when you can because it always hurts if you find yourself with an inventory full and having to destroy things, you can lose SO MUCH MONEY if you don't remember to sell things and make space in your inventory. I'm surprised you didn't just run to the shop the moment you arrived at camp to try to sell things, always make sure you have good space in the inventory and buy any backpack you see because there is a limited number of them in the game and you are really going to NEED the space (I think is already too late to buy the one you saw previously). Also, you can wear two weapon equipments, look at it in equipements, I don't know if maybe you already changed in the next video but in this one you are only wearing one and if you need space just equiping some sh*t in the second one means a little more inventory space.
I love how Dragon Age and Mass Effect using same voice actors 😄 Morrigan = Admiral Xen + Matriarch Aethyta. Loghain = Admiral Gerrel. Leske = Keiji Okuda. And soooooo many more!!
The VA who voices Leske is Varric's VA also, right? Also somewhere in the previous video I heard the lady who voices Female Hawke in DA2, and Ciri in Witcher 3
A little tip on Rogue melee combat Mapocololops to help you out, Have your character position directly behind your target's back when you attack. This makes you character do an "overhead backstab" animation that is always a bonus damage hit. You can see this hit difference in the damage numbers which are bold and bigger in size than regular damage numbers. Also, your backstab animation is very different from you regular attacks. Ideally, you would want Alistair to draw attention (aggro) to an enemy to which you will backstab easily (Sandwich the target between you and the tank).
Slight correction: it's not a critical hit, it just does damage as if it was a critical hit. Which is not a big difference but it does matter when interacting with certain effects.
You don't have to look for bold and bigger numbers. Just attack where the black ribbon is on the back of an enemy's target circle. Any rogue attacking within that band will do a backstab (if their activated features allow for it.)
I first played this game before watching Star Trek Voyager. Going through another playthrough now after having watched the show, and I can't listen to Morrigan's mother talk without hearing Captain Janeway.
Character work is such a high point in this game. I think we all remember our first Joining... this is "dark" fantasy done right, with a true sense of danger grounded in solid world building, rather than simply being brutal for brutality's sake. Even the scripted sequence of death has a kind of believable intensity and sense of choice to it. Morrigan's mother is played by Kate Mulgrew, Janeway from Voyager. Very fun cameo.
I love Morrigan so much she is such a great character. BioWare really knows how to make compelling characters. I was so happy to see how you reacted to meeting her 😂

Yeah I play the game pure vanilla, and the only bug that I would actually matter that I've seen, and can easily reproduce is the Spoilers The Compaion Quest for Sten, the game allows you to do it out of order, but if you do, you won't be able to actually get Sten's sword. And so you risk soft locking out being able to complete the quest, or reload and do the quest in the full order.
Qwinn mostly fixes dialogues that never trigger because of bad conditions (or stuff that are cut for no apparent reason), not sure if this is one of them. I've played through it with the mod multiple times and never had anything like this either.
I dont know if it was mentioned but I think there is a option to hide the helmet you have equipped. Means you can still get the stats from the helmet but not the appearance. I'm loving watching you play through this. This is the game that got me into fantasy in a big way.

