Nice to see the language cleaned up on Trance. I've seen so many DMs say that just because elves only need to meditate for four hours, that doesn't mean they get to complete a long rest in that time - just that they can be awake for the rest of it.

@@jaesjmes5498 bc a long rest is defined as an 8 hr period of light activity, like sleeping or taking watch. elfs dont need to sleep they trance for 4 hrs , it did not say however they get the benefits of a long rest after the period of trance, thus still requiring the additional 4hrs of light activity. imo having long rest resolve at different times is bad design especially considering how much people bicker about short vs long rest already not to mention the benefits are very situational and depend on the dm and players. if you rest in dungeons a lot and have problems with wandering monsters interrupting your rest all the time then maybe dont long rest in dungeons. what are the odds your attacked after your trance instead of before? its 50/50 at best and i know as a dm i would not let 1 or 2 players get their rest and cuck the others bc the other players are gonna still want their rests so i would really just be slowing the game down at that point.

@@dragoninthewest1 they could always do light activities after trance , the tension came from people thinking a 4hr trance was the equivalent of a long rest even though trance lacked that specific language, 5.5 version of trance is very clear in intention which is good, though personally i think its a poor design choice, which to me is bad. This has broadly been my general impression of 5.5 some good changes some bad changes, some changes that are not really changes, some changes that make you wonder what da hail and a lot of broken or bad stuff they just ignored.

Large Form is only once per day, but it is such a powerful feature. With squeezing rules not appearing in the 2024 PHB this is great for blocking doorways and corridors, allowing you to grapple larger creatures and the best part the new Emanation spells. Since Spirit Guardian and the like trigger when the Emanation enters a creature's space, the creature enters the Emanation space or ends it's turn in it, all the 'old' ways like Telekinetic or Grasp of Hadar to double dip damage are gone. Now you want to move the effect into a creature on your turn and then retreat so they have to walk into it (at least for melee enemies), which works a lot better if you are large and cover more area with your Emanation or can make yourself the only available target with your size. Of course control spells can make it so creatures end their turn in it, but Large Form is a great asset for Emanation focused casters!

I playtested a Goliath with Frost Giant lineage (Frost's Chill) Daolock and I can confirm Frost's Chill was really good at shutting down melee enemies with Spike Growth during a Mines of Phandelver campaign. I could have also gone with Hill's Tumble, but I really only missed it vs flying enemies. Otherwise, the extra cold damage, the slow and pushing from Eldritch Blast were more than enough especially since we had a wizard in the party who had Ray of Frost. We took care of entire encounters meant to be really difficult just by mostly using cantrips.

I think that overall the quality of each species has been increased, but the rising tide has raised some boats higher than others. Humans are still a #1 contender for any build because you can get your two perfect Origin Feats.
But if you're a caster, literally any caster, and optimizing... I don't see how you don't pick High Elf without missing out on incredible options. No one else gets that kind of cantrip buffet, and two spells that are just universally useful, and the free cast itself is crazy too. Detect Magic is always looking to be a ritual, but how often do you cast that each day? Now once, just an action, no circumstantial barriers from ritual cast time, no resource cost. And of course, Misty Step is Misty Step. This is strictly better on a caster than a Human taking Magic Initiate as an extra feat unless you actually need both Cleric and Druid cantrips to make it work.... and, seriously, not likely.
Sure, other species do get useful spells, but I really don't know why they didn't apply long rest cantrip selection to other elves. Druid for Wood, Cleric for Drow. Still not as good as having any wizard, but they'd at least stick out. Nope, Druidcraft, Dancing Lights. Worthless by comparison and a wood elf getting the honestly boinked new Shilleleigh doesn't strike me as that big of a deal.

  • @Golmov_the_Wretched

I disagree with the idea that High Elf is the worst elven subrace. Granting a cantrip of your choice means you can get blade ward on a martial character without using feats, and that spell is now much better than it used to be. Misty step is a top-tier option, and I'm fairly certain you can cast detect magic as a ritual as well.
Personally, I think the Drow is the weakest of the three. Not in an individual sense, but you really need the right sort of party to get the most out of them whereas the other subraces will work fine pretty much anywhere.

They cram in so much from say Tasha sourcebook and at the same time argue against say, races, species and class addititions from other source books + homebrews. Like Gem dragon ancestries for Draconic Sorcery which they even forgot to add in Fizbans, the VERY same book that revitalized Gem dragons and added gem dragonborns😂 such oversight😡

Orcs are probably one of the premier choices for strength based martials now, especially Fighter and Barbarian. Access to Short Rest BA Dash plus a small temp HP buffer, an if I recall buffed Endurance and even some boosted darkvision. In a game where you can’t really use mounts effectively (ladder filled dungeons, Spelljammer, aggressive AoE monsters, DMs just simply not allowing you to get one for whatever reason, rest of the party not wanting mounts, etc) it’s a serious option. Speedy and Charger combo with it very well to get 100+ foot movement rounds while still allowing for damage.
It’s honestly one of the first martials I want to play under the new rules is a simple Orc Champion Fighter tank build.

