I’m from Miami I was born January 1970 so I grew up during this time and Gloria Estefan is an icon she’s everything.
Harri, their "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" is next for you!!
She always puts on an encredible show!! She still can do it all these years later, just not as often since she stopped her World Tours
Before Gloria was famous, before she was even out of high school, she went down to Hermosillo, Mexico
during Cinco De Mayo she was dancing to the mariachi band. There were plenty of extremely beautiful
women there, Miss America quality beauty but Gloria stole the show. All the guys ignored the other
beauties to watch her dance! Soon after I returned to Yuma, Az. and was introduced to her and
her family. Her Dad was retired from the service. Years later, I wondered if it was really her but
on one of her videos a trumpet player who was playing in Mexico was in the Sound Machine.
I used to have pictures of them in Mexico but lost them in a fire.
To meet her in person, she was really shy.
Her slower love songs, many which she wrote herself in both Spanish and English are
just as amazing. "Christmas In Your Eyes" is one of my favorites. Her husband composed,
arranged and produced much of the music. She always gives half the credit to him.

I saw her in concert several years later, after Gloria recovered from a life threatening back injury after a serious road accident. The show I saw was amazing.

I am glad you played the live performance. Never seen it. That's Miami everyone can dance to Salsa. No one was going to stay sitting. One giant conga and salsa dance party. Gloria looked beautiful. Loved her hair. Looked like a New Years Eve performance.
I believe this is from 1992 and the Hurricane Andrew telethon she organized....the Hurricane had devastated the South Dade County a lot like Hurricane Ian did to Ft Meyers

The Miami Sound Machine came to my hometown the summer of my junior year. The entire dance bounced and rolled! It was quite the deal for my small resort town.

I had just finished reading Tom Robbins’ Jitterbug Perfume when Sound Machine’s Conga hit it big on MTV. I bought a bunch of their 45s, copies of the book in paperback and lots of little bottles of Anais Anais Eau de Toilette, which you could get at the drugstore for 10 bucks in 1985. Then I made up little baskets for all my girlfriends for Christmas. So much fun

When Gloria Estefan came to my hometown Apeldoorn somewhere in the late 1980s or early 1990s, they stayed at a(n exclusive) hotel at walking distance from our home, so the next day we went there and waited for them to come out of the hotel. We had a nice chat and I was extremely surprised about how tiny Gloria was.

I think I have a memory of being at a live open air concert with them and a Conga line with all the carnival accessories at a New Years parade. That thing was 🔥! I say vague because I have never had enough money to pay to attend one of these concerts and I can't imagine it was free. So maybe I dreamt it?

Great Latin-influenced American band. They had a lot of fun party style songs. Some of their biggest hits are “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”, “Words Get In The Way, “Anything For You, “Don’t Want To Lose You, “Coming Out Of The Dark, "Bad Boy", “1-2-3", “Oye", "Dr. Beat" etc.

Harri, I don’t know if you know this, but a large percentage of the Africans who were taken to Cuba (sadly, as slaves), were Yorubas from Nigeria. It was they who gave Cuban music the rhythms that went around the world. Cuban music made its way back to Africa, where it heavily influenced the music of Congo (Kinshasa), which led to Soukus music.