For controlling the party the most comfortable way is F1 - F4 so you don't have to move the mouse over top left I think you could shift + F keys to select more than one also
In my head after your intro played i thought the way you, Alistar, Duncan and the other intitiates were lined up like a medieval boy band or something.
Given how broken stealth is, how movement in DAO works, and how "backstab dps superiority" myth is I would say he is not missing on much if anything. DAO is one of those games in which general theory =/= game reality.
There are some prequel books by David Gaider that tell more of Teyrn Loghain and King Maric. Though I would recommend reading them after playing the game.
You've read it already in codex entires but incase you didn't really notice, backstabs are a thing. As a rogue you'll want to try to keep your character behind the enemy as much as you're able to keep your damage up. You don't need to be behind them however if you can keep them stunned.
Great video mapo :D I havn't really watched anyone play DA origins before and it was many many years since i played it myself, but remembering more of it now after watching this video and the part 2, for rpg enthusiasts such as myself this really is such a great game for a lets play, so much entertaining dialogue all the way through. As a fun little sidenote, some years after i played through this game i got really into an unknown, non mainstream sc-fi show called Farscape and after 2 seasons i realized one of the main characters was the voice actor for Morrigan. She is great and honestly looks very very similar to Morrigan in real life (if she cosplayed as a witch baddie :D) especially when she was younger, almost makes you think they based her appearance on her. I dunno if thats true, but if it is, that's awsome :D I anyone wants to compare just google Aeryn Sun Farscape. :D
not show how many you've had backlogged, but just another reminder to attack from behind: the black area in the red ring around enemies is where it counts for backstab.
You should get the Quiet Battle Dialog and maybe the Quiet Battle Music mod to deal with most audio volume issues. The rest you will just have to lower effects for. Spent a lot of hours modding this over the years, generally use these mods as a base along with Qwinn's Fixpack and Dain's Fixes (QoL stuff).
Duncan did not want to kill Jory, but he was obligated to by his oath. The ritual is a closely guarded secret since it involves consuming Darkspawn blood. If Jory refused to partake, he had to be executed, else he was a liability that could leak that information out. There are some who do know the joining is fatal, but not the reason why. I think The Chantry would deem it akin to blood magic, ergo, they'd want to wipe The Wardens out. The Chantry are PARANOID when it comes to magic, especially blood magic.
@@Fragenzeichenplatte The Wardens would deny the claims and because of their reputation, most nobles would be inclined to believe that the accuser is lying. The Chantry might investigate further in, but no doubt The Grey Wardens have contingies in place. Plus, The Chantry knows that Grey Wardens are necessary to deal with Blights, so aside from the off shot fanatic, the powers that be know that going at them is not worth the effort or resources.
Mapocolops: "Your praying in the bushes." Me: "Have you seen a toilet? She's doing what you would normally do in the bushes when camping and is hinting she doesn't want a male Dwarf watching her during it." Also did anyone else wince when Mapo started destroying items instead of just going back to Ostegar to sell them?
You should probably look into selling all the non-useful loot ASAP, as well as investing into some of those backpacks. I mean, you inventory was already nearly full with four characters, imagine how much worse it must be now.
Back after the end of the playthrough to watch Mapo rough and tough dwarf immediately turn to butter and propose marriage to Morrigan within seconds of seeing her. And then it was so 😅 Dragon Age Origins, the Dreams Do Come True run
This is the part of the game when I realized there were a few stars in the voice cast. Flemeth is voiced by Kathrine Mulgrew (also known as Red from orange is the new black and as Captain Janeway in star trek voyager) and Tim Curry plays a character too (I don't think you've gotten to that character yet so I'm trying not to spoil it).
I love that your going through this blind! I will ask you to keep your eyes open for gifts for your party members though! It is interesting to hear their commentary!
DLC items are super out of place and I always just throw them away (sell), because they subtract from intended game experience too much. When you later fight hard and find some loot it feels much less rewarding as they usually worse than your free dlc items.
Wearing the DLC items might not really break the game that much but if you don't want to wear them, you'll have a more accurate experience of gearing in a fresh, new playthrough. IIRC, at launch for each DLC, the first time you would receive those items was when you actually did the DLCs, so you wouldn't have access to them from the very start. You can think of them more as NG+ items because you would get them automatically added to your inventory on the second playthrough, after completing those DLCs.
There is a mod that fixes the loud battle music. 'Quiet Battle Music" over at Nexus. It just replaces the battle music audio file with a quieter version.
Good content. I have a suggestion. Ive played the game many times in my younger ages and i would say that if you dont play it on the highest difficulty you probably miss a lot of the game. Unless you are a very newby gamer in general and dont really understand rpgs the game is to easy on the lower difficulties. On the higher ones you really need to learn about crafting, potions, poision, resisstances, party composition, combos, tactics, strategie. Otherwise you just die. I mean you didnt even need to pause the game on combat to avoid dying, wich is one of the main "aspects" of the game (pausing and planning encounters). I highly recommend you to pick the highest difficulty for the next ones. Otherwise you will click and kill the whole game like on a hit and smash game. (Sorry for the bad englisch, its too late here xD)
Dude you need to think about your positioning. You can right click on the ground to move a character to that position. And only you tank should be in the front arc of enemies. If you are going to play it like this I reccomend lowering the difficulty to easy cause otherwise the game is going to be damn difficult.

Ah, Morrigan. A classic case of nerd bait. Perfect reaction.
Perverts unite!
Ahhh Claudia Black's voice is just...
"Marriage? Marriage please?"
That is a proper greeting upon meeting Morrigan.
These videos bring me so much joy, so excited for everything else to come! Keep up the great work!
Reaction to Morrigan is almost as good as Reaction to Garrus. 🤣
For controlling the party the most comfortable way is F1 - F4 so you don't have to move the mouse over top left
I think you could shift + F keys to select more than one also
In my head after your intro played i thought the way you, Alistar, Duncan and the other intitiates were lined up like a medieval boy band or something.
Kind of amazed the game doesn't have a back stab tutorial or guide so far, so Mapo just plays like a warrior right now. 😂
He'll get there haha. I'm liking his jack of all trades approach so far. It's fun.
Given how broken stealth is, how movement in DAO works, and how "backstab dps superiority" myth is I would say he is not missing on much if anything. DAO is one of those games in which general theory =/= game reality.
Your humor makes this an even better experience
There are some prequel books by David Gaider that tell more of Teyrn Loghain and King Maric. Though I would recommend reading them after playing the game.
You've read it already in codex entires but incase you didn't really notice, backstabs are a thing. As a rogue you'll want to try to keep your character behind the enemy as much as you're able to keep your damage up. You don't need to be behind them however if you can keep them stunned.
Don't forget that you can set tactics so that they automatically use poultices.
The problem with that is they tend to use them super fast :))

