This is the same type of swap I want to do in a VW Bus. Possibly a 4 door Kombi. This was a great video, and it sounded awesome. I get that you built this out of love for the vehicle, and not to showboat, or brag about it. Whether if you do 10 second quarter mile runs, or use it as a daily driver, your overall project is simply awesome. Thanks for sharing Johan.
Subaru does a 6zylinder boxer engine ^^ go for it here is someone on youtube that offers help and tips for a swap whit the 3.3 Subaru SVX Motor into a T3 his name is "svxcarat" check it out ;-)
the classic hot rod way...light cheap body...good hp engine... awesome quick fast car. never fails. guys in the states were doing this to 32 fords dropping hemi engines and big blocks back in 50s. nice to see something different than the typixal honda mods. big thumbs up !!!
Ahoy matey! That's a damn good VW\EJ vehicle. Top job. I like the part where ,you did NOT pull it out of the shed and try to fry the tyres', as most deem suitable....and it fair shakes along too. BEAUTIFUL !
I must see the suspension before I can appreciate this conversion...and before I would agree to race it. (Prior to agreeing to pilote an owners race ride, I spend a good deal of time inspecting its' 'undercarriage'.)
+Ashley Edmonds the engine needs to be put at least 45mm forward from oem position to close the rear lid. But a little more is better like 6 cm it will give you so more space so allo gearbox needs to move forward
a stock smart will roll at 150KPH turning 4300RPM with a 999cc 3 cylinder engine, add a turbo and it tops out at 240KPH. not many people like driving an 1800 pound car with a 73 inch wheelbase much over 150KPH, it gets a little squirrelly.
+mr bad example The first versions of the smart petrol engine's where not really reliable at more 100dklm For me not really the engine to get high performance output
Beautiful paint job . Nice rims it looks like A actshal race car Runs like a unbeaten Subaru I like to see on track or dyno run Very nice work on your project JM speeds
My point? Subaru is a slug. And such a pain to swap compared to The VW engine that can produce just as much power or more. That's why they're running low 10s and faster. I'm just not impressed. Sorry.I just haven't seen a Subaru swap that was really fast.I call 10.50s really fast in a bug.
i really not get it what you want. do you no what it cost to build a reliable vw engine with the same performance as mine and i mean really runs not only the 1/4 mile but also can do 100k miles with no problem this cost 10 times the price of a low mileage suby engine that is technical 10 times better and a bug with 350hp is never going to hit 10.50s in the real world i think other people have really liked your opion... i think ;)
Johan Muter I admire your work, I have gone the Nissan 1500 route few years back as I did the math and to rebuild my beetle engine would have worked me out R35000.00 (south African rands) where as the Nissan conversion with disk brakes and ss braided lines cost me in the region of R14000.00 I am contemplating on doing the wrx swop if I can source a motor. What gearbox are you running on your bug?
Dude, you really don't know what you're talking about. The original VW engines cannot produce this type of power without changing virtually every single part anyway. Believe me, I've worked on those engines a lot, and it's expensive. Much more expensive than swapping in an engine with much more power out of the box, and the potential to push over 500bhp on regular gas, (not C16 or with help from a bottle) without getting crazy expensive.
TurboABA1955Bug Your high if you think a Bug with 350HP will hit 10.50s in the quarter... That would require at least +450whp... And you know how much a Racing Beetle engine cost? That shit its worth its weight in gold... This Subaru Engine produces an insane amount of power STOCK and cost literally 1/4th of a Racing Beetle Engine and the Subaru Engine will guaranteed out last the Beetle Engine for sure.. Make some Little mods to that Suby engine and you can have +500whp in no time with Regular Gas and still cheaper than a Full bolted on Racing Beetle Engine.. Those beetle engines are for the purist only...
I think next to videos about military subjects, videos on automotive subjects seems to bring out the biggest crack pot comments. Ppl listen to the BS spouted by ill informed ppl and spout it themselves as if it's gospel. If you think an engine designed in the 1920s or 30s is going to have anything like the performance of a modern engine, then you aren't being very realistic, about the only thing the 2 lumps have in common is that they are both flat 4s. That's why the Subaru engine was used very successfully to win un-told rallies, I can't think of 1 successful rally team that utilises VW's venerable old push rod flat 4s, not in this millennium anyway.
+Ronnie Boucher (the crystal craftsman) yes for sure before the remap the turbo spooled so fast it would kick the back of the car out in 2nd gear so 500rpm later spool fixed that. To get it more driveable
i have a 2001 gt forester turbo it is only 174 hp but i love it and you did a great job and thank you sir for answering my post keep up the good work = sure wish you were in australia -
My first love, my first car! The young person, surf culture of '75 determined I would buy a beetle! Bought all the magazines, Hot VW etc and plenty of V8 powered and super tuned dubs made the pages. There was even a 351 beetle called Godzilla, long before Nissan GTR's inherited the name! Had beetles, fast backs, combi's and wagons in the friend group and it would be scary to add up what they would all be worth today! This bug would be a hoot to drive ( as all of them are! ). Not quite a " sleeper " though! Great car!
Thanks very much, there will be more of these project in the future. Don't forget to subscribe to the page. You will be noticed when a new video is placed and a new project is started
How do you keep the front down!? I drove a swapped out bug years and years ago and lost steering over about 90mph. We found putting bricks where the spare type goes helped but it was still pretty hairy! Really looking forward to watching the project vids. Fantastic car, thanks for sharing :)
+ali Servan good suspension with the right settings swaybars and kamei spoiler with splitter in the front. Without the splitter the noise is getting light in the front at 200 kph (125mph) with splitter i did 260kph and i think 280kph is possible but my tires where only good up to 270 kph. I goog a lot of good stuff coming in the future like reviews, project builds, more engine math, enz....
That's one cool as bug. Did you have to fabricate new mounts for the boxer, or you used the ones from the Subaru? And the pressure from that turbo's wastegate is insane.
That is brilliant.... Very nice way to go fast as the best in the world, and you must surprise many racers,....so good job, Sir !! Let me know when it ever comes up for sale, and Thank You !!
do no it for sure because i did not weigh it yet but i will do soon but ithink it is around a 1000kg original a 1303 weigh around 800kg so i hope it is around a 1000kg
Johan, is it possible to share some details about the project? I'm impressed with the harmony during the road test, so Id like to know because I've been working in one similar ,here in Brazil.
Very well built. Like the “Restomod” look, especially the steelies with the white wall letter tires and the bumper painted to match the body, hate chrome! 10 thumbs up!
Its official, this is the coolest beetle swap I have seen done so far, love that boxer sound...
thanks!
There are better ones y’know. Search up on RUclips “1303RS.”
Still, this is a good swap.
As an owner of a '59 Beetle and a WRX, I approve entirely!
This is the same type of swap I want to do in a VW Bus. Possibly a 4 door Kombi. This was a great video, and it sounded awesome. the classic hot rod way...light cheap body...good hp engine... awesome quick fast car. never fails. guys in the states were doing this to 32 fords dropping hemi engines and big blocks back in 50s. nice to see something different than the typixal honda mods. big thumbs up !!!

