    Another great video!
We moved out of town on 2002 motivated by bad neighbors and 9/11.
We are very thankful we did. We are self isolating on 16 forested acres, all fenced, shop space, 2 big gardens and a small orchard, around a mile of walking trails.
The virus is not being taken seriously by people in our State.
    Sorry, off topic.
We love your videos, you are teaching very important things at a very serious time.
    Thanks again

Last year I put in a bunch of raised beds. We built ones sorta like yours. When I had my veggies growing. I would find those tiny green frogs in my kale, chard, lettuces, spinach. They ate all the bugs that would normally eat on all the leaves. I would be careful not to disturb them. When I had to harvest the whole bed I would find the little frogs and move them to another bed of veggies. They were really great pesticides. 🐸🐸🐸 ribbet!

    1. Sunlight - Six hours or more. 8-10 hours is better, especially in cooler climates.
    2. Soil - Good soil is grown. Regularly adding organic matter, compost, and manure keeps good soil growing.
    3. Ecosystem - Grow to attract beneficial bugs and critters to keep damaging pests and disease in check.
    4. Growing Space - Less clear on this one. I think: it takes some space but not as much as you might think; and arrange your spaces to work for you. ?
    5. Effort - It takes steady effort. No slacking. You can do it! 💪

I've learned that I'll work way longer and harder in the garden than I ever will just doing "exercise." Gardening is my favorite form of physical activity. It's interesting, engages my brain (lots of creative problem-solving!), gives me a great work-out, and benefits our household in so many ways. When my friends were complaining about not being able to get to the gym during lockdown, I just grabbed my tools and headed out into my urban garden. As you said in a previous vid, Mark, it wasn't that different for you in lockdown. I experienced that, too. And I also agree that when you're in the garden, the time just flies!

To answer your question about people living in cities thinking about moving out: I live in the suburbs just outside a large city, and I'm so so glad that we couldn't afford to move to the city a few years ago when we bought a house. We were originally really sad that we couldn't afford the multi-million dollar condos in the city, when we left the rental world, but now we're so happy to be in a townhouse with a yard and a large deck because I have quite an extensive container veggie garden going on the south-facing deck and a great shade-garden in the north yard to add to the habitat for animals :) We'll never move back in.

If you work you don't always have the time or the energy to maintain it and that's difficult to tell before you start

And as I reflect now upon the video I've watched (I watch your videos almost daily, along with other gardeners) , tears fill my eyes and I have such a feeling of appreciation for you. The amount of information and knowledge and general wisdom and joy that you are full of, brimming to the top and spilling over on all these videos is a balm to my soul, and I guarantee the rest of your fans as well feel the same way about you. You're a special dude, and I think seeing the frogs and birds who you are also taking care of almost make me weep, it's so incredibly lovely
And that reflects back to my garden (this is my second year doing it by myself, though my girlfriend is incredible at the labor, she is also a novice like myself and she has let me do the planning 😁) and how much security I have because of it, and our new chickens that we got two weeks ago. And further calms my anxiety and sooths my stomach.
I actually feel like I can eat the dinner that my lady and I prepared together now, thanks to you and everything you bring to these videos.
I'm absolutely going to binge watch more episodes, if you ever appear in my dreams, Mark, I'm going to give you the biggest hug. Thanks again for your content, but also this experience I'm having, with tears streaming down my face as I write you.

I have been gardening for about 5 years now, and I just had to pause this video and say: Your videos are packed with excellent gardening information, seriously!! (but also entertaining which is a nice bonus, haha!)
I'm not even halfway through this video and it has made me realize why I had so many issues in my first 2 or 3 years of gardening, so it's helping me to apply the information I've been learning over the years. It's making me realize more about my soil and conditions just by the way you've explained things! The problems I had were caused by many factors, but one factor I had not fully understood until now was the fact that my plants weren't getting enough nutrients because I wasn't fertilizing much, plus I had not yet done anything to encourage a thriving community of beneficial soil microbes.
Early on I had read that one of the most common gardening mistakes was over-fertilizing, so of course I made the opposite mistake for years, hardly fertilizing at all, even for plants that are heavy feeders! Now I'm trying to build healthy organic soil, but that is going to take years so I need to be better about properly fertilizing (with organic fertilizer only so I don't discourage the worms and microbes), especially for things that need a rich soil like squash, radish, onion, etc.
Anyway, if anyone else is reading this, this guy knows what he is talking about!!

I never thought that both dairy farms and the land owned by my now deceased grandparents would be sold. We always thought we'd have the farm in the family. But life events happened.
I live in a suburb but instead of moving, I lease land and use that for my beekeeping. A big benefit to this is the land is conservation land so it's pesticide-free. My father does the same and has a very large family garden on a cousins' farm. The cousin benefits from free veggies from the garden in exchange.
    These are our workaround solutions.

@Dog The one farm is used just for cash crops and the other was converted to pig farming but you are right. 25 head of cattle and 100 acres is old school. Now they run with 400 to 600 acres and usually own several farms on the concession.
I know dairy has been given a bad name but I believe there will be a comeback when people realize they've been duped.

Over the last 13years, our garden has been my consellor, my physical therapist and (although I'm not religious) my spiritual guide. Your videos have been my educator, allowing me the knowledge to keep making small victories. Growing, tending and eating one's own fruit and vegetables is just the best therapy for PTSD. Thank you for your efforts, I genuinely can't watch any civvies' channels!

We got a chuckle out of your comments about the family helping! I'm the gardener in the family but have had health problems that have limited what I've been able to do in recent years. Every spring I get the itch and start planning the garden while the family starts groaning and make themselves scarce.
I've ordered 3 Birdies raised beds because of your show. Anxiously awaiting them but probably won't be here until June.
We've really enjoyed watching your you tube channel especially in this time of Covid 19.

I live in a subdivision with just a small yard. My partner and I have been at odds for years about where we live. I want a place with lots of land and he loves it here. We finally agreed that we will invest in this little bit of property that we have now and make it as productive as possible. We are in Canada and started our yard transformation last fall and will do as much as we can this summer given our movement restrictions. We have decided to buy a second property in sunny Florida and have agreed to buy a property with lots of land! Once we have freedom of movement again, that will be a priority.

I am in Melbourne, Australia. I heard a rural real estate agent say today (on the radio) that starting a few weeks ago, there had been a surge in interest in regional properties. People are thinking that if they are working from home via the internet as seems to be the new normal here, why not live in the countryside rather than a big city? Mark has cited another benefit of the rural life at this time - having lots of space to roam around in if sentenced to a life at home.

We built and are still building a cinder block raised bed garden. It is a 42.5 foot by 25.5 foot square. Planting area between inner and outer wall is 3 foot 10 inches. We are going to enclose it in a framework and fence it in chicken wire.
We are also going to put 4 to 6 beds inside of the square.