She is great and honestly looks very very similar to Morrigan in real life (if she cosplayed as a witch baddie :D) especially when she was younger,
almost makes you think they based her appearance on her. I dunno if thats true, but if it is, that's awsome :D
I anyone wants to compare just google Aeryn Sun Farscape. :D
not show how many you've had backlogged, but just another reminder to attack from behind: the black area in the red ring around enemies is where it counts for backstab.
"Mell wet."
Liked and shared.
Dragon age does indeed refer to the time period it's the 9th age of the world of Thedas
I love Claudia Black and Kate Mulgrew. I remember my first reaction to Flemeth was, "Is that Red from Orange is the New Black?" And it was 😂
Glad you met Mommy. I mean Morrigan.
Welcome to the Morrigan simp squad, lovely to have you here.
Did he ever figure out backstab?
not yet)
ahhh love your reaction to Morrigan
What prevents a Warden from leaking it? Nothing, really.
@@Fragenzeichenplatte Loyalty to the order. It's also common knowledge that the joining is fatal. They just don't know the details.
@@LukaBlight69 But what if a Warden isn't loyal?
@@Fragenzeichenplatte The Wardens would deny the claims and because of their reputation, most nobles would be inclined to believe that the accuser is lying.
The Chantry might investigate further in, but no doubt The Grey Wardens have contingies in place. Plus, The Chantry knows that Grey Wardens are necessary to deal with Blights, so aside from the off shot fanatic, the powers that be know that going at them is not worth the effort or resources.
@@LukaBlight69 Well, if they don't believe a Warden who completed the Joining, why would anyone believe someone who didn't even join?
Mapocolops: "Your praying in the bushes."
Me: "Have you seen a toilet? She's doing what you would normally do in the bushes when camping and is hinting she doesn't want a male Dwarf watching her during it."
Also did anyone else wince when Mapo started destroying items instead of just going back to Ostegar to sell them?
God damn you, now I want to play this game again! I always loved the strategy and leveling in this game!
Wonder by what episode will he find out how to backstab))))
What a nonsense, why does a rogue need backstabs, when he can charge into battle as a true dwarven warrior.. with daggers lol=)

This was my exact reaction when I played this game for the first time more than ten years ago.
My boy simping hard for the sneaky witch thief hahahaha
Everyone becomes monke once they meet morrigan. The type of reaction I had as well xD
"this is some weird cult shit"
Strap in lad, it only gets weirder.
You are every gamer's reaction to Morrigan. I love it. Can I get a George Takei "Helloooooooooo"?
You forgot to but x2 backpack from quartermaster. 1 during daytime and 2 during night. Now you gonna be stuck with 70 item inventory
I love that your going through this blind! I will ask you to keep your eyes open for gifts for your party members though! It is interesting to hear their commentary!
Keep up the great content mapo!!!
I'm such a hoarder I always buy 2 backpacks from the quartermaster, 1 before the wilds and the 2nd after he restocks...
Yes, lockpicking was a priority.
love at first sight
Haven't seen Easier Autorun and Tab Highlight Toggles mod recommended in the comments yet, so.
ALWAYS buy the BACKPACK SPACE! lol ... AND for the love of God, put points in cunning. ;)
You might remember Alistair and Morrigan's voice actors from Uncharted 2.
PART 3 IS HERE. LET'S FUCKIN GOOOOOO!
Yeah that Morrigan reaction seems about right.
I don't know what it is about dark haired bitchy sorceresses that awakens these feelings in me, but it happens every time
thank you for this episode!:)
The best one for not flinching during the joining is ogren in dragon age awakening
DLC items are super out of place and I always just throw them away (sell), because they subtract from intended game experience too much. When you later fight hard and find some loot it feels much less rewarding as they usually worse than your free dlc items.
Simp central here
There is a mod to let you hide your helm if you want to keep faces visible.
He fell harder for Morrigan than I did. Marriage? Buy the lady a drink first, man. XD
Those dlc items in most games are overpowered for a fresh start
If you are going to play it like this I reccomend lowering the difficulty to easy cause otherwise the game is going to be damn difficult.
it's simpin' time