Jack Richards thanks!
Amélie Renoncule suspension is front and rear coil overs fully adjustable. No torsion bars. And stabilizer bars and cupstrebe. Good enough ;D
I have no idea how I stumbled across this video, but I'm now in love.
Sounds amazing.
This car is bonkers! Almost crapped my pants when the boost kicked in
+Erik Borg
In the front where normally the spare wheel is and it is getting air trough the oem oil cooler opening under the front lid
I need your help for my 69 bug Betsy I'm trying to make her a drifter so what do I need to do to fit that motor
+Ashley Edmonds the engine needs to be put at least 45mm forward from oem position to close the rear lid. But a little more is better like 6 cm it will give you so more space so allo gearbox needs to move forward
JMSpeedshop ! Not only does it perform well but it looks and sounds amazing too!
+In_A_Rush Thanks !!
never seen something as beautiful as that bug
Call Matt Farah and get this on Tuned!
good idea maybe i will do!! ;)

That thing was moving! Well done my friend.

Don't really like beetles but that's a real nice ride you got there.
Thank you for not putting a crap box CVT in it. It is well appreciated.
No problem 😊
I want one.....NICE
It sounds great I hate it when it is so loud you can't hear yourself talk! Well done!!!
I need a minute to myself now..
Amazing. It idles and sounds like any old VW Type 1. Revved it goes like A Beast Poscessed.
Why do you sneeze just before you shift gears ?
its called a blow off valve...
hahahaha! Ahh, well trolled
i sneeze not just before but when i shift!! the turbo needs it pressure be relieved when you get your foot of the throttle.
That's an absolutely sick build
I'm so jelous.
That's a sweet-ass ride! Seriously, awesome setup man!
I expected it to be fast
Your Car had me Smiling. Very Nice Job!
+Maliq Warren Thanks!
+JMSpeedshop ! Will the Tranny you used in the video Bolt up to a Type 1 Motor?

Now that is the kind of car with a Subaru WRX engine I want. Perhaps all wheel drive for all weather conditions is a great idea.
Can't imagine the skill and cost it took, but probably the coolest Beetle ever made.
+Jachin Rivers Thanks. For sure cost some money And a lot if time
Everyone must have been like "how is that beetle doing that?"
Little did they know of the STI engine inside
Very clean build. Great job.
Thanks

hermoso..!! te felicito... hermano podra usted decirme que caja de velocidades tiene puesta con ese motor..?? saludos desde venezuela..!
Love that waste gate. How does it steer with all the weight in the back?
very good no problems with it
That's one cool as bug. Did you have to fabricate new mounts for the boxer, or you used the ones from the Subaru? And the pressure from that turbo's wastegate is insane.

+Norman Reyome Thanks !! It is already sold . Sorry but i can build you one of you want ;)
JMSpeedshop ! How much did it sell for?
+ThatPotato 50k
Love the blow off valves
Even if I had never seen this if I saw one in real life I'd recognize that sti sound so fast it's unmistakable
+Justin Henry for sure. ;)
Definitely cool. How much does a bug weigh?
do no it for sure because i did not weigh it yet but i will do soon but ithink
it is around a 1000kg original a 1303 weigh around 800kg so i hope it is around a 1000kg
The blowoff valve made me sink into my seat........
Damn that sounds sweet👌🏼
Yes sounds really Nice
Johan, is it possible to share some details about the project? I'm impressed with the harmony during the road test, so Id like to know because I've been working in one similar ,here in Brazil.

thanks
What a fantastic creation! 👌
Thanks 👍
What blow off valve are you using? It sounds nice.
Carlos Fraga Just google loud double trumpet dumpvalv. Or blow off valve
Carlos Fraga I got a similar sound from my legacy with a blitz blow off valve and apexi intake.
SuperWesty177
i also got a apexi intake ;)
Its a good poddy, the brakets hold it in so my maf sensor is still alg.
👍👍👍👍AWESOME VERY COOL........👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks
Sounds AMAZING!
Thanks
It looks amazing. nice work
