    This reminds me of the story of the guys who absolutely rinsed bookmakers by betting on Pro golf events to have a hole-in-1. Some bookies used to look up the clubhouse stats for the course being played, and calculate the odds of a hole-in-1 from these stats - not considering that those figures are largely produced from amatuer players and pros playing the course should have a far higher likelyhood of a hole-in-1. The moral being that Elite pro sportpeople are usually significantly better than a purely theoretical analysis would suggest.

    • @paddyk3079

    The average score of a 100 includes the pro player aiming for doubles and singles to set up doubles at the end of legs. It's not a true representation of aim. It might not be all that far off, but the best way to track this stat would be to only look at the percentage of trebles hit on the first 3-6 darts of each leg.

    I think the probability of the best pro dart players to hit treble or double is close to 50% IF they are "in the zone" but it's still very unlikely to hit a 9 darter, you not only need to be in a flow state you need a lot of luck on top of that

      thats stil (0.5^9) which is approx 0.2% or 1 in 500. To win the PDC Worlds, you need 96 legs (assuming you win all sets in 3 legs). so you only have a 1 in 5 chance with a 50% hit rate. van gerwens perfect 17 is out of this world.

I can't imagine that it is always the T20, since it is right next to 1&5 and newbies might just miss the board completely half the time, when aiming so far up and are better off aiming at the bulls eye. Also I think it would be interesting to simulate the average over the normal distribution, to see how exactly it behaves and why. Cheers :)

    An interesting thing to consider when thinking about the theoretical amateur attempting the 9 darter: how much better/more accurate would they get during the sheer amount of time it would take them to hit one, and how would it change the estimated amount of time for them to get one... my assumption is that given this person doesn't get tired and is capable of throwing darts all day and night without breaks, they'd have to improve to the skill level of "decent" within a couple days, right?

    Very interesting! Would be nice to see how these estimates compare to the number of 9 dart finishes seen professionally. Seems like maybe the two biggest shortcomings of the model are the assumption of uniformity in the parameters of the model (some doubles are harder than others so, for example, you could adjust the variance of the normal distribution as you move across the board) and the lack of dependence between throws (momentum / being in the zone could have a big effect in reality)

    if we wanted to calculate "Best case scenario" for the worlds best players on a good day (105-110 avg), we could assume a Hit rate of 45% for the first dart and if that's in they got the height and everything, so 2nd dart is probably 66% and 3rd dart 50%. Using that, we would end up on a 0.327% Chance, which is every 300th leg roughly. 8 Perfect darts then happen twice as often (0.654%), 7 perfect darts 1% of the time and 6 perfect darts 2.2% of the time. So me and my pals always argue which is the hardest to do. A hole in one (golf), a 147 break (snooker) or a 9 darter. Statistically I’m unsure if you could compare due, especially for golf as the variability of conditions and hole is so great. But with a few assumptions it would be interesting to see if you could come up with a model to answer the debate.

    • @Schattenlord92
      @Schattenlord92 6 месяцев назад

      At least for snooker it depends so much on your opponent's skill level. If an amateur challenges a top lvl pro and the amateur messes up by doing the split, the maximum break won't be too challenging to the pro.

    • @joaoromero8867

      Hole in one is the easiest of those, I play golf and darts and you dont need to be a professional to do a hole in one, my dad plays golf and did a couple of holes in one, its almost impossible for a bad darts player to do a 9 darter, a hole in one is only one lucky shot...

    • @TheKenny195
      @TheKenny195 6 месяцев назад +1

      i dont know anything about golf but i think 147 is much harder than 9 darter. u have to hit the table perfectly only 9 times, while in snooker you have to complete 36 perfect shots.

    • @TheKenny195
      @TheKenny195 6 месяцев назад

      @@Schattenlord92 147 break is when you clear the snooker table in 1 attempt, so that means you cant miss, so it doesnt depend on your opponent's skill level.

    Maybe this is a stupid question but why not have the outside be the treble ?
    I get it’s slightly smaller but if you miss you still get points, if it were on the edge you are more likely to get 0 for a miss.
    That also makes finishing on a double easier. If you had to finish in the treble zone you would be more likely to bust.

    • @schulerlukas2720

      The double's have more Area than the tripple's. Its not hard to get the hight its left or right.

    • @kye4216
      @kye4216 6 месяцев назад

      @@schulerlukas2720 yea but if you miss the treble you are still scoring points.
      Going for treble 20 and missing all 3 scores you 60 points. If you missed high going for the double you could walk away with 0.
      And then like I said it makes finishing easier since half the time you miss it’s outside the board and you can’t go bust.

    This would be far more mathematically sound if you:
    1. Used only throws from the first 3, maybe 6 darts.
    2. Determined the empirical distribution without assuming a normal for no reason
    3. Compared to actual numbers from pro games

    If every throw would be different and only the last throw would be the one to do it than yes you are correct, but if every throw would be different but the order random than it would be half of the time but with that same time as a discrepancy making your time the guaranteed time but very unlikely the correct one.

    So if it's 1 in 10,000 for a professional to get a 9 darter, then the odds of the leg of MVG vs. Michael Smith occurring which had 17 perfect darts must be like 10s of millions to 1? I say that rather than 100 million to 1 since they are among the best and Michael Smith was in very strong form.