I think Aasimar's new transformation choice is mechanically better for them but WAY worse thematically, since before they'd likely have to go through a whole ordeal to get it changed before, but it could be an opportunity for fun characterization
Guess now one could still have Fallen/Protector/Scourge Aasimar but flavored to still have all 3 abilities, such as a Protector Aasimar using Necrotic Shroud to sap the strength from their foes so they don't harm their allies
I also think that Dragonborn's new flight is a bit...much? Gem Dragonborn got a similar ability but it lasted a far shorter one minute, though they could also hover.
I also think the breath weapon being part of an attack action, while making it far better for martials (a part lifted from FTD), it is certainly weaker for casters, as well as the fact that it scales like a cantrip is still a bit whack, though it's damage is far better then the 2014 version (another buff also lifted from FTD) Regardless, casters and martials alike can benefit from flight.
Wonder if the other ancestry stuff from Fizbans is gonna make any kind of comeback though...

    • @prasiolite
      @prasiolite 24 дня назад +1

Dragonborn getting 10 minutes of flight is so overpowered and unnecessary. They should get 1 minute like the Aasimar (and Fizban's Dragonborn subraces). It feels like an error that got overlooked since it makes them far outshine literally anything else just for that. How the hell does a dragon-person get to fly for 10x as long as a half-angel can?

Hear me out, a gnome makes it so druids don't need speak with animals prepared, or to waste a spell slot on it whenever people inevitably look at them for that thing. It also gives a free minor illusion cantrip, which pairs nicely with its small size. Then, the druid also gets access to cheap, useful mounts like donkeys, and potential flying options. Because of minor illusion, wildshape also becomes a far slipperier option (make a rock, transform in the rock, sneak out) and you may be able to cast minor illusion while wildshaped (I think wildshape still allowed you to keep all class and ratial features a form could support, but I don't know how far you can stretch that)
I still think that there are better druid options though, namely, the elf (in any of its varieties I'd argue). It either adds new important options (like minor illusion again) or offloads the burden of some of the druid auto-include spells and cantrips (detect magic, possibly druidcraft?, pass without trace, etc.)
Humans can also do something similar, but also can provide alert, musician, or healer rather than magic initiate

Every RPG struggles with how to do humans because we can't imagine being anything else. So we take for granted all of humans' amazing, unique abilities. Humans have significantly higher trauma resistance than most other microscopic species, and our bodies don't give in to death under extremis like other species. Our immune system is far and away one of the best on the planet. We can adapt to almost any environment, which has far more biological requirements that we realize. We just give all of the abilities that only exist in humans, and logically only would exist in humans, over to every other sentient species, and then wonder why we have nothing unique for ourselves.

Thunderclap cantrip specifies that the spell does not hit the caster.
Radiant Consumption from MMOM and "Inner Radiance" both state neither specification.
According to Crawford if neither is stated, the source is not affected. I've always ruled it that the source gets to choose whether or not to be affected.
Radiant Consumption and Inner Radiance both still friendly-fire. It's not too bad.

I think calling Stone's Endurance bad is wrong. Like yeah, it's not the strongest option there, but on a character that otherwise doesn't have a lot of Reaction competition, 1d12+Con damage reductuon against any source of damage up to 6 times a day is really strong. Its especially good at low levels, where you can potentially just totally neutralize an entire attack against you. I used this feature so much on my Goliath Barbarian in a campaign i played recently. The way it works in tandem with resistance is really funny, allowing you to take what would otherwise be a crit that would do 60 damage and filter it all the way down to doing like 15 with a decent roll.

I am glad to see Dragonborn actually be so good now. It feels like in 2014 they were just straight up afraid of the breath weapon being an AoE and nerfed it into the ground to make it useless because they imagined you must be hitting like 10 people with it every time or something lol. Now its actually usable, they get darkvision like they should, *and* they even managed to incorporate a way for you to have wings without it being busted like the bird people with hard to spell names.
But overall I think that these races are way cooler now. I know it was controversial for a bit I think removing stats from races was ultimately a positive move because it mean that they could focus more on adding much cooler and more flavorful abilities to each race in order to better distinguish them. And now it's easier to play just whatever you want with whatever class.

    • @NateFinch

I think this video over-hypes the breath weapon. I have been using it in our current campaign and 1d10 or 2d10 a couple times a day is just super meh. It almost never kills anything, so you're really just spreading out less damage than your normal attack would do.
It's just way too easy to roll low and have it basically be rounding error.

Let's say a creature hits you for 30 points of damage. You reduce that down to 15 due to rage and then you use Stone's Endurance to reduce it further. If we have a con mod of +4, then that's an average of 10 - 11
Meaning that we just reduced 30 damage down to 4 or 5. That's nothing to scoff at.

I always feel like flight should have some drawbacks.. like being easier to hit with ranged weapons, and when hit, you might fall or make an emergency landing. But the biggest problem is simply overcoming terrain obstacles. It's just another thing that makes D&D harder for DM's to think up encounters for. I mean we all know the spell list is Gross for dm's already lol, I guess that innate flying is really just a drop in the, DM hell ocean, that is D&D.

I like Mage Slayer's "legendary resistance" for mental saves, but since the feat increases either Strength or Dexterity, it's a bit harder to pick it at lower levels on a spellcaster (especially now there are so many half-feats for mental stats - even War Caster became one of those).
